Former President George W. Bush’s brother, Neil Bush, has revealed he voted for Democratic candidate James Talarico for U.S. Senate in Texas, calling Donald Trump's bid to overturn the 2020 election "an affront to our democratic institutions."

"I voted early today, and I voted for James Talarico for the United States Senate," the Texan businessman wrote in a post on Facebook on Tuesday in a snub to Republican candidate Ken Paxton.

The 71-year-old son of former Republican President George H. W. Bush and chair of his father's nonprofit Points of Light, wrote that while he has been a Republican for most of his life, character “matters more than party affiliation.”

That’s actually pretty surprising, and for a conservative - impressive.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 64 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Paxton being a piece of shit is a non-partisan thing. There's even a commercial with a former Republican state representative advocating for Talarico

[–] fulcrummed@lemmy.world 26 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Agreed - just surprising for me that someone with brand name recognition would make that choice vocally.

[–] phdepressed@sh.itjust.works 25 points 5 days ago (2 children)

The Texas legislature also tried (but failed) to impeach him. An FBI inquiry into his office had the deaths of two major whistleblowers. Man is corrupt af and probably in some sort of cartel/gang thing. He is not liked and he should not be allowed anywhere near political power so I expect Texas will elect him.

[–] moakley@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

He was impeached. But then he was acquitted by Republicans.

[–] felixthecat@fedia.io 6 points 4 days ago

Don't count texas out. Talarico is polling well and currently has highest levels of early voting in a non presidential election in texas history.

[–] FullPenguin@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Modern partisan politics seem to require GOP candidates to be pieces of shit.

The only consistent policy of today's Republicans is to do whatever will make sensible people push back, which has led to a party full of pedophiles, criminals, corruption, incompetence, and treason.

[–] Azal@pawb.social 2 points 4 days ago

I mean, I live in Missouri, Josh Hawley being a piece of shit is a non-partisan thing. But the second it comes to choices, they'd rather that instead of voting for democrat.

I'll give credit for a conservative doing the bare minimum. It is very difficult for them to remove their lips from the asses of the party leadership.

It fucking shouldn’t be. Democrats are perfectly “conservative” enough for corpos and even farmers. Republicans want to kill poors through legislation.

MAGA hates the Bushes. This is just a quick moneymaking story, not really news as such.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 26 points 4 days ago

"I'm from the Bush family, and his corruption is shocking even to US!"

That's an interesting take given how George W "won" the election against Gore by having the conservative majority SCOTUS stop the Florida re-count effectively handing W the presidency. Final counts have shown Gore would have won if the recount wasn't stopped "because it was taking too long". They would have finished within a day....

[–] Manjushri@piefed.social 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Come on now, they had to stop the counting. Don't you remember the Brooks Brothers Riot? There were acts of violence! People were rioting! Well, not people as such, Republican Staffers mainly, at the direction of Roger Stone. But still, something had to be done!

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago

The wikipedia page has more information for those who want to know: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooks_Brothers_riot

The amount of government malfeasance that just sails past so many many many people here is disheartening.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 13 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

And W's other brother was governor of Florida at the time. No conflict of interest there!

[–] KC_Royalz@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago

Well when you have armed gunmen storm a voting center and those in power in Florida not holding them responsible. Votes don't get counted

[–] nastronot@lemmy.zip 38 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Paxton is truly a lizard person.

They aren’t voting for Talarico as much as voting against that cretin.

Why the TX GOP went along with this is amazing to me. Haha just kidding. The TX GOP is litterally all lizard people.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

They aren’t voting for Talarico as much as voting against that cretin.

They don't want two Ted Cruz representing Texas. Talarico is someone you can negotiate with. Cornyn was, too. Paxton is just a stubborn climbing sociopath who only knows how to turn rightward

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 25 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I had no idea there was a third brother.

[–] BlackSwan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's also Marvin, you can always tell a Milford Man

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I still can't confirm his existence as I haven't seen or heard him.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I've made a huge mistake

I’m crapping while I read this.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago

most polls show Talarico narrowly ahead of Paxton in the closely watched Senate race that could determine party control of the chamber.

Good on Neil Bush for speaking his conscience on this. Regardless of his personal beliefs, he spoke up. And he deserves credit for that.

Texans who vote for Ken Paxton are a complete disgrace to their state and to their country.

[–] Sirdubdee@piefed.social 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Other* brother. I knew about one. Finding out he had another after so many years is blowing my mind.

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago

I'm with you there.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It's a bad look ik the most nepotist neo conservative enablers look like the sane people in the room. GW was a massive idiot who ruined many things about the America people yearn for nowadays.

[–] madcaesar@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

No child left behind gave us the crop of MAGA voters today. They are all dumb as rocks because of W's policies

[–] NathanRanch@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 days ago

Turns out we were right about Bush all along. We just didn't realize the consequences.

[–] nickiwest@lemmy.world -2 points 4 days ago

I don't know many MAGA voters who are 18-26.

I know a lot of them who are 65+, though. We can't blame NCLB for their idiocy.

[–] ElChinchilla@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I was trying to think of a good way to convey exactly this.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

You should wonder why they're okay with democrats of today instead of doubling down that these ghouls must be sane now.

[–] Kcap@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

TIL, Neil Bush. That's it. Never heard of him.

[–] PNW_Doug@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago

Too monstrous for a monstrous family to vote for, that’s quite the accomplishment there, Paxton.

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 7 points 5 days ago

You love to see this kind of thing.

I hope more old school republicans start coming out and saying this exact thing.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Paxton kicked the anthill when he primaried Cornyn.

[–] rumimevlevi@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

If I was a member of a war criminal, I would never show my face in public gathering ever

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 2 points 5 days ago

But America loves its war criminals

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Another?! Two spawns of HW was already two too many!

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

This is getting out of hand. Now there are ~~two~~ three of them

[–] skhayfa@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago
