Welcome to the News community!
Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on. Keep on-topic
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.
Hopefully we can put this idiocy to rest now.
Hopefully it costs Danielle her job.
at some point this morning she needs to resign. she has to.
also I'm of the opinion that her and the 23% that voted for this need to be arrested by the RCMP for treason but that's just a hollow pipe dream of mine.
Why would she possibly resign? She allowed the referendum to keep the most extreme parts of her base happy, but spoke just enough of unity to keep the other ones happy. She'd probably win an election tomorrow because at the end of the day the majority of voting Albertans is stupid
And now neither of those parts of her base are happy.
don't hold your breath, maple magas have zero shame or take any pride in their work
She won't. There will be no accountability. If she resigns it will be because her band of traitors stab her in the back, not out of any sense of obligation to step down, down the right thing or anything approximating moral clarity.
They're just going to get louder
Lmao
The separatists are already calling this a win.. somehow
0 to 24%...momentumb to the referendumb!

Heres some but not all their comments:
Smith confused everyone with other questions on the ballots, smith cant win without us so were gonna consider removing her. She was elected by separatists and they were sold on the promise that smith was a "secret separatist" and she betrayed those people so we need a new leader.
Interviewer: why not start your own party and run on seperatism?
Seperatist guy: why would we leave the party? Were the super majority of the party. The globalists in the ucp are the minority.
Wow. My head hurts.
We knew from the start that they were not very bright.
Now that this is off the table, the minority that voted for a referendum should join hands with all Canadians and put the entire country forward. Be constructive instead of destructive!
I would love a world where people can change just like that: realize that they were wrong, admit that, and ideally make up for any possible damage they made.
This is not that world. Expect more butthurt, ulterior, sometimes open more often covert undermining activity from them and their handlers.
That won't change until a few of them are in prison.
Looks like most, if not all, of the right wing power grab original 9 questions are passing though
And good luck to them getting movement on any of them.
For sure - but they're going to burn so much energy, and stir up so much shit, trying. Such a waste.
Questions 6-9 say "working with the governments of other willing provinces", so hopefully the other provinces will just tell Alberta to fuck off and then we don't have to worry about those, but you never know.
Other provinces have already so much as said fuck off lol
Half of the questions are racist AF anyways. Proof of citizenship to vote? What kind of fucked up Orwellian world do these dumb-ass white motherfuckers want to live in?
https://results.elections.ab.ca/8400
If the count finished right now, most of those questions would be a mandate to pursue
Where would they go? Make their own country? I have a feeling this is from the biggest idiots in Canada that can't think past 2 years.
The US would swallow it up and Trump would promptly try to rename it Trumpland
Except why would you be a part of the third world without universal access to healthcare?
The only realistic answer is to look over at Crimea.
It was so poorly thought through lol. I was arguing with someone about it and they were talking about how much money Alberta is going to save and I was like "In what currency? Because if you leave, d'you think Canada is still going to let you use the Canadian dollar?" and it was like it genuinely hadn't occurred to them.
And also, Treaty land is federal, not provincial. How was that supposed to work? Never got a good answer on that either.
Alberta would've had to be carved up. I wonder if the bigger cities like Calgary and Edmonton would have voted to stay in Canada leaving only the rural rabble to break off.
From the referendum results so far today it looks like that way, yeah. 80-90% in most of the city areas seem to have voted to stay, it's just higher out in the sticks.
Join America.
This was pretty close to my guesstimate of 25% voting to separate, with a significant percentage of those voting only to get Ottawa's attention.
I do believe, if the Senate is to stay, that it should be more representative of populations of the provinces of Canada. Currently far too many from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
The Senate should be abolished. Bunch of crusty old fucks who are appointed, not elected is about as far away from democracy as it gets
I wouldn't say abolished, but elected would be better.
If we elect the Senate, we will get governments that can't do anything because we will just fill the Senate with the opposite party.
Just get rid of it, it only ever existed for patronage and cronyism.
4 years of unchecked tyranny doesn't appeal to me. I do see your point though.
This question frustrated me because I actually do think senate REFORM is worth investigating.
But that's a federal issue, and I desperately want the AB government to actually govern Alberta instead of acting like the official opposition to the federal government.
Charles Adler (Appointed 2024): The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and Grand Chief Cathy Merrick asked the Prime Minister and Governor General to rescind the radio host's appointment. Critics pointed to past 1999 on-air comments where he referred to Indigenous leaders as "uncivilized boneheads" and "intellectually moribund".
Tom Pitfield and Richard Martel (Appointed July 2026): Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed his long-time principal secretary and top advisor, Tom Pitfield, alongside Conservative MP Richard Martel.
Mulroney appointed his wife's hairdresser, only known as Rinaldo, to the Federal Business Development Bank of Canada .
Even a busted clock like Alberta is right twice a day.
The worry remains that the other 9 questions gives the government a mandate, which nobody wanted a referendum on anyways.
People are literally voting for the alberta government to try and abolish the federal senate.
Ffs
Here's what the rest of Canada says to the separatists aka traitors:

Oh good. I mean how far down would you have to dig to uproot everything you want to take with you?
