I know the US criminal justice system is beyond a joke at this point, but surely something should be done about this, right? Like making up false witnesses is something that can get a lawyer disbarred or something, right? It's like the most basic of basic, even if they use the fancy new jangling keys to do it, it's still something courts aren't supposed to allow.

The last jokers who did this did have the licenses suspended, and this is far more egregious.
A lawyer used ChatGPT to generate briefs that included completely made-up witnesses and testimony while representing a man accused of shooting his wife. When he was caught by the judges, the lawyer blamed it on his own “stupidity.” “It's little comfort to know that my stupidity is what brings us together this afternoon,” New Mexico attorney Stephen D. Aarons said in a hearing last month before five judges. He “assumed” ChatGPT would generate a “bulletproof summary of proceedings.”
The chance of any lawyer ever getting disbarred for using AI abuse is probably zero. That encourages lazy or stupid or incompetent lawyers to use AI. From their perspective - why not use it? You might not get caught. And if you do - you just mention your "stupidity". It also means such lawyers can make shit up and still rely on the ez to use stupidity defense. "Your honor - the error was due to AI..."
To be fair that's true for any job. The amount of shit I'm seeing in tech right now is unreal
Aarons said he hadn’t told his client directly that he was caught using ChatGPT on the case because he’s currently serving life in prison.

Lawyers should be allowed to use chatbots, but only the horny minotaur one. "Your honour I challenged the minotaur to a battle of wits over the facts of the case and it cited these cases as applicable precedent before jerking me off."
