Re-watching FX comedies again.

Finished "what we do in the shadows" Just started " you're the worst"

Loving them

Ooh Also just watched "My name is Earl" for the first time and loved it

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

I watched You're the Worst for the first time over the summer, it was so good.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Golden Axe is Temu Vox Machina, but that's not to say it's bad, exactly.

[–] Fierro@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Wifey doesn't usually like cartooney fantasy, almost exclusively likes romantic comedies, romance dramas and catastrophe movies... For some reason I cannot explain, she's loving one piece live action.

Anyone who is into one piece and has trouble sharing tastes with your partner, try it. I'm really liking it so far (we're barely four episodes in). The casting IMO is fantastic (I'm sure I'm not the first one noticing) and the changes work really well, cinematography does a few kinda odd dreammy things like these low angle face closeups with bokeh that somehow tie everything together with a strong aesthetic.

It's also fun and silly with just enough seriousness to pass for a more mainstream (non anime oriented) show.

I've seen some screenshots here and there and was worried some things would be too goofy, but it works really well in action.

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm certain I'm not the only one.

I just finished Shogun. Pretty good, don't know why is not more known

[–] korthrun@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago

I think it's pretty well known, but it's not super popular due to requiring people to read dialogue instead of multitasking while listening to the 5th rehash of a basic plot point.

Pretty great show :D

[–] bowsertattoo@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago

Is it not?? Based on famous book, was already a show, won a bunch of awards, is getting a sequel. Anyway, I liked it too! no clue what they'll do for s02 though since the book story already ended

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I've been meaning to check this out for a while, but the wife isn't the biggest subtitle fan so I don't know if I could get her into this one.

Does season 1 end where the old series ends? I've been curious after hearing it was getting more seasons.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No idea how the og series end and don't want to spoil S01 ending here.

About the subtitles, it is extremely important to see it subbed. The way Mariko translate the words between the Japanese and the English guy is really important to the development of the plot and the characters. It would be interesting to have a version of the show more centered on the English guy without any subtitles until he starts learning Japanese and have the experience of not understanding what is happening around him until he starts understanding too

This is how the 1980 miniseries did it! 😆

The viewer is supposed to go through the same progression as Blackthorne, being at the mercy of translation and body language/actions until he learns Japanese. There is some narration and you get subs as he learns the language.

From some quick reading, Blackthorne is not as much the main POV in the new series, but he is in the original.

It's on archive.org if you want to watch it.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Being old and shit I was completely sure that everyone just speak English and the audience had to understand that they actually speak Japanese.

Well, I guess I'm watching that version too.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

It's been a few years since I watched it, so I had to look it up to check for sure on the language, and it's funny as so many threads show up on movie forums asking where the heck all the subs are at, and everyone else responds "yooooo, that's the whole point!"

It sounds both series cover the same content, but from fairly different POVs, so you should still get a unique experience from it even though you have major spoilers from having seen the new one. I hope you enjoy it!

Lanterns is surprisingly engaging. I like shows with slow complex plots. Not your typical superhero show with asplosions. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are good.

Slow Horses.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Lanterns is super solid, and I honestly really liked the ending once I gave it a beat. I'll say no more in case you haven't seen it yet.

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

+1 for Lanterns.

My only regret is I started a week early, and could only binge the first 7 episodes!

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Rewatching The Expanse. I remember I was very critical of it first time around, but I also had the books fresh in my mind then. Second time around, I’m enjoying it a lot more.

Just finished the 3rd season. From what I remember tho, the show goes off the rails before ScyFy drops it, and then Amazon has to fight to get it back on the rails before it gets good again.

My biggest gripe of course with the show is that they quit with the Earth, Mars, Belter conflict resolution and we never get to see the cool alien war.

Still, it’s worth a watch for those who haven’t seen it. It’s solid sci-fi and it scratches a certain space itch.

[–] Babysoul@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

This is reminding me of all those old syfy shows i need tk revisit like Killjoy, 12 monkeys, magician

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We are at just about the right spot to get (most of) the original cast back and pick things up.

Hopefully Captive's War will be decent as well. I'm enjoying the books.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh wow! Thanks! I didn’t even know about this new series by these guys. I’ll check it out!

But yeah I forgot about the Earthers who disappeared behind a gate and told everyone fuck off, then emerge as a fascist nation.

Been reading The Final Architecture series by Adrian Tchaikovsky which with its similarities (and differences) to The Expanse it got me itching to revisit the series. I’d have no doubt that Tchaikovsky was inspired by S A Corey when writing it.

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Maybe it's been long enough. I'll rewatch the first half, anyway.

I'm running out of things to watch, so thanks for the reminder.

[–] nocturne@slrpnk.net 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I really enjoyed the expanse, it is something I need to watch again soon.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I started watching Shameless (USA version) this evening.

So good! So very very interesting. Another example of americans taking a popular british show and making it actually palatable for me, a british person.

It's (hopefully) unrealistic in a lot of ways but i find it so heartwarming and it inspires you to keep on striving and to treat people well.

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Frank is a superhero in that show, with all he survives.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Could've made it a Hancock crossover

[–] iturnedintoanewt@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Slow Horses. Really hooked up, I also loved the credits track on this last episode.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Taskmaster has been about the only regular series I've been watching lately. The lineup of contestants feels very well balanced in their types of humor, so that's been fun. The Greek theme of the house looks really good as well.

