She had bought raw goat milk from a farm recommended to her in a Facebook group run by her chiropractor. Marris had hoped the milk, unprocessed and natural, would help with her daughter Brooklyn’s constipation. But doctors now suspected the unpasteurized milk, which hadn’t been heated to kill off pathogens, was the source of the toddler’s severe E. coli infection.
The parents should shoulder some responsibility here too. It's not like the kid just found the milk and drank it. We learn about what pasteurization is and why it's important in high school. Barring that, she obviously has access to the internet to do any iota of research on why raw milk is a bad fucking idea. If a parent gives an infant alcohol to keep them quiet and it causes their liver to fail, they are held responsible. There's no reason that this should be any different.
Should the farm also be held responsible? Absolutely. But "they let me buy it" isn't a defence.
