  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. 6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image depicts Kim Jong-un accompanied by China's Wang Huning, crossing the New Yalu River Bridge on a day's visit to China.

My weekly preamble is in spoiler tags below.

preambleThe situation in the Middle East remains very tense, with the two major points of speculation being 1) whether the war will resume at all, or if the US is bluffing to try and get Iran to concede on their demands, and 2) assuming the war will resume, whether the US will conduct strikes on Iran before or after the elections within the Zionist entity; the point being to try and further delay the elections by citing the war they started as an emergency and therefore keep Netanyahu in power. Quite frankly, if Netanyahu wants to risk destroying the whole Zionist project just to save his own skin, then I have no objections - aside from the part where he might do immense damage to the world economy in the process by prompting Iran's promise of regional retaliation, of course. Meanwhile, the Saudis keep getting pummelled, with Ansarallah landing missile after missile on pipeline pumping stations, airbases, military officials, and troop accumulations. Even the Western media is becoming dour about MBS's prospects. Attempts to isolate Iran economically are becoming rather spotty. Pakistan briefly halted their border exchange with Iran, but once Iran splashed cold water on their face by restricting their fossil fuel exports into Pakistan - which is already in a politically unstable situation - they wised up quickly and reopened them.

Next up, we have the surprising victory of Lula in the second round of the Brazilian elections. A loss in the first round into a victory in the second round hasn't happened in Brazilian history since 1989, and the president winning a fourth term via a democratic vote is unprecedented - and I fully confess that I went into this thinking Bolsonaro was gonna scrape by with a ~0.5% lead, so I will publicly and gladly admit to being wrong. The regular suite of electoral irregularities and not-quite-illegal tactics took place to try and prevent Lula from gaining the requisite votes, including a swathe of widespread interruptions to public transportation in cities that typically vote for Lula, as well as Meta putting a thumb on the scale by apparently reducing the visibility of Lula's online campaign. However, countering that was an upsurge of people who were otherwise unengaged who presumably went "oh shit" when they saw the first round results, as well as an emergency two hour extension to voting in order to counter the aforementioned public transportation interruptions. The next year or two will determine if Lula's victory is a curious aberration or instead a breakwater to the rising tide of conservatism in Latin America, fueled somewhat by explicit American intervention but mostly by the populace themselves finding little hope in lukewarm social democrats and instead finding community in, among other places, right-wing evangelical religious groups. I recommend RedSails 2023 piece, Reformists, Revolutionaries, and Social Liberals, which delves into the broad contours of the Latin American and particularly Brazilian political landscape, and how even reformism has been essentially abandoned in many countries in the region (and, therefore, why ground has been ceded to the right-wing lately).

It remains difficult to keep track of global events as the crisis worsens. The Hormuz oil glut prophesized by the US military and its quislings is still yet to show signs of being founded in reality, with Brent oil prices now reaching highs resembling those in the period of outright war in April, and emergency fuel supplies in the US being increasingly dipped into. While the biggest cause of this price increase is obviously the literal scarcity of oil, some of this trend is due to comically high tanker rates (which are that high due to a number of factors but which all still ultimately stem from Iranian strikes on tankers trying to slip through the strait), and some of it is due to China amping up their oil imports just in time for the US midterms, which puts further stress on world supplies. All of this pressure continues to feed protests and riots, of which those in Europe have received the most attention. The pressure on populations is coming at the exact same time that broader financial conditions reach points that usually prompt austerity measures, creating a pressure cooker of contradictions which governments will have to attempt to survive. Some have already failed to do so, such as Serbia's - however, as I said last week, the root cause of the dissatisfaction is typically another factor that the economic problems are merely fueling (i.e. in Serbia's case, a student movement).

As a more positive final note, Kim Jong-un visited the Chinese border city of Dandong to commemorate the 76th anniversary of Chinese troops marching to help northern Korea during the Korean War, with both countries reportedly seeking to deepen their industrial and trade cooperation. The New Yalu River Bridge between the two has finally formally opened after a 12 year delay, shortly after a bridge between the DPRK and Russia was completed last month.

