This is just slavery. Fuck the USA. What a nightmare to live in

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 36 points 6 days ago

Yay Capitalism! /s

[–] Frostible@piefed.social 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

had a close friend try to defend 6 sick days a year as "generous"

lmao.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What is wrong with some people? Was he never sick? Does he not know sickness is a real thing? Jeez.

[–] Frostible@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

unfortunately i see it way too often in this country, eventually you get deep enough to become unable to reject the absurdity, as it would mean acknowledging your own status as a slave

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

Makes sense. Cognitive dissonance. Hard to blame as noone really wants to admit he's basically just a slave with no option.

Although there is an option. Emigration. Be abetted treated slave elsewhere. But that probably also won't come to mind if you're already adamant you're in the greatest nation already 😑

It's spreading all over the world, I hope the rest are able to stop it

Long- and short-term disability need regulation. Companies cut funding to their own employees at times when it hurts the most while also throwing them to the health insurance vultures.

It sends the message fuck you, find your own way or die.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 32 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Why are private companies even in the loop? Where I live, the government pays disability.

[–] CIA_chatbot@lemmy.world 36 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Murica, the ultra rich making anything related to the welfare of others “communism”

Basically 100 years of social engineering to convince 50% of the country that any that benefits them is evil and wrong

You don't ask for favors when your life is through

You've got a right to what's coming to you

Your boss gets a pension when he is too old

You helped him retire, you're out in the cold

Too old to work, too old to work

When you're too old to work and you're too young to die

Who will take care of you, how'll you get by

Whеn you're too old to work and you're too young to die?

Too old to work

The american dream is a nightmare.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 15 points 5 days ago (1 children)

American here, this isn't even remotely the saddest story I've heard. In fact, it's a pretty happy one.

I'm not joking.

The American safety net is in israel right now. These guys just don't fucking care about us. We are strategic human capital and we don't matter. And these people claim they're 'godly' . Imagine if they were satanist

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

I feel like american christianity has already taken the worst parts of laveyian satanism

[–] destructdisc@lemmy.world 13 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Imagine if they were Satanist

We'd be a hell of a lot better off, considering levelheadedness and rationalism are central tenets of Satanism

It's been liquified and is no longer recognized as such.

This is conservatism. Conservatives (including neo-liberals) serve the billionaire class. Conservatives have ALWAYS been the foot-soldiers of the wealthy.

It is conservatives who despise unions and conservatives who violently attack and murder union members for the rich during strikes. It is conservatives who allow the rich to be immune to laws and taxes.

Conservatives are doing this to us. They cannot stop on their own. We must physically, forcibly, violently help them stop. If we do not, they will kill us all.

The boss cannot be defeated until his foot-soldiers are dead.

No vitals for 10 minutes doesn't make sense

  1. Anyone without vitals for 10 minutes would he dead

  2. They should have still had vitals with a heart attack

[–] Vex_Detrause@lemmy.ca 42 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

If CPR is keeping your blood flowing for 10 mins then you don't have vitals. CPR stops when your vitals comes back or when they pronounce you are dead-dead.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 24 points 6 days ago (2 children)

That's not the case.

  1. people round numbers. In a casual setting 8 minutes and 10 minutes are the same.
  2. 10 minutes without detectable vital signs is survivable, albeit extremely serious.
  3. If you have sudden cardiac arrest and get CPR from a random bystander you have a 20% chance of surviving to leave the hospital. The sooner a defibrillator can restart the heart the better.
  4. I'm not sure why you say they should have still had vitals with a heart attack. Most heart attacks don't leave you with none, but it's not all by any means. Lack of blood flow to the heart can easily cause it to stop beating.

Ultimately though, the part that matters is that the part you found implausible was the medical details, not that someone would go back to work shortly after a severe emergency while still concerned about their own sudden death because they can't afford to recover.

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The sooner a defibrillator can restart the heart the better.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defibrillation

Defibrillators don't restart the heart, that's a common misconception. They effectively shock-reset it so that it can resume its normal beating rhythm.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago (3 children)

You are correct, it was a lazy-ish shortcut on my part.
The sooner a defibrillator can be used to induce the hearts electrical rhythm to resume ordered behavior and allow meaningful contractions to pump blood, the better.

Even more succinctly: YELL 911 AED CPR GOGOGO

The AED can only reset electric rythyms. Not every source of not having a pulse is due to chaotic electrical rhythm, not every electrical issue has a lack of pulse. "Stopped" and "restart" are ambiguous. I would generally forgive the usage of "not working" and "make start working" from anyone less trained than an EMT.

Random bystanders are way too concerned about breaking ribs.

If you see me on the ground with no heartbeat, break my fucking ribs when you do that shit. If you don't hear them snap, you aren't trying hard enough.

[–] littlewonder@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Fun fact: people are often hesitant or uncomfortable to do effective AED and CPR on peeps with breasts because they either weren't taught about it or are too embarrassed. Get out my tits if I'm buying the farm. I'd rather my girls get exposed than fucking die.

For the curious: It's ok if you end up touching breast tissue when performing CPR. It happens, especially for those with large breasts.

When using an AED you need to expose the chest and remove/cut off the bra to get the pads placed correctly, to avoid arcing with an underwire, and to get gel on the skin under the pads.

Indentured servitude for the ability to exist.

[–] scathliath@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 5 days ago

I had a colleague who went into a diabetic shock at work. Passed out, due to other related things, his retina disconnected. They had him back in two weeks, and framed him for stealing cash from the register rather than cover the treatment to recover. Gotta love corporate America.

Had another buddy, and three others conveniently murdered the night before a Lyft Union contract was up for negotiation in my home city. Needless to say, negotiations were conveniently cancelled, and the union disbanded in following days, suddenly lacking four of the main officers.

Just saying, if you think you're costing the corporations too much, none of us are, and they'll pay to make sure you don't.

[–] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 13 points 6 days ago

This sums up capitalism, i.e. for-profit institution in general.

I don't know where the guy in the post is from. When I started a job with disability benefits (not sure if they were from the company or the state), they emphasized that we needed to look at the tax / take-home implications for if we were ever on disability.

If we had our disability insurance payment taken out of our paycheck before taxes were paid from our paycheck, then we would also owe taxes on any payments we got while we were on disability. If we paid taxes first and then paid for our disability insurance, then any payments would be tax-free.

Thing was, after taxes and deductions from our regular paycheck, we only got about 80% of the money we'd earned. And disability paid 80% of our regular paycheck. So if you paid for disability after paying taxes, you would still have about the same amount of income (though being disabled would bring in a bunch of new expenses). But if you paid for disability before paying taxes, then disability would pay 80% of your regular paycheck, and then it would be taxed - meaning you'd only be getting about 65% of your usual income.

I know it's not like that everywhere, and many places don't even have disability anymore. But if you're getting disability insurance deducted from your paycheck, it's worth checking the tax/income implications if you ever need to claim it.

It was international news when China proposed raising it's maximum retirement age to 63.

I was told that this proved only Capitalism could guarantee a good retirement.

Lhand ov the Fee!

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

This is pretty much what I'm looking at if I get hurt at work. At best I can get 60% of my normal take home, or if I pay like 50-100+/mo more, I can get a whole 6.67% more! Totally worth it! /s
