Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Canada will never understand the deeply ingrained racism in it. We think being polite means we aren't deeply corrupt and flawed or something.

The Alberta advantage podcast had a good episode on the referendum that is basically like "this whole thing is stupid, Canada does suck but the people behind the seperation push are worse somehow."

Everything sucks here. And I'm sick and tired of hearing the libs lib out about how it just an American plot, when it's clearly mostly homegrown dipshits responsible. They act like Trump is going to do a Crimean thing when the situations aren't comparable at all, and try don't understand Ukraine either.

This is an aspect of all the British Settler-Colonies. They all do this "awh gee shucks aren't we so goofy and silly, listen to our funny accents" shtick to cover up being genocidal monstrosities. Something about the British mind created this, like they used silly and self-deprecating humor to cover over barbarity so much that it became a cultural value

Canada offers Starlight Tours to learn about Canadian racism, this guy should take one

Aw dammit. Can North America fucking just collapse and balkanize already.

[–] Monk3brain3@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Canadian balkanization would ultimately help th US empire. We need the US to balkanize. Then it's game on and all the right wing shit heads in the world lose their funding.

The U.S. balkanizing would almost certainly result in a right-wing fiefdom or two among the wreckage. Hard to say how it would play out from there (for instance, what is the foreign policy of independent Texas?), but I doubt it would be a clean break with existing practice.

still would be an improvement over a unified fascist imperialist bloc, which is the current situation

The US balkanizing would lead Iran to intervening in US politics like the CIA intervenes currently around the world.

also who would control the nuclear arms?

I would imagine most of them would be right wing. At the very least, center right. But it's an interesting thought experiment.

I would imagine that Canada, Mexico and maybe Cuba (specifically around Florida) would attempt to exert influence over the borders. The Southern border would be very interesting as the cartels would probably try and take over as much as possible. They'd likely do it through proxies because that's less resource intensive. Canada would probably do the same for most if not all the northern states including new York and California. In both cases, the string holders would probably encourage fighting amongst the fiefdoms until they were able to consolidate power in a friendly ruler. In Florida, I think it would go in a similar way, except with more boots on the ground. They'd likely do that to grab military assets, which would be important on the other fronts as well, but more so for Cuba given their economic situation. So the spots left over would probably be the spots that were of little interest economically and resource wise. I have no doubt that there would be a fight with the remaining American military, but fights are won by those with the best organization and supply chain. Balkanization would mean that the American military wouldn't have any supply chain, so they'd be fighting furiously to attempt to secure whatever their leadership thought was most important, so within a few months, for the most part they'd be reduced to small arms and light vehicles. Which would be why the cartels and Cuba would be able to gain control of an are if they attempted that. Russia/China might even try something for Hawaii and or Alaska. I'd imagine that China would do their usual soft power thing to secure a friend in the Pacific, while Russia would compete with Canada, and likely lose for a similar spot in Alaska. Greenland would be interesting because without the supply chain, those army bases and personnel would be immediately dependent on the Dutch for everything including food. The Dutch would end up getting some serious military upgrades. The rest of the world would breathe. A sigh of relief. Left wing movements would flourish while neoliberal government's would scramble to solidify their populace. Even the right wing in central and south america would see their quality of life instantly become better, and they'd wonder why.

Either way. A fun little thought experiment

I had a dream the US balkanized. The Southwest went communist and I got to live in a geothermal-powered human anthill in the desert. It was pretty dope.

most likely imo is you get an Atlantic/Pacific/Americas split. The real ball in the air is whether a) the successor states stay on the same currency and b) whether that currency can retain the power of the current usd, because if not then cheap imports stop happening and the US goes from being a global concentrator of unequal exchange to actually having to compete on the global economy again. I think that if that happens then the strongest successor state is the one with the most oil, which becomes a Russia-like regional power over central and South America fueled by money from its extractive industries, but its not like the northeast by itself will be able to cow Europe into submission the way that the current US does or that the West will be able to be a serious competitor with China even if it maintains its Pacific colonies.

internally, i predict that the successor states will initially try to get a CIS-type thing going, but that the different factions of bourgeoisie will fuck up the process chasing their own individual bags at the expense of the overall bag.