Very interesting molotov being used on police by the French here:

It's quite good right? Heavy, drops straight to the feet of the cops when hitting shields, they don't realise it's a molotov because it doesn't immediately go off and when it does it's scary and firey enough to completely break up their lines. I immediately clocked it as a pretty nice improvement over other molotovs I've seen that haven't been effective at breaking lines because they break on the shield instead of at the feet of the cops.

If I were the french cops and this became common I would change their equipment. They need a shield from neck to floor for this. The gap between knee and floor is what makes this effective.

It's got a fuse, so maybe using some kind of firecracker ignition. The force of the pop is pretty high, so there might be something special going on for that. The bottle might be some kind of plastic, doesn't seem to shatter at all.

[–] BobDole@hexbear.net 21 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The fuse could be a storm match, which was the original ignition source for the Molotov cocktail

Looks like severe icing and updrafts and downdrafts from a storm caused this. You want to avoid flying through a cumulonimbus/Cb/Charlie Bravo cloud at all costs because it leads to this, the core of a thunderstorm is the last place to be. Fly over, under, or around (behind the cloud with respect to the wind direction causing it to drift) the cloud, never through. You'll die. This aircraft descended to FL350 and made a turn before entering the storm, not high enough to fly over the core which went up to FL450, it went through.

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 27 points 5 days ago (1 children)

So what happens here, low velocity/turbulent surface locations fill up with ice and the controls start to fail?

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 34 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Usually at higher altitudes (going by the ICAO standard atmosphere, above 28 000ft, that's where the outside air temperature would go below -40°C with the 2°C per 1000ft adiabatic lapse rate and 15°C air temperature at mean sea level), it's actually too cold for icing on the aircraft to happen, it's all crystallised and the ice won't "stick" to the surface of the aircraft. However in a convective thunderstorm, warm moist air from below is sucked up quickly by the updrafts, and may not have time to adiabatically cool as it rises (the wet adiabatic lapse rate for more moist air is around 1.5°C per 1000ft, a lot slower), or supercooled liquid droplets may form, where the water is below freezing but in liquid form. Then when it hits the surface of the aircraft, the supercooled water instantly freezes, causing icing. This can overwhelm the aircraft's anti icing or de icing system, and control surfaces can freeze shut or airflow over the wing can stall from the disturbance of the surface caused by the ice.

There was a SIGMET issued for convective activity up to FL450 in the area. The closer to the equator, the higher Cb clouds can form before they "anvil" out at the top, as the atmosphere gets taller the closer you get to the equator, pushing over 60 000ft at times for the vertical displacement of a CB cloud.

Flight tracking data showed the plane experienced a rapid nosedive—dropping around 27,000 feet in about a minute—before the signal cut off.

UPDATE:

Flight data would eventually show them descending 32,000 feet per minute -- roughly 360 MPH.

Mossad agents infiltrated Brazil just 6 days before the second round of the presidential election, with Israeli intelligence service operators planning and executing the exfiltration operation of Flávio Bolsonaro to Argentina and subsequently to the USA, according to CNN Brazil. The infiltration of Mossad agents into Brazil, six days before the second round of elections, to orchestrate the exfiltration of Flávio Bolsonaro to Argentina and, subsequently, to the USA, as reported by CNN Brazil, constitutes a hostile operation involving multiple nations. This event directly implicates Brazilian sovereignty by facilitating the escape of an individual with ongoing legal proceedings, constituting a serious interference in Brazil's internal affairs and international relations, with potential diplomatic and legal repercussions for the countries involved.

China’s New Trimaran Submarine: 16 Missiles And An Unconventional Design

articleChina is building more submarines, of more classes, than any other country. It has several brand-new ambitious design readying for series production and is forging ahead in the uncrewed space. But this unique trimaran design appears the strangest of them all.

Somewhere in the Eastern Pacific, a snorkel mast skims the ocean’s surface, the only visible sign of a vessel lurking below. An encrypted signal arrives, carrying target data. The vessel rises, revealing a distinctive trimaran hull unlike that of any other navy’s submarine. This unique configuration provides greater stability on the surface. Moments later, two large hangars built into the central hull slide open, and 16 missile tubes rise into firing position. Nearly 1,500 km (930 miles) away, an enemy carrier battle group lies within range. This is no ordinary submarine; it is a vessel unlike any other in the world.

The above scene illustrates how new submersible warship is expected to operate. Previously described as a Semi-Submersible Arsenal Ship, it has yet to receive an official designation or Western reporting name. The vessel is currently being tested in Huludao on the Bohai Sea. Originally built in the southern city of Guangzhou, it was ferried to the north of China via the port of Dalian earlier this year.

[Satellite image of the submersible trimaran at Dalian in Northern China, 12th May 2026]

It is, for sure, a completely new category of warship. Fresh analysis suggests that it is best thought of as a submersible warship, which is uncrewed, and yet needs to come to the surface to launch its weapons.

16+ Missile Tubes

The new submersible warship built by China likely has 16 strike-length missile tubes occupying much of its central hull. Currently we can be confident that there are at least 8 tubes, but more probably 16-18 in total assuming both hangars are identical. The tubes are arranged in two circular clusters which are stored horizontally in hangars. To launch the missiles the vessel will logically have to surface, the hangar doors opened and the missile tubes elevated into a vertical position.

As is the case with secretive naval projects, vessel has not been reported or named in Chinese media. We do not have a clear official narrative on its role or status. The following observations come from what can be gleaned by open-source intelligence (OSINT), principally commercial satellite imagery.

It is likely that the missile tubes carry anti-ship or land-attack missiles. We can infer that the exact type of missile chosen, and China has many suitable types, is one which is intended for surface rather than submerged launch. This leads to the hypersonic YJ-20 missiles normally associated with the Type-055 cruiser, being a contender.

Unique Hull Form, and likely Uncrewed

The vessel is clearly submersible but, as indicated by its prominent snorkel, is intended to run on diesels even when submerged. Its trimaran hull form, with outrigger hulls towards the stern, appears optimised for surface transit and stability on the surface. This latter factor may be a driver since the missile tubes, when erected, must make the vessel somewhat top heavy.

The outriggers also sport ducted propellers (‘screws’), possibly of a pumpjet type. Logically the vessel will have a set of screws or water jets on the main body for the diesels, and electric screws on the outriggers.

Dr. Rachel Pawling, Principal Consultant at K39 Consulting and lecturer in ship design, has calculated the vessel’s likely internal make-up. She estimates that the ship displaces around 900 tonnes fully submerged.

Dr. Pawling notes that the weapons hangars take up so much volume, that the rest of the internal space must be extremely cramped. So much so, that it appears unlikely that there is space for a crew. Yet the vessel has an open navigation bridge on top of its fin (sail). The obvious explanation is that this is only for a human pilot during entering and exiting ports. Most large uncrewed vessels have some form of bridge like this to simplify port operations.

Concept of Operations

There has always been a blurred line between submersible warships and true submarines. There have been numerous designs designed to fight on the surface which can partly or fully submerge. Indeed until World War Two submarines were mostly surface vessels which could submerge.

Dr. Pawling suggests that the new type is similar to Cold War Soviet cruise missile submarines like the Juliett Class. That was a diesel submarine which had to surface to launch its powerful anti-ship missiles. It could pop-up to attack high-value warships from unexpected directions.

The main differences will be that modern missiles, such as the YJ-20 hypersonic missile, will have much longer ranges and be able to target both land and sea targets. This means that they will be dependent on external targeting. This makes this vessel a transporter and launcher, a small part in a larger distributed network. What is more, the Chinese vessel will carry far more weapons than the 4 SS-N-3 Shaddock carried by the Juliett Class.