Checked out ep 1 of the new Simpsons season. I kinda told myself I wasn't going to, and to just be done with it, but I was bored and gave in. I was not any less bored when it was over.

Also watching this month's Grand Sumo tournament. I forgot it was this month, so I missed it as it was coming out, but I saw a post in /All, so now I've been trying to avoid spoilers. c/Sumo got me interested earlier this year, and as someone not a sports person, it's been a ton of fun and rather easy to start following. I didn't think I could get my wife into it, but halfway through the second tournament I watched, she started to get into it as well, and she cheers for her favorite rikishi now too. It's fun to watch because NHK puts the highlights on Youtube, so each day you can watch in just under a half hour, it's got English commentary, and matches don't often last more than a couple seconds, so it's easy to stop and go do other things if you can't sit and watch it all at once. Their power and agility is really something else! It's something I never thought I'd be into, but it sucked me in fast once I gave it a fair go.

[–] Pronell@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Seconding Taskmaster.

Every show is on YouTube and I think it's on Hulu now as well. It's probably on an actual channel in the UK too.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

It's such a fun show. We tried to get tickets to the North American tour, but bots bought all the tickets in about 3 seconds. Boo.

I loved seeing Kumail Manjiani on the last season and Jason Mantzoukas before that. All the UK comedians I end up loving, but it was fun having some people that I was already familiar with.

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

After being a fan of Game Changer I tried to watch Taskmaster because the shows are really close conceptually. But the format of "interview and pre recorded clips" bored me. The section were they play "live" against each other was way more funny.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I hadn't heard of Game Changer, but it looks like a lot of people I like have been on it, so I'll have to take a look at that.

The things I like about the segments being pre-recorded is that sometimes the contestants will have forgotten certain things they did, they can add some post production to challenges where they create a video short or song, or they can play a joke on a contestant and then we see how it plays out over the season. I think it was the previous season they had a guy carry an egg in a necklace around, and whenever Alex blew the whistle, he'd have to stop whatever he was doing and present the egg. At first he thinks everyone has to do it, but as the season plays back, he learns it's just him, and as a viewer, after a while I'd forget it too, and the when randomly hearing the whistle, it's "ohhh, he better grab that egg fast!"

Also, when they present the clips and make it look like one person has won an event, and then they pull a "but wait!" and show them cheating or accidentally breaking a rule and they get disqualified is funny.

Nothing wrong with not liking it of course!

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 3 points 5 days ago

Try to watch it from the beginning (knowing the players and being para social with them is half the fun) but skip season 3 (covid season) except s03e01. That one is good.

[–] nocturne@slrpnk.net 6 points 6 days ago

It is the time of year i rewatch Firefly to coincide with the show's release.

I have also been watching Lanterns, i am really enjoying this. It is a superhero show without being all action and no substance.

I am also continuing my Addams Family 1964 rewatch. Last night was episode 3.

The Addams Family (1964) Rewatch

Season 1 Episode 1

Season 1 Episode 2

Season 1 Episode 3

Scrubs revival s02. Still so good.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 5 days ago

yeah caught second half of 01 and 02. not bad. got back to the old format and making callbacks to itself. better than the med school thing.

X-Men '97 S02 Chad Powers S02

I'm really liking X-Men '97

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago

Widow's Bay

would strongly recommend.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 3 points 6 days ago

The original Code Geass. The themes are still relevant to this day.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago

My favorites over the summer have been Widows Bay, Reacher, and Silo.

At some point, I realized that three of my favorite recent watches were all about underground shelters following some sort of conflagration, and now everybody is getting curious about what's outside: Silo, Fallout, and Paradise.

[–] bowsertattoo@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago

Just finished House of the Dragon S03 and the other GoT spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. HotD I watch for the dragons, it delivers. AKotSK surprised me, I really like it.

Movies: The Fury (another dePalma about psychics), Pressure (WW2 drama with Brendan Frasier), Mars Express (hand-drawn animation cyberpunk), Planetes (vintage anime, Nasa-punk), Coyote v Acme (animation gold), Forgotten Island (animation pink), Ted Lasso (girls team is great), Star Trek DS9 (rewatching, more relevant than ever)

Comic book for bonus points: Maus (holocaust documentary where every nation is anthropomorphic animals, the nazis are cats, the mice go to maushwitz)

[–] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 2 points 5 days ago

I'm watching the ships roll in, then I watch em roll away again. Highly reccomend.

[–] korthrun@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've finally gotten around to watching Breaking Bad. I'm at the start of season 2 right now. It's clearly a quality show. Even when I think a plot line or performance is lacking, the production itself is always nice.

I've noticed the "brown filter = Mexico" thing in American cinema for a while but feel like I'm seeing where the memes about it really come from. It's pretty heavily used in this show.

So far I would recommend it!

I will also always recommend the Buffy the vampire slayer T.V. show, Psych, and Monk.

Yes I love the old 'weekly procedural'.

[–] turdburglar@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

you should check out ludwig for more procedural goodness

I just finished "The East Palace" and enjoyed it a lot. As a bonus the Ggeomeoksali is really cute,at least to look at:

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago

So out of what im watching I want to give a shout out for primal. Except for one episode it does not really use language so its kinda neat that anyone could be watching it and get the same experience.

[–] orionsbelt@midwest.social 2 points 6 days ago

the paper s02!
