Ah yes, my favorite inconsequential but still telling culture war battlefield, the conservative coffee shop fantasy.
I personally think this whole fantasy exists mostly because coffee shops with many options intimidate right wingers who are deftly afraid of looking stupid socially. It causes a great deal of anxiety in them to see a long list of various coffee options they have no idea how to pronounce because they don't want to admit they have no idea what any of those options are and embarrass themselves socially. Anything that is unknown is a social threat that scares them, because looking like you don't know something is embarrassing and they feel emasculated if that happens to them socially. The MAN knows everything.
Also being forced to learn something annoys them. So the anxiety is rooted in the annoying experience of being forced to learn things. It becomes a core memory, "that time at the coffee shop I was scared of embarrassing myself", and that core memory becomes the foundation of these memes and comics.
That or I'm talking out of my ass idk it's 6am and I just typed out a constant stream of thought.
White people are not ashamed to pronounce words wrong. Every white person pronounces "jalapeno" in a different way. If you have met a million white people, you've heard a million ways to pronounce "jalapeno".
I think the conservative coffee fantasy is rooted in the association of coffee with ruggedness. Coffee is like whiskey or cigars. There is an acquired taste to these things. The conservative lore is that people add sugar to coffee because they are too weak for the bitterness of coffee. Flavored coffee becomes associated with women, like fruity cocktail drinks.
I've never had any problem ordering "large black coffee" at any coffee shop, including starbucks. The notion that coffee shops don't know how to serve black coffee is just made up.
Also Fox News has been promoting a conspiracy theory for years that Starbucks is secretly anti-Christian because they write "Happy Holidays" on their holiday cups.
I worked in a restaurant that had a lot of jalapeneos and still often pronounce it with an anglo J, just because you have to pronounce every ingredient in as fun a way as possible when you say it 800 times a week.
When I try to do it right, it's "hal-ah-peen-oh" but I've also heard people say "hal-ah-pen-oh," which one is correct?
In the Spanish alphabet, ñ is a different letter from n. ñ is called enye. The letter makes the n-sound and the y-sound.
the correct pronunciation is ( ha la peen yo ) or ( ha la payn yo )
A lot of people miss the y-sound, some people use the j-sound instead of h.
Pronouncing jalapeño wrong allows them to signal their belief in superiority of English and whiteness also. They would maybe be embarrassed mispronouncing things like Oakley's or Chevy Silverado.

I agree with this, this is most of it. Another part is the general suspicion of outsiders and external ideas. To them, it’s just rebranded coffee, coffee being a famously cheap thing. They think that a latte is just an overpriced drip coffee, the same way many users here are suspicious of Apple selling overpriced computers. The more breathlessly you explain espresso to them, the more they think you are blowing smoke up their ass.
I'm not talking about pronunciation but rather what the drinks actually are. They still get that pang of anxiety when they have that first experience of asking for "large black coffee" when one is not on the menu, and they also get it because they know they don't know what the name is for that on the menu so they feel like they're exposed as frauds.
The desire to be a white boy with swag and correctly pronounce "jalapeño" vs the caucastic impulse to let 'er rip with "juhlapenno."
Man who does not know how to say "I don't know" and thus often ends up talking out their ass is one of the most common types of guy
That would be a boring post though
that sounds plausible to me, I have a similar kind of irrational anxiety about basically most situations
it happened to me the other day actually