This vessel will remain subject to analysis and speculation. China appears in no hurry to explain it to the outside world, and there is much which remains unclear. The ports it has been observed in do not match those associated with either China’s large uncrewed surface vessel (USV) or uncrewed submarine (XLUUV) programs, suggesting that it is distinct from either program.

Alliance of different generations re-elected Lula da Silva - Cenarium

Teenagers and young adults, most of whom grew up during Lula’s administrations in the 2000s, joined forces with their grandparents, most of whom fought against the military dictatorship and lived through the 1964 coup, to vote for Lula da Silva. Several people with physical disabilities and terminally ill patients voted for President Lula after Flávio mocked Lula during the debate for being old and physically disabled.

Article

There are times when history seems to move backward. And there are others when it finds, in the courage of those who still have a whole life ahead of them and in the wisdom of those who have already traveled almost the entire road, the necessary strength to continue moving forward. This is how Brazil arrived at the polls in the second round of the 2026 presidential elections, in this scenario where youth and the elderly came together to write, together, another chapter of Brazilian democracy.

Between the first and second rounds, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva gained 10.3 million new votes. His opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro, added 3.7 million. The difference between these gains, of 6.6 million votes, helps to illustrate an electoral shift that, in this narrative, did not arise solely from campaign strategies, television programs, or social media algorithms. It also stemmed from something deeper: a silent pact between the future and memory.

First came the universities. Then, the streets. Finally, social media, transformed into public squares for a generation that decided to make indignation a form of political participation. The youth were reacting to the possibility of changes to the 1988 Constitution, the same one that, after two decades of military dictatorship, restored to the country the right to dream democratically.

It wasn't just a contest between candidates. For those students, the opportunities to study, work, research, exist, and build their own destiny were at stake. They defended ProUni (a Brazilian government program focused on scholarships and social programs), the "Pé-de-Meia" (a Brazilian social welfare program), public universities, science, respect for diversity, and the right to live in a society where freedom doesn't need to be reclaimed every generation.

But the youth realized that, to defend tomorrow, they needed to talk to those who knew yesterday. And they went to their grandparents. In the simple houses of the outskirts, in the apartments of the big cities, in the communities of the interior and on the banks of the Amazonian rivers, children and grandchildren began to make an invitation that seemed small, but carried an immense historical dimension: “Grandma, shall we vote? Grandpa, I’ll take you.” And they went.

There were the elderly with their canes, their wheelchairs, their slow steps, and their hands marked by time. There were those who needed an arm to cross the street, help to climb a sidewalk, someone to read the numbers on the ballot box screen to them. Some arrived on stretchers, others accompanied by respiratory equipment. There were those who needed to be carried in someone's arms. And there were those who, even walking with difficulty, insisted on walking the last few meters to the polling station on their own two feet. Each journey seemed to contain a small family epic.

The grandson held his grandmother's hand. The grandmother carried memories that the grandson knew only from books. One offered the strength of their arms; the other, the strength of their memory. And, in that encounter, the past and the future seemed to recognize that they had something precious to protect.

For many of those Brazilians over 70, the word authoritarianism wasn't an abstraction from history books. It was a memory. They had known a country where censorship silenced newspapers, repression persecuted opponents, and fear permeated family conversations. Some lived through the dictatorship in their youth; others grew up in its shadow. They also carried very concrete concerns. The readjustment of pensions, the preservation of the minimum wage appreciation policy, and the continuation of the Continuous Benefit Payment (BPC) were not simply expressions of an economic debate. They were issues that affected the lunch table, the purchase of medicines, and the possibility of aging with dignity. For those who depend on a minimum wage to survive, a decision made in Brasília can determine what will be in the refrigerator at the end of the month.

