Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Snip:

The US military has completely withdrawn from Iraq, DPA reported on 27 September, citing an Iraqi government official.

All US combat troops and logistical support forces have left the country, the official told the German news agency on Sunday.

[...]

Before the withdrawal, US forces had reduced their presence in Iraq, which first began with the illegal invasion of the country ordered by former president George Bush in 2003.

US forces were stationed in Erbil in the Kurdish autonomous region, at a base near Baghdad Airport, and in the Green Zone, a fortified area of the capital home to the parliament and US embassy.

Iraqi Kurdish leaders say the US withdrawal will leave their region… vulnerable to Iranian attacks

Are you fucking stupid? Getting US troops out of your country is the best way to assure you aren’t attacked by Iran. They’re only attacking countries where US troops are!

The Kurds are just salty that the concept of their own ethnostate is dead in the ditch, and the neighbours that they tried to break away from aren't entirely happy about their collusion with the world's largest terrorist force from halfway across the world.

Sad state of affairs but like, anyone that sided with the US after the Minab school massacre deserves what's coming for them

Like holy shit that’s such a stupid thing to say I’m like “motherfuckers can you read”

[–] WashedAnus@hexbear.net 49 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Last line of the article:

The move, announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi after coming to power this spring, was later postponed and is now due to take place in June next year.

A little hard to parse

[–] Socialism_Is_The_Alternative@hexbear.net 44 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That's referring to a US imperialist scheme to try pressuring Iraqi resistance forces into disarming. Of course, they will not disarm -- that would be suicidal for Iraq. So Baghdad had to put off the so-called "deadline" until next year...

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago

not disarm -- that would be suicidal for Iraq

Whaaaaaat? Psh, nooooo, it would be a great idea, look how well it worked out for Lebanon

[–] WashedAnus@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Ah, that makes much more sense. I read it as US forces were both leaving and staying until June. Thank you.

[–] Moomoo_Milk@hexbear.net 42 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Never should’ve been there in the first place.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

And then the next best time to not have been there was when Iraq democratically (because that's been SO important) voted for the troops to leave, and then the next best time was the SECOND time Iraq democratically voted for them to leave

Because spreading democracy there was so important

Billions and billions of profit. Don't be fooled, the war-profiteers do not consider human life (American or not) a loss, and instability is directly profitable. The Iraq war and its consequences generated TRILLIONS of "investment" for many parts of the American economy, both from the US state itself and from Gulf states and others. That they now also control the Iraqi oil is positive, but not even the point.

Importantly, the US yearly one trillion+ defense budget and the investments from other vassal states in Asia CANNOT go on if the dollar value isn't stable enough for them to just keep printing. I personally can't imagine anything they wouldn't do to keep the printing going.

The myth of an "inept empire" needs to die. You don't want to be on the Chomsky side of the Chomsky-Parenti divide.

I know they're doing it for profit but I feel it's very shortsighted, the capacity of a million people consuming your goods is likely a higher profit than eeking out cheaper gas

[–] StalinsGiantSpoon@hexbear.net 36 points 1 week ago (4 children)

it is funny how countries or groups ally with the USA and then are baffled when they are suddenly abandoned when theyve served their purpose. Once Ukraine runs out of homeless and disabled people to throw at Russia theyll wish they had read a book or even googled what happens when a vassal state has run out of purpose.

"They'd never do it to ME, I'm their SPECIAL friend"

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

there can only be one isntrael though

[–] huf@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

if this gambit actually worked and russia got balkanized, ukraine would become a permanent base to keep the region in chaos. it would be the only democracy in eastern europe.

[–] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 week ago

I remember the sudden appearance of a bajillion secessionist movements on Wikipedia the week Russia invaded Ukraine.

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

extra funny because kissinger admitted it

"Your different than those other countries. They're all losers, but you're cool!" - USA, probably

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

it's happening?? it's finally happening????

i won't believe it till i see a PMU dude doing a fortnite dance on their abandoned kit but this means Iraq avoids a civil war for a grain

[–] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 week ago

I mean technically the Kurdish region is at war with Iran, while the rest isn’t. Thats a civil war kind of.

[–] none@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

is it because they need their people and stuff to fight elsewhere?

[–] SocialistVibes01@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 week ago

Go home, yankee, go home

[–] 3scene@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 week ago

Great, now give them their money back.
