Both cans are same lot code but one has galvanized looking interior and has a smell I would associate with canned fish. The mango puree itself smells and tastes normal. Even the can that doesn't smell off looks a bit iffy at the seam.

There is another brand with the same issue plus visible corrosion on the rim, and the only other one I've seen is likely worse since the can exteriors are all sticky and dented.

Update: I have emailed what I assume to be the importer. I also found a different brand with the same problem. This one has some of the golen colour at the seam but the galv look plus some darker corroded looking spots elsewhere. 1000034079

The smell I said I would associate with fish is more of a nasal stinging metallic smell, but the only other thing I have detected that smell in was canned fish. I could be misidentifying it though seeing as I have worked with a multitude of metals in the past and I can't put the name of any specific metals to the smell. I drank some of the mango lassi before rinsing the can and noticing the issue but the metallic smell lingers as an aftertaste for quite some time, becoming more noticable as the mango and yogurt taste fades.

I've had this happen too. I couldn't use the can because of the metallic taste. It has put me off buying canned mango pulp for a while.

Not sure about the can, but I'd recommend not eating any canned fruit that had its liner dissolved into it. I don't think the liner was made to be consumed.

To be clear: I'm not a doctor, nor am I an expert in anything I just said. I'm just guessing here

The final product might be from the same lot, but the cans themselves may not be. I wouldn't be as worried about the lining as about the smell.

If it doesn't look right and doesn't smell right, it's an easy decision to make unless you're stuck in a bunker with zombies outside and food is running low.

smell I would associate with canned fish.

Not heavy metal poisoning. Such a smell is always from bacteria. Even when there's real fish, the smell comes from bacteria (but then we think it belongs there).

With mango, that smell doesn't belong there at all, and so I would throw it away in the same second when I smell it.

its not so much a fishy smell, but a metallic one that I have only ever picked up as a scent note in canned fish. It kinda stings in the nasal passage.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago

but a metallic one [...] kinda stings in the nasal passage.

Then maybe ammonia gas, or some acid, but I don't really know.

Botulinum toxin is nothing to fuck with dude. Just chuck that shit and buy a different brand.

[–] oneser@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Straight from the can into my eyebrows

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 1 day ago

Make sure to get under the eye for those crows feet, also.

If you ask, you know you already have something of an answer :) DO NOT EAT THE FISHY MANGO

[–] probable_possum@leminal.space 8 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

Or do and report back with the outcome. You might spend some time on the toilet, so you're going to have time to.

No seriously: don't! Botulism can be lethal. After some days of suffering.

[–] diegantobass@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I can't write back when I'm puking.

[–] probable_possum@leminal.space 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Oh. Right. Glad you didn't try the fishy mango.

[–] diegantobass@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Too tempting

If it's an issue like this, I wouldn't go by smell. You probably don't know what chemical or metal got into the food from a smell.

Humans are generally good at detecting mold/bacteria smells, generally. This is not that.

It looks like a food grade can lacquer to preserve the tin, and it failed. Wouldn't eat the mangoes, and I'd tell the company. It's probably not the end of the world if you ate some but I wouldn't eat the rest.

Don't mess with dented cans and such. Even botulism, the really dangerous bacteria, won't often be smelled.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Don’t mess with dented cans and such.

What's the danger there?

[–] Exeous@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Dented cans can risk causing botulism if the damage breaks the airtight seal of the container, allowing Clostridium botulinum bacteria or spores to enter and grow in the low-oxygen environment

[–] crystalmathadept@lemmy.zip 1 points 7 hours ago

Swollen dented cans are the ones to avoid, as in dented outward

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What would be the entry point if the can's only dented?

[–] theolodis@feddit.org 9 points 1 day ago

A hole would be the entry point. Bacteris and spores are pretty small, so it could be a very small hole.

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 5 points 22 hours ago

How large of a brans is it, and is it from your country. Contact someone and complain.

I work at a small food plant who only sells to our own country. We send out free products all the time as a sorry. Some really dumb complaints but out the free box goes

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Cans shouldn't be made of heavy metals, and the can on the left looks like zinc galvanization. That said, companies all around the world do shitty things so I would look for information specific to this company.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not the metal can I'd be worried about but the coating that now is in the content itself.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social -3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Presumably, they wouldn't be using heavy metals or anything else highly toxic in the lining material meant for food packaging.

That is ... assuming some corpo exec hasn't figured out that they can save $0.003 per can by using toxic lining instead of safe lining.

[–] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 5 points 1 day ago

I doubt it's anything highly toxic but you're still not supposed to eat it as it probably isn't good for you. Teflon isn't good for you either but it's fine for as long as it stays on the pan and doesn't transfer into the food.

[–] Micromot@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago

Maybe try sending that picture to the company that made the mangoes. I am not able to find a good source on if it is toxic or not though.

i would avoid that.

[–] krakloskewm@lemmy.zip -2 points 1 day ago

Not if you can eat the entire can before the gluons from the metal reach critical fart pressure
