We should have legislated a electronic bill of rights, but people felt comfortable because you could technically retain your privacy if you were aware of better options.

Privacy enthusiasts will one day run out options and will join the rest of the normies in the dragnet. Those flock cams are probably the sign its already happened.

The rot has spread to the bloodstream. Amputation will no longer save us.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago

Amputation isn't the way, misleading is. They receive your data, but wrong data, there are always several possibilities to blur your profile by apps and also by your activity.

My neighbor across the street has a Ring camera pointed right at my house, so Amazon doesn’t need a vehicle driving by.

[–] ouch@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is that legal in your jurisdiction?

[–] melfie@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

I’m in the U.S. and it’s doorbell camera. I also have a Reolink doorbell camera pointed their direction, so the main difference is that I’m not sharing videos of them with a big tech company, though I assume they don’t care if they have a Ring camera.

Do people not realize you can get pretty much everything you can get on Amazon on eBay and frequently for cheaper or without the "You have to buy $35 worth of stuff to get free shipping" clause? Or same with Costco for a lot of stuff for that matter.

Just make a conscious choice not to feed the troll.

I stopped buying off eBay after I fell for a well made scam listing and they made it literally impossible to contact a human being so I had to file a charge back. Mind you, this was after they nuked the scammers account AFTER I paid for the order, so they knew they were scamming, didn't reach out at all, and tried to make it impossible to do anything about it.

Fuck eBay. They know damn well they've got scammers, and more importantly, they're perfectly happy to keep their cut after the scam is over. I'll only buy off eBay as a last resort if I need it and can't get it anywhere else.

[–] heavyboots@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Damn that sucks, sorry you got scammed. :/

I’ve e had pretty good luck so far. About the worst experience I’ve ever had was people shipping me things in a knotted plastic grocery bag lol.

Same, I've had better luck getting sellers to communicate and fix shit on eBay than Amazon. Amazon only ever offered refunds, eBay people tried to make it right first. Like when the cabinet I ordered arrived with the glass busted out they gave me a partial refund to just replace the glass (way more than the glass cost), so I didn't have to fuck with sending it back. That was great. The other time I ordered some parts and they left out half they just refunded the whole order and let me keep them.

I like eBay - you can find and support good small sellers (people who are similar to you, just every day regular people). What made you stop shopping at Amazon out of interest? For me it was learning how Amazon treat their employees and union organisers. The pissing in bottles, the leaving the dead man lying on the floor and making people woe to around his corpse. The making people come in during a hurricane. This was 10 - 15 years ago (way before the Ring camera and AWS stuff came out); a buddy of mine get a job in an Amazon distribution centre (UK) and did 47000 steps in one shift. Some horror stories from there. So far eBay seems like the better option IMHO

I felt really bad for using Amazon after all those stories about terrible workplace conditions, but pulled the trigger and cancelled my account after Bezos sucked on Trump’s arsehole during the last US election.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago

I was already on the fence due to repeatedly having problems with orders being wrong or the items description being false advertising. I dropped them altogether when the various stories about working conditions came out.

[–] a_postmodern_hat@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I cancelled my Amazon account a few years ago and tried eBay instead. A lot of stuff I ordered was just proxied from Amazon. It even came in Amazon packaging.

Right Ebay, another one of those very ethical companies.
I bet you make very good conscious choices

[–] ragas@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Where has ebay not been ethical?

[–] thatkomputerkat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

for a fun fact: look up ebay live cockroaches and skip to the first off-ebay result. on not-google. it comes up very high on DuckDuckGo

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 2 days ago

FedEx and UPS are supposed to do the same.

[–] eremophila@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Don't feed the usa

[–] jumping_redditor@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

shipped flour and canned goods?

[–] heavyboots@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Haven’t tried either of those. Might have to go into a Costco for something like that?

[–] dusk@piefed.social 41 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Amazon drivers have no reason to be near my home, we have standards.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Lol you're so much better than the rest of us because you go to target instead of amazon

[–] dusk@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I don't shop at target. Your lack of standards doesn't make me better than you, it makes you worse than me.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

So nice your privileged and have options. Not everyone does.

[–] dusk@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

Your zombie consumerism and apathy are your choices, not mine.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wherever you shop it makes no difference

[–] dusk@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

It really does.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml -5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (5 children)

Except when you buy something in Amazon. Your can see your home also for sure in Google Street View, same as you are even in YT and webs with open life cams

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=open+life+cams

Surveillance is big business for big corps, they put it even in your home and your pocket (Alexa, Siri, GPS, smart TV, smartwatches, smartphones, credit cards, discounter apps......). Only leaving your home, going to the shop, in every city you are at least in half a dozend cams. Privacy nowadays is an illusion.

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You know GPS isn't survaluence it is just a one way very slow signal.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml -2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yes, this what the people think, a Smartphone is always locatable ⨦50m, except you switch it off

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Locatable by the connection to the cell towers. Nothing to do with GPS.

[–] boonhet@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, but that's got nothing to do with GPS.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

No, but anyway it's not correct that GPS function only works in one direction- without GPS, location is made with triangulation fron Cell Towers, which give an aprox locatiob. With GPS on they can find you with a precision of few meters. Not possible if GPS works only in one direction and also not slow, if not, an navigation app wouldn't work.

[–] eneff@discuss.tchncs.de 30 points 3 days ago

Except when you buy something in Amazon.

Which I won't, since I don't.

[–] Pomal@sh.itjust.works 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Except no one in the house has an Amazon account

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 21 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I've ordered items from eBay just to have them arrive at my house in Amazon packaging, delivered by an Amazon driver.

[–] TiredTiger@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago

I've started checking how they claim they're shipping. If it says 2-4 days but doesn't list the method, I avoid it. Also, always check the seller before purchase. I've noticed a lot of Israeli accounts on eBay, mostly shipping from New Jersey.

[–] dusk@piefed.social 13 points 3 days ago

Definitely worthy of negative feedback.

[–] Pomal@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

That sucks 🤷

[–] J92@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Can't you opt out of google street view? Im sure ive seen houses blurred out on there.

[–] raptore39@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

When I get packages delivered by any courier company they take a photo of the package at the door and the front of the house as proof. How is this new? And yes, use the lockers if available for Amazon deliveries or use your work address I guess.

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I might order from Amazon twice a year. Orders always go to the post office or a locker.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 2 days ago

There are stores that accept Amazon delivery as well. For people with mobility and transportation challenges, this is also a challenge.

[–] dropdrip@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Google does this: "wow best thing ever look at the cranks getting upset. No privacy in public places. Thanks Google."

Amazon does this: "wow worst thing ever--they're not even letting me look at the data."

Daily reminder: you're sharing a video hosted on YouTube. Inconsistency and lack of logic will get us to privacy one day. Keep at it gang! Chins up! Port paddle in reverse! Starboard paddle straight--we'll get there in no time! Such enthusiasm!

[–] mriormro@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

I’m sure this self-felating comment is really the kick we need to get us there!
