My tendency seems to be owning my own business and freelancing until I die (until I get stable enough to build my own products). I've been trying to connect with more business-minded people--"average of 5 people" type of mentality. Currently it seems that the only way of doing this is LinkedIn.

But obviously, LinkedIn is creepy.

Any other people think this? How having a federated business networking platform would be awesome?

It’s a great idea! Would the ActivityPub protocol contain enough user information as-is? I think it does.

I’m using my Lemmy instance as a personal blog/extension of my LinkedIn. I control the instance and have it kind of locked down policy-wise.

Over time as I master the administration I will post maker projects and other personal projects. So the only thing that keeps you from doing it is how you use lemmy. LinkedIn is unique among “social” medias in that your verified real name and identity is associated with your profile. Nothing stops you from associating your real self with your lemmy account and completely controlling a single instance.

I’m pursuing a hybrid approach. I cross link my LinkedIn with my personal sites so people who find one can easily find the other. I’m at a stage in my career where recruiters actually are welcome because they bring genuine opportunities for my somewhat specialized background.

It’s all an experiment and it will take time to see if it’s worthwhile. In the meantime, I enjoy watching Lemmy grow and learning how to manage my own online persona.

@PlanetOfOrd I think of it frequently

It looks like Polywork might be what you are looking for. The early adopters are, as you can imagine, very tech orientated but that is changing as the numbers grow.

With how much information about your location/job/career/relationship with other professionals on LinkedIn, I would rather to have 1 company I can trust to handle data/security/privacy concerns

On LinkedIn at least your profile is not public for EVERYONE to see

"company I can trust"

About that ...

I do hope fediverse will mature and reputable instances established. For now, I don’t think LinkedIn have any competitors, let alone better security/privacy. I do trust Microsoft in that regards than say Google/Facebook/Amazon, or any instance owners right now

it is feasible, if/when someone can/would built it out based on activitypub, just like how people built mastodon (twitter alike) and lemmy (reddit alike)

Na, I'm good. I never touch it, except to update my CV before I send it to recruiters. Don't care for employee influencers.

Yes, LinkedIn is creepy, but I am not sure if federation would make it better or worse, and getting people to switch over would probably be challenging.

yes please, i was just thinking how lemmy's UI could be re-worked to do insta and pinterest formats as well.

insta and pinterest formats

Have you heard of Pixelfed? It tackles the insta format more or less.

Why do you feel LinkedIn is creepy? Just curious. Out of all the social media presence I currently have LinkedIn seems to me like the only one that is actually benefiting me. I post very little on there unless I am promoting a professional achievement.

[-] PlanetOfOrd@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

They state very plainly that they sell your data to advertisers.

I post there weekly (often blog articles I publish to provide value for people), I have thousands of connections (a lot of CEOs) over the past 7 years I've been on there and I have yet to make a connection that ends in even meager work. The paranoid of me thinks that it's keeping me in a bubble because it's cheaper to keep me in need.

Set your profile to open to work if you haven't. That makes all the difference in the world.

[-] PlanetOfOrd@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Thanks. I have it set to open for work, and I've had literally the words "open to work" in all my social media profiles (including linkedin) in case someone missed it 😆. I'm getting tired of seeing green. 🤢

Damn. Mileage may vary I guess. My messages are flooded with people wanting to speak about job opportunities.
