Oh, there's definitely a moral objection.

Turns out "the" bible is a terrible source for morals, so I don't care what some bloodthirsty asshole's interpretation of that text happens to be.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

Oh yeah and turns out that egotistical megalomaniacs aren't the best source when it comes to ethics.

"But if you're atheist, where does your moral compass come from?!"

I'm all for freedom of religion, but their rights need to end when they infringe on others' rights

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 40 points 6 days ago

Which tells a lot about the lack of morals in such "megachurch pastors".

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

Oh great, because some mega church clown is the moral instance that can accurately judge this. 🙄

Kind of like the pope if he wasn't too woke I guess 🙄

[–] kurmudgeon@lemmy.world 40 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Christians are ushering in this brutality because they see a country lead by Islam, which punishes women and has public executions and think, damn, I want that, only with my bullshit religion.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago

Yes, this is known as fatwa envy.

[–] stickyprimer@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

They used to have it, even.

[–] stickyprimer@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

This is what Fascism is to me. Not the brutality of this. It’s the fact that there are no actual rules and anything is okay as long as “we” are doing it to “them.”

Religion of peace everybody

You sure about that one?

Where did Jesus speak out against public execution?

In fact, he specifically said that he wasn't here to abolish the old law, but to fulfill it.

And guess what was included in the old law...

[–] Evoke5@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Not a Christian but I read the new testament and Jesus does stop a public execution:

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john+8&version=KJV

They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

[–] nothingcorporate@lemmy.today 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

And Jesus was kind of famously...publicly executed.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago

His public execution was literally necessary too, according to his father's stupid plan.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone -3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

This story wasn't about condemning the practice of public execution, it was about pointing out the hypocrisy of the people participating in a stoning of a woman for adultery. Was it even a public execution (that is, an event people would attend and watch)?

Always just came off as a more vigilante justice thing so I'm not even sure it was a public execution in the way we're referring to. Even if it were an officially adjudicated sentence, I don't recall mention of a crowd to watch or anything. Though it has been years since I've read it so I dunno.

[–] Evoke5@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (2 children)

You can read the whole thing in the link I sent. It was a public execution, with audience participation even.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Gotta show up early to get the good stones.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Lol yeah no thanks. I'll read a good book instead.

Nothing you said changes the message of the story. He doesn't condemn the public execution at all. He just talks people out of participating.

There's also that whole thing about he himself needing to be very brutally publicly executed in order to fulfill some convoluted, nonsensical plan that he himself (in the form of his own father) came up with.

That's like the ultimate condoning of public execution. It literally saved humanity, according to Christians.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago

The guy who walked knowingly to his own public execution and never once condemned the practice? That guy??

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 28 points 6 days ago (3 children)

If even Mike Johnson, who is a professional liar able to justify anything, is saying that live streaming is not a good idea, maybe is not a good idea

But the book says something like this, right?

if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, strike him back sevenfold and show no mercy killing him, so that everyone may know the full wrath of your vengeance

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 days ago

To Johnson it's purely a political calculation. Everything is.

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The difference is Mike Johnson actually has the power to whip votes and put a stop to this.

In theory he has power but I'll remind you that his position is also quite weak. He barely got the speaker position and could easily be removed if he pisses anyone off on the Republican side. Even if he wanted to do something he'd at best be shouted down.

Not defending him mind you I want to hang and spear him but it is the reality of his power, he is less a leader and more a lightning rod.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 days ago

That's definitely somewhere in the Old Testament, but needs more smiting.

[–] caboose2006@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

He's right, which is why we should ditch the bible as a moral compass

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 27 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Being Pro Life DOESNT mean being Pro LIFE!

-The Church!

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The loopholes make it moral whenever they deem it so

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

And for whoever

[–] CoconutLove@lemmy.today 24 points 6 days ago

From the state that requires public schools to inscribe “Thou Shall Not Kill” on their walls, no biblical or moral objection.

[–] lemmylump@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago

Every single motherfucking church like this should be taxed into oblivion.

Church and State separate.

Freedom of religion also means freedom from religion.

Time for all these charlatans to be shut the fuck down.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

I think there was a story in the Bible about Jesus seeing an execution about to happen. How did it end again…? Oh yeah, I think it was ‘everyone grab a rock and kill, kill, kill!’

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 4 points 4 days ago

Yeah, just like when Jesus saw money lenders in the temple. He said "Holy shit that's a good idea. Let's keep making money off these smucks so I can buy 3 private jets."

Also, one cannot serve two master. Between God and money, you will hate one and love the other, and I don't see God around only money, so you might as well focus on that one.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago

Yeah, but that's from Jesus. A lot of so-called xtians seem to be far more excited about the OT, especially the nasty and bloodthirsty parts. And from the NT, they often seem to be more interested in what Paul has to say, which is interesting since Paul never even met Jesus.

I think these types of xtians would be better labeled as Paulians.

[–] RaoulDuke25@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 days ago

Aren't these the same assholes complaining about beheadings live streamed? Maybe we should see public executions for pedos like the hundreds of holy men.

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Coming from the group that used to throw stones at people is pretty rich.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

I mean... technically it will be throwing a really small stone made mostly of metals, at a high rate of speed.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Man without a soul unsuccessfully contemplates morality, more at eleven!

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 8 points 5 days ago

If your megachurch pastors are below the humanitarian level set by the fucking pope, then your slimeball pastors are wrong.

[–] PineRune@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

It's not surprising that a Death Cult has no objections to live streaming a human execution.

[–] RotatingParts@lemmy.ml 11 points 6 days ago

God is death. Just read the old testament. Spread the word, "God is death".

[–] JigglySackles@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Scumbag says scumbag things. News at 11.

[–] Radical_Socialist_t00t@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Oh good, lets ask all the other cults & sects their opinions too

[–] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 4 points 5 days ago

If you're looking in the Bible for morals, you're probably looking in the wrong place.

[–] sns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I suspect he feels the same way about raping children.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

One would hope so, but alas....

[–] TheFuzz@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Seems like they are now issuing Fatwas.

[–] mechoman444@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I mean... Sure. Why would one of the most violet, genocidal, oppressive and vile religions on the plant have any issue at all with an execution being live streamed?

He he he, these American demons are funny. Well, I'm sure he can explain that one to God when he meets Him. 🙃
