In July, there was a sudden spike in .SI (Slovenia) domain name sales, and now that Trump has announced AI will be rebranded SI, their owners are attempting to resell them for millions of dollars.

No one is going to use "superintelligence".

There's too much culture surrounding "AI".

This is like Twitter renaming themselves "x".

What a stupid grift lol

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Also genuinely only idiots think it surpasses human intelligence in any way whatsoever.

[–] Sina@beehaw.org 2 points 4 days ago

I understand the anti Ai sentiment, but "any way" is quite broad. Yes calling it super intelligence right now is a grift, but saying current frontier models are not better than humans in any respect is just as ridiculous. They are better at reviewing code for example, can make sense of large sections of unintelligible spaghetti like no human can.

There's some cleverness behind it. The government is legally mandated to only refer to AI as SI, so that will theoretically boost the value of the squatted domains among the people obsessed with the stuff.

Even a gold rush can enrich a shovel salesman.

The same cleverness involved in not paying for pianos that have been supplied to you, sure

[–] Powderhorn@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago

Only a rube actually pays for pianos. Not paying is called being smart.

This is like Twitter renaming themselves "x".

Not really a good example, seeing as they were pretty successful, even if it a terrible name.

[–] ranandtoldthat@beehaw.org 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Were they? They took one of the most recognizable brands of the century and made something people tend to avoid referring to because it's hard to.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Im not aware of any examples of people refusing to refer to it...?

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 6 points 1 week ago

Me. I still call it twitter.

[–] Midnitte@beehaw.org 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean, they themselves kept "formerly twitter" in their emails for years (it might even still be there?)

They bungled it so bad that people still use "twitter" now, lmao.

I wish that were true.

Their new owners, right? Like bought last week? Scams everywhere.

[–] XLE@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Even farther back - the biggest chunk was bought all the way back in July !

It's almost like there is rampant corruption going on or something!!

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 15 points 1 week ago

I hope Elon has to spend a few billion to rebrand xAI now.

[–] Arghblarg@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago

.si = stochastic inaccuracy, not 'super intelligence'.

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 week ago

Trump sees opportunities for corruption everywhere.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I’m going to deadname the shit out of that just like I do Facebook and twitter.

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is why I needs a character with the tops and bottom lines, I thought it was Sl not SI....okay yes different if I recalled upper case but brain doesn't always differentiate properly at first glance between upper and lower case (unsure if noticable second one was lower case L, but confusing helps make my point).

Also just another grift from the tangerine con man. I bet he barely knows what's going on these days just shouts at things until they pump him fill of medicatiins to be as coherent as we're used to seeing. Thankfully for their work, he was rarely coherent.

[–] XLE@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

Considering it's the domain for Slovenia, it's understandable you'd assume L instead of i... Had double-check it myself.

Wonder how many .SL domains are out there and whether they have similar names for a much lower price.

What does S stand for?

I'm personally all for rebranding "AI", because current "AI" is not intelligent. Before current "AI", the term AI meant that a computer would basically have human skills combined with computer skills, and current "AI" certainly falls short in many human skills.

[–] for_some_delta@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Artificial Intelligence is an old field of study. I dislike that LLM's are being called AI broadly. I also think algorithm and CGI are misused. That's all a tangent.

The S is for Snake. Not sure how they spell oil with an I.

[–] lemmyvore@feddit.nl 1 points 1 week ago

I mean it's all "AI" in the very broad sense. We've been on a journey to research and improve AI for many decades now. You can argue that any self-reliant automation (like Roombas) is a form of AI.

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Now that's even more stupid than calling it "AI"

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 12 points 1 week ago

Are you surprised? It was trumps idea.
