Serious question: when has anything ever turned into a worm?
All I can fathom is if a centipede gets into an accident in which all its legs are amputated.

If it’s an obsolete word now, was there ever a time it was in regular use? In other words, was there a time people turned into worms all the time?

Only during the wormocalypse
We all turn to worms eventually.