The youth, in turn, also had their own urgent needs. They wanted a university with open doors, a scholarship that would allow them to continue studying, a respected science, a country where differences were not a reason for persecution. They wanted to work without giving up their rights, to love without fear, and to grow old without losing hope. And so, for different reasons, but intertwined with common concerns, two generations came together. The younger ones looked to the horizon. The older ones looked in the rearview mirror. Some wanted to reach the future; others did not wish to relive painful experiences of the past. Between these two perspectives, they found democracy.

The memory of the pandemic also loomed large in that election. Brazil had surpassed the mark of 700,000 deaths from Covid-19. For many families, the absence of a chair at the table remained the most painful memory of that period. Criticism of the Jair Bolsonaro government's handling of the health crisis and events related to the attempted institutional rupture continued to be present in political discussions and in the memories of a society marked by loss. Perhaps that's why the most powerful image of that imagined election wasn't on the campaign platforms, nor in the candidates' speeches, nor even in the crowds that filled the avenues. It was in a seemingly banal scene: a young woman pushing her grandmother's wheelchair to the entrance of a school transformed into a polling place.

The young woman was in a hurry to live. The older woman, not at all. But both knew why they were there. That Sunday, Brazil seemed to discover that democracy doesn't belong exclusively to those who are arriving, nor to those who helped build it. It belongs to both. And its continued existence depends on both. In electoral mathematics, votes are counted one by one. In the mathematics of life, however, there are gestures that don't fit into spreadsheets. An offered arm, a pushed chair, a conversation between generations, an invitation made at the coffee table. Small expressions of affection that, added together, can produce great political events.

In that second-round scenario, Lula's victory therefore took on a meaning that went beyond the election results. For the characters in this chronicle, it represented the meeting of two generations united in the defense of rights, social protection, and democratic continuity. The young people wanted the opportunity to build a country that did not yet exist. The elderly wanted to preserve the achievements of a country they had helped to transform. And perhaps therein lies the most beautiful image of that journey: while the grandchildren led their grandparents to the urns, the grandparents, with the accumulated experience of so many decades, helped their grandchildren understand the value of the path they still needed to travel. Some offered their arms. Others, their memories.

Some carried dreams. Others, scars. And together, they crossed the school threshold to exercise the simplest and most extraordinary of democratic rights: to choose. Because sometimes, the future needs to hold hands with the past so that both can continue moving forward. And democracy, when it finds this embrace between generations, discovers a way to remain young.

Brazil's “Cultural Janonism” inspires the left in other countries, while the president considers how to preserve the legacy of the “Lula Army” - Globo

Left-wing leaders from countries such as Spain, France, and Argentina have created their own WhatsApp channels, inspired by André Janones

Article

The digital strategy that Federal Deputy André Janones (Green Party) created for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (Workers' Party) reelection campaign has inspired various left-wing parties and movements around the world over the past week. Channels similar to “Exército do Lula” have proliferated in countries such as Spain, France, and Argentina. In Brazil, the legacy of the mobilization—which has more than 10 million members on WhatsApp—remains uncertain, as does the possibility that Janones will take on a ministerial role.

In addition to the emergence of these channels, the “General” of the Lula campaign against Flávio Bolsonaro (Liberal Party) was invited by two influential leaders—Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez—to visit their countries and collaborate with them. The election in Spain will be held on the 29th of this month, and the next election in Mexico is scheduled for June of next year.

In Argentina, the “Ejército del Peronismo” was created, which had 65,000 followers as of Friday. In its first few days of operation, the group has already spearheaded several online protests against the government of Javier Milei, an ally of Flávio.

La France Insoumise, a left-wing party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon in France, has followed suit and already has more than 100,000 supporters. On the Spanish left, there is more than one group adopting this model.

Eduardo Rubiño, coordinator of the Frente Ampla—which brings together various left-wing movements in Spain—says that Lula’s turnaround drew attention because of his bold use of WhatsApp and the way he “challenged the manipulated algorithms.” One of the ideas Janones conveyed to the “Army,” in fact, was that the president’s supporters needed to understand how to feed—or not feed—the social media algorithms. He advised, for example, against engaging with opponents’ posts, even if it was to offer criticism.

“I believe the most innovative aspect was turning citizens into agents who drive the campaign.” Using WhatsApp not only to convey information, but to mobilize people and propose concrete ways to bring about change,” says Rubiño. “Using humor, internet slang, missions, and calls to action. Coordinating all of this using WhatsApp is something no one had done in a similar way before, and we learned a great deal from it.”

The Broad Front is part of Pedro Sánchez’s administration; Sánchez belongs to the traditional left-wing PSOE party, but the party’s lead candidate in this year’s election is former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, another figure who has publicly praised Lula by name in recent days. Since the country operates under a parliamentary system, the fact that the left has more than one candidate does not mean that the government will not be composed of both blocs if they manage, together, to form a majority in Parliament.

Sánchez was one of the world leaders who invited Janones to collaborate, and his political group created the channel “La fuerza de la gente” (“The Power of the People”), which had about 50,000 followers as of Friday.

Like Rubiño, Brazilian strategist Nani Blanco, a founding partner of the Nuvem agency, believes that placing the voter at the center was the “Army’s” masterstroke.

— Not only did it spark a mobilization, but it also organized the digital landscape by turning voters into campaign assets who helped spread the information. “An election is a 100-meter dash, so this agility works very well,” she says. “The model is applicable elsewhere, but it’s important to understand the level of WhatsApp usage—which is very widespread in Brazil—in each country.”

Moving forward, Blanco says, Lula needs to capitalize on this mobilization, which doesn’t mean turning the government into a “permanent campaign.”

— It’s no use if Lula 4 doesn’t deliver the change that people want. Despite the reelection, it was a campaign that called for change. The greatest possible legacy of this experience isn’t a government that runs a permanent campaign, but one that communicates with the public in a way that’s more in tune with society,” he points out. “Incumbents have struggled to communicate their achievements.

Lula and Janones met in Brasília on Thursday. The name of the campaign’s “general” began to be floated as a potential minister in the new administration, but upon leaving the meeting with the president, the congressman remained evasive.

—“We’ll figure out where I can contribute most to Lula 4. Personally, I don’t think a ministerial position is where I can help the most, but I’m part of his leadership team,” he said.

After the victory, the Army began to be used for specific causes, in addition to publicizing news about the channel’s own success. One of the missions assigned in recent days involved sharing a post by Lula on Instagram in which the president said that “the money from the bets is returning to the tables of Brazilian families.”

The information was based on a survey by the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Abras), which identified a 6.5% increase in the sector during October of this year compared to the same dates in 2025.

“Look at this—the money that used to go toward funding gambling addiction and enriching influencers is now going back to the people,” Janones wrote to the channel’s more than 10 million subscribers. “EXPLODE IT!!!”

Later, in an audio message similar to those he sent during the campaign—criticizing those who helped the opposing side gain traction—he stated that it feels like he’s “dealing with children”:

— You’ve been giving a platform to the far right all this time, giving a platform to the opposition. That guy (Flávio) is finished; let’s focus on this—on doing good, on highlighting President Lula’s actions. I can’t possibly stay here every day saying the same thing.”

Lebanon says its territory will not be used against Arab countries - Prensa Latina

Article

Beirut, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raji stated today that his country will not allow its territory to be used as a platform to threaten the security of Arab states and demanded Israel's complete withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories.

During his participation in the XXII Manama Dialogue, organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Minister of Foreign Affairs rejected, in a session entitled "The Eastern Mediterranean: crossroads of continents and bridge to the Gulf", any violation of the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of his country.

The minister pointed out that Lebanon has suffered for years from the consequences of armed groups becoming instruments of foreign influence, while the population has paid a high price for conflicts it did not choose.

He also warned of the risks to navigation in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, as well as in the Red Sea, and stated that the security of the Gulf is closely linked to that of the Red Sea and the eastern Mediterranean.

Domestically, Raji stated that Lebanon, under the presidency of Joseph Aoun and the government of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, is working to restore the authority of the State.

