The vibes are rotten this time around as Next Fest features thousands of AI slop demos

steam should adopt stricter policies with ai-generated games. as it is, even the mandatory disclosure is often just not there. no one wants to play this slop, much less buy it, and it just devalues the whole store (and especially events like these)

i've seen many people straight up considering not buying any game released after 2023, and i can't blame them

I have a hard time even listening to music that came out after 2022/2023. I have to look up the artist and do a thorough background check first.

Fucking sail north got me for a couple months.

Sail North is a "shanty"-esque folk artist/band, and a lot of people think they are using AI (I have no clue if they are or not, that's just the lmgtfy synopsis).

SteamDB has a filter for the AI Content Disclosed tag, which means we can exclude games with it. Now I know some lie, and others also use to state that they don't use AI, however it's the best we've got for now.

For my sanity, I just choose to assume they're not lying unless it is REALLY fucking obvious. Seems less mentally destructive than the alternative of assuming everyone is lying.

The vibes are coded. 🤮

I have seen a comment floating around that "the algorithm" on Next Fest kicks in later this week after it builds out enough datapoints. Right now it's a pretty raw and unfiltered list that eventually shakes out into what people are actually interested in.

Doesn't shock me that such an open platform like Steam is inundated with AI nonsense and Next Fest is a casualty.

Yeah the fests for the past few years have done that, they even added a popup at the start of the page to let people know. But there’s soooooo many demos this time that people are still shouting about it.

Eventually the grifters will realize that the cost to generate + get the game listed on Steam isn’t worth it and will go off to ruin some other industry

sure just like what happened with steam greenlight, which totally wasn't flooded with bullshit before they ended it (and this was without AI slop).

eventually...

Yes, the personalised Next Fest pages should start today (Wednesday). I pray it will work and actually start filtering out the slopvalanche.

I don't know why steam won't let us opt out of seeing AI games. (It's because they'd make less money presumably).

I know that might lead to less games disclosing AI use, but steam should permaban devs that don't disclose, issue refunds to purchasers, and be done with it. People should also be able to report games for AI and there should be a review process.

[–] ranandtoldthat@beehaw.org 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Many people are really bad at detecting AI at that level. And gamers get vengeful. The review process you propose would be immediately overloaded.

I released a game on steam 100% human made and still got a few accusations of using AI in reviews. Who knows how those reviews have hurt sales.

Next time I make a game I'm going to use AI in a way that helps me realize my own vision. It's really not worth keeping a line in the sand anymore since enough people can't actually tell the difference.

What's the name of the game?

[–] Little1Lost@gehirneimer.de 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

wanted to check it out but after 60% being obvious ai i noped out without buying anything

[–] ranandtoldthat@beehaw.org 10 points 3 days ago

You can't buy anything in Next Fest. It's all demos.

[–] AudaciousArmadillo@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Doesn't it still cost $100 or so to publish a game? Its not a huge amount but how is it not deterring more slop?!

[–] t3rmit3@beehaw.org 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The goal of that fee as a rate limiter is to prevent one developer from releasing hundreds of "games", not to prevent thousands of developers from each releasing one.

100 dollars to see your "game" on Steam is a minimal barrier, especially if you have the money to be AI-generating art for games.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 8 points 3 days ago

People are still in the "gold rush" phase of thinking their AI slop game will make it big and give them their money back, and more.
