I think this is different. Gorby was an anti-communist who rose to power through opportunism. He was very competent, it's just that he was a POS who wanted to tear things down for his own benefit and for his neoliberal friends.
Nicholas on the other hand was an incompetent buffoon. It would be more like idolizing a communist who really sucks at communism.

Don't know how true it is but I've read that even by the standards of brutal monarchies of his time, Nicholas II was the worst.
There's a reason there's a legitimate discussion over whether or not murdering his children was the right move.
Not generally a sign of a good leader that there's a pretty compelling argument for wiping out the entire bloodline.