In this regard, he highlighted the government's decisions aimed at restricting weapons to state control and prohibiting Hezbollah's military and security activities. He asserted that these measures stem from a sovereign national conviction and not from external impositions.

"Lebanon will no longer accept its territory being used as a platform to threaten the security of its Arab brothers, nor as a bargaining chip in agreements negotiated outside its borders," he declared.

He added that the country's foreign policy is decided in Beirut and that only the State determines national security.

The foreign minister stressed that the restoration of sovereignty requires Israel's complete withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories, a cessation of hostilities, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

On August 5, 2025, the Lebanese government tasked the army with developing a plan to consolidate state control over weapons, which was approved by the cabinet a month later. Last March, the authorities decided to ban Hezbollah's military and security activities and demand that the movement hand over its weapons to the state, limiting its functions to the political sphere.

Far-Right Brazilian Separatists from the "The South is My Country" movement held an unofficial popular consultation in Balneário Camboriú, asking the local population if they were in favor of separating the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul from Brazil, only 341 people "voted". The result was 314 votes in favor and 27 against. It is crucial to emphasize that the Brazilian Federal Constitution expressly prohibits the secession of any part of the national territory, making this type of plebiscite merely symbolic and without legal effect. The consequences of actual attempts at separation would be severe, constituting crimes against national security and destabilizing the legal and political order of the country, even resulting in war between the federation and the separatists.

Iran warns Trump that a new offensive would escalate the war - Prensa Latina

Article

Tehran, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Iranian Army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia warned US President Donald Trump today that further military action against Iran would extend the war to a wider geographical area of the region.

In a post on the X platform, Akraminia stated that the Iranian armed forces are maintaining their military preparations without being influenced by the actions of their adversary, due to what she described as Washington's history of betraying diplomacy.

He also noted that Iranian forces are closely monitoring US military activities in the region.

"If the US president, under the influence of Zionist threats and deception, embarks once again on an adventure in the region, the flames of war will spread to a wider geographical area," he declared.

The warnings came after the office of Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, reported on Saturday about a meeting with senior military commanders, whom he ordered to respond immediately and without geographical restrictions to any potential attack against the country.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military offensive against Iran that, according to Tehran's figures, resulted in more than 3,000 deaths. The Islamic Republic responded with attacks that caused casualties among American and Israeli personnel before a ceasefire was reached in April.

Subsequently, Washington resumed attacks against targets in Iranian territory, while negotiations between the two sides stalled despite the signing of a memorandum of understanding in mid-June.

Tehran responded with operations against what it identified as US military installations and equipment in Arab countries. Some of these attacks resulted in civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure.

Article

Beirut, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam affirmed today that his country's border crossings will not be used as routes for drug trafficking, after authorities thwarted an attempt to introduce cocaine through Rafik Hariri International Airport.

In a statement, Salam congratulated the General Directorate of Security and Lebanese Customs for disrupting the smuggling operation of some 40 kilograms of cocaine, and highlighted the coordination, cooperation and exchange of information between the two institutions.

The head of government emphasized that Lebanon's land, sea, and air borders will not be used for drug trafficking, money laundering, or other illicit activities.

He also reaffirmed the Executive's commitment to strengthening border controls, intensifying coordination between competent agencies, and fighting smuggling networks and organized crime.

On Saturday, the General Directorate of Security announced the arrest of a Syrian citizen at Rafik Hariri International Airport upon his arrival from Accra, Ghana, in possession of the seized drugs.

According to the statement, authorities had been monitoring the individual and tracking his movements from the plane to customs, where an inspection led to the discovery of 40 packages of cocaine, each weighing one kilogram, along with AirTag electronic tracking devices.

The suspect was arrested and the drugs seized. The investigation continues under the supervision of the competent judicial authorities to clarify the circumstances of the operation and apprehend other possible individuals involved.

Lula again thanks Brazilian voters for their election victory - Prensa Latina

Article

Brasilia, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva today thanked voters, especially young people and senior citizens, on the one-week anniversary of his re-election in the elections of October 25.

Lula stated in a message posted on the social network X that the people wrote a new page in the country's democratic history and expressed his gratitude to the millions of citizens who participated in the electoral process.

“I want to express my deep gratitude to the millions of Brazilians, especially the young people, who carry the hope of the future, and to our beloved senior citizens, who represent the memory, wisdom, and strength of our nation,” he wrote.

He noted that the result represents a victory for democracy, sovereignty, and those who aspire to a more just, strong, and fraternal Brazil.

“Our journey continues,” the ruler added in the post, which was accompanied by a video.

This audiovisual material combines images from the 2026 election campaign with fragments of a speech given by Lula in April 2018, shortly before his imprisonment. In that speech, he affirmed that his ideas would continue to be present and linked his political aspirations with the dreams of his followers.

Media outlets, such as the Brasil 247 website, pointed out that Sunday's message recalled the participation of different generations in the second round of those elections. According to data from the Superior Electoral Court, Lula, of the Workers' Party, received 64 million 256 thousand 232 votes, equivalent to 51.79 percent of the valid votes.

With those amounts, he surpassed Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), who reached 59 million 826 thousand 41 ballots, 48.21 percent. The second referendum saw the participation of 128.2 million voters, out of more than 158.7 million eligible to vote, for an abstention rate of 19.2 percent. With his victory on October 25, Lula became the first Brazilian presidential candidate to reverse in the runoff the disadvantage he had registered in the first stage, three weeks earlier.

In his words, Leo XIV also recalled the beatification, carried out on Saturday in Savannah, Georgia, USA, of Pedro de Corpa and four companions, religious of the Order of Friars Minor, who were murdered in 1597.

The pontiff also referred to the Youth Olympic Games taking place in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, from October 31 to November 13, with the participation of athletes between 15 and 18 years old.

Ecuador begins its fourth curfew of the year - Prensa Latina

Article

Quito, Nov 1 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador began its fourth curfew of the year early this morning, which is being applied this time in five coastal provinces due to high levels of violence.

The mobility restriction, which began in the early hours of Sunday, will remain in effect until November 10 in the provinces of Guayas, Manabí, Los Ríos, El Oro and Esmeraldas.

The uniformed officers carried out checks at strategic locations and focused operations to verify compliance with the provision, which limits circulation between 00:00 and 05:00, local time.

During the first night of the measure, at least 80 people were arrested in Portoviejo, the capital of Manabí, for violating the restriction, reported the area commander, Antonio Tricerri.

In Guayaquil, the country's largest city, agents from the National Police and the Transit and Mobility Authority (ATM) also deployed controls from midnight onwards at various points, including the Portete sector, where they stopped vehicles to check the conditions in which their occupants were traveling.

According to authorities, the measure seeks to facilitate special operations by police and military personnel against criminal organizations.

The new restriction comes a month before the local elections on November 29, when Ecuadorians will elect prefects, mayors, councilors and other local authorities for the next four years.

Furthermore, it coincides with the holiday for the Day of the Dead and the Independence of Cuenca, until November 3, one of the longest holiday periods of the year in Ecuador, so it impacts mobility, the economy and daily activity in the affected provinces.

This curfew adds to those implemented in March, May, and September of this year, amid a security crisis that keeps Ecuador among the countries most affected by violence linked to organized crime.

In January 2024, faced with a wave of violence in the streets and prisons, President Daniel Noboa declared the existence of an internal armed conflict, thereby enabling the participation of the Armed Forces in internal security tasks.

Despite that and other measures, including more than 30 states of emergency and the deployment of uniformed personnel, between January and September of this year the number of homicides reached more than six thousand, according to official data.

Last month, international human rights organizations presented a report warning of the deterioration of democratic guarantees and the criminalization of civil society in Ecuador in the context of the militarization of security.
