Question: what was wrong with bsg 2005 to need a “reboot”? Hope its a new show not actually a reboot because those are some big shoes to fill

[–] zcd@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (3 children)

Very close to perfection, the only complaint I have personally is the ending was kind of.. eh? But not sure how they could possibly match some of those performances particularly Adama, and not sure it could be improved upon

[–] ericisshort@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

To me, the show went downhill as the mysticism became the focus, so the reboot handling that aspect differently would be an improvement in my mind.

[–] psmgx@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Same. First 2 seasons were insanely gripping but then it lots it's focus and turned into "actually, angels lol".

[–] Drusas@kbin.social 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The writers' strike killed it, but it had a fantastic first season and a half or so.

[–] zcd@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Oh shit is that what happened? Because yeah it was off the hook and then really sort of.. lost its way at the very end.

Mild spoilers ahead

I do like the idea of “It happened before and it’s going to happen again” Where organics will inevitably create machines and mistreat them, who will then try to exterminate the humans, who then would need to evolve/change their ways to convince the machines to allow them to exist.. meanwhile some of the machines are essentially becoming organics and yeah just felt jarring the direction they went with for the ending

[–] Drusas@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That is indeed what happened. I had been a huge fan of the show, even purchasing the DVD sets despite limited entertainment budget. I was so disappointed.

[–] maegul@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Just looked it cuz I was curious where the break was and whether it matched my impression when watching it.

From the Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_(2004_TV_series) it seems that the strike interrupted the production of season 4 but not 3.

Which matches my experience. I was with the show up to the end of S3 but then S4 felt meh-ish except for

spoilerthe Gaeta coup episodes

[–] Drusas@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. It's been an awfully long time so my memory is distant.

I really liked the miniseries, but the actual show was awful. It was very obvious the writers didn't have a plan and just made up new shit every episode. It had its moments, but it was very far from being perfect.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

2006 Galactica is incredible except for the last 30 minutes. Having everything wrap up with supernatural incidents that were never hinted at felt like it undercut the visceral 4 season journey before it.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 years ago

This article practically pretends that whole show didn't exist, and only refers to the miniseries.

[–] Pratai@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 years ago

They lack the creativity to come up with new IP so they rehash old shit knowing people are dumb enough to watch it.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It was great, but that's really why they are rebooting. Any successful show is more likely to get an instant audience if they reboot rather than try something new.

Then if it's good, the audience will stay. If it's not, they won't. Getting people to try something new is hard to build.

The problem is people often reward bad shows with views just because they liked the original. I've certainly given up watching any reboot until the first season is over and reviews are in and it's been reviewed. If they don't respect my time, I'm not playing their game.

[–] SteefLem@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Well at least its not another reality show where some prick buys leaves for a living to sell at turtles or something.

But they could expand i mean they are expanding star trek like there is no tomorrow’. Not all good but better than rebooting star trek tos. And it worked. But yeah…. Money…

[–] Zoidberg@lemm.ee 18 points 2 years ago (5 children)

I was looking at my Goodreads account and I've read around 300+ sci-fi books. There are TONS of stories that could be awesomely adapted to TV. Why do they insist on rehashing the same old shit?

[–] maegul@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Cuz Hollywood is dying or going through a dark age. No faith in trying new things. Complete profit driven cynicism from the top. An interest in only making substantial profits when entertainment is probably best run as a low-profit industry so that risks can be taken in order to enrich and progress culture.

How does anyone else feel about the quality of writing they’ve been seeing lately? I feel like I can detect a drop in quality over the past couple of years. At first I thought it was all the work done over the pandemic but I feel like it’s persisting.

[–] nick@midwest.social 6 points 2 years ago

Or finish the expanse, fuck.

[–] Nomad@infosec.pub 4 points 2 years ago

People that liked this show as teens now earn money fulltime. So the answer is: consumers with cash reliving their childhood.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Low risk, making tv is expensive

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well last time they rehashed Battlestar Galactica it actually went well, so can't knock all rehashing imo

[–] Zoidberg@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Went well? Seriously? First year was good and I liked it. From that point on it was downhill. An entire year lost on semi religious cult BS. Then another year lost in a muddy planet. Then all the "All along the watchtower" mess. With the most stupid ending conceivable. "Let's throw the ships into the sun". Why??? Oh and we made such a mess with the story that Starbucks just disappeared out of thin air...

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago

8.7 on IMDb. I'd say that's pretty good.

Michael Hogan has the greatest potty mouth in the industry.

[–] Drusas@kbin.social 14 points 2 years ago

Jesus fuck, can we just not?

[–] altasshet@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 years ago

What year is it?!

[–] Teon@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago

Yay! More tv shows getting ruined because the entertainment industry has Zero creativity!

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 years ago

And Firefly has no reboot.

[–] maquise@ttrpg.network 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Would really prefer they did something new/different with the IP than rehash the same old stuff.

[–] Drusas@kbin.social 2 points 2 years ago

Or if they didn't use the IP to keep rehashing the same stories and make something unique.

[–] dangblingus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 years ago

I feel if it only really achieved cult fame during the new golden age of television, a reboot of a cult show made during the most popular era of television is going to not be as popular and be objectively worse. I would generally be up to be proven wrong, but I wish they'd leave BSG alone unless it was some kind of continuation or spinoff instead of a reboot.

[–] delmain@beehaw.org 4 points 2 years ago

We've had one, yes, but what about second reboot?

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I'll take things that were perfect in their original incarnation and don't need a reboot for 200$ Alec

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 1 points 2 years ago

Stop rebooting BSG and get back onto B5 already you floons.

[–] toxicbubble420@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago
