A couple days ago I was swapping out my GPU. As I was carefully removing the glass side cover, it basically exploded in my hands. I don’t even know how.

There’s glass all over the room and I’m bleeding from the little shards that hit my hands and arms. Every time I think I got all the glass I find another piece. I finally get it all, replace the GPU and fire up the PC.

I hear crunching sounds that seem like they’re coming from the fans on the front. I shut down so I can vacuum out the remaining shards. As I’m taking off the glass front cover, that shit slips out of my fingers and fucking shatters on the floor.

I couldn’t do anything but laugh at that point. I cleaned up again and decided I’m not going anywhere today because it’s one of those fucking days.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 20 points 11 months ago

This is why i dont have any interest in glass side panels.

I dont even like clear side panels, but if i have it i'll take acrylic.. sure, it supposedly scratches easier, but wtf are you doing to get it scratched in the first place? probably the same kinda stuff that breaks tempered glass, lol.

[-] blaine@lemmy.ml 10 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Same here. Call me old-fashioned, but the only part of my computer I have any interest in looking at is whatever is being rendered on the monitor.

I don't need any LEDs in my PC because the case is a black metal box with no side panels. Any time/effort/money spent on making a PC "look cool" is time/effort/money that should have been spent making it perform better.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

I have LEDs in my computer against my will, because the heatsink and motherboard both came with them and to get ones that didnt would have cost more.

My GPU used to have them too, but I recently upgraded to a new one that doesnt, which is fan-fucking-tastic in my opinion.

Looks like the floor of a abattoir after a unicorn butchering.

5 minutes into my shift the other day I took a hydraulic shower because some dingleberry didn't report an accident where they broke a hydraulic hose on their forklift

They just parked it, grabbed a different forklift, then finished their shift

Then I came in to do my forklift inspections and got blasted with hydraulic fluid from the severed hose the moment I started my testing

So I had to fill out a shit ton of additional paperwork and scrub all the fluid off of me with the soap we had available (foaming hand soap)

I'm just happy that I had extra clothes in my car because if I didn't that would have really ruined my day

All in all, a really shitty way to start a Friday

[-] slurpeesoforion@startrek.website 12 points 11 months ago

Did they do their pre-shift safety inspection?

[-] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 11 months ago

I'm the guy who does all of our forklift inspections at my facility for all 60ish of our forklifts every day‡ (the bosses think it more efficient having 1 person check them all rather than everyone checking their lifts)

What the person had done after tearing the hose was clean up the forklift with paper towels and jam the hose back onto the connector by hand (saw the camera footage because I have access to those (for some reason‡‡)) which is why I missed seeing the busted line on my visual inspection

There were a series of very "fun" pre-shift meetings the following day that's for sure, and dingleberry got a 3 day suspension for not reporting the accident that tore the hose

‡ I also recently got the position because the other guy walked off due to a disagreement with manglement. This incident was the first Friday of having the position after the other guy left. They gave me fuck all for training (basically only the paperwork side on the day they left). But needless to say I've got a better checklist for those inspections now.

‡‡ I've talked with IT about it (among so many other info sec concerns) over the years and they've assured me (and my bosses) that they've revoked access. Yet it has never gone away. They're great.

[-] lazylion_ca@lemmy.ca 8 points 11 months ago

Better one guy who knows what to look for than 60 guys who just shrug and check the boxes.

[-] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 11 months ago

Straight up though the previous guy basically shrugged and ticked boxes for a hell of a long time

Literally the first week I was doing the job I had to get oil for 15 forklifts due to them being so low on oil that it didn't even touch the dip sticks

I've also pulled so much crap out of the engine bays on those things it's crazy, and a lot of it was full of cottonwood fluff so it's been in there for almost a year

[-] ericbomb@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

So the "disagreement" with management was they wanted him to do something in exchange for his paycheck?

[-] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 11 months ago

Funnily enough: no. They were unaware how much he was letting things go, they are aware now but they weren't aware at the time.

The disagreement was because they were changing his start time from 5am to 9:30am.

[-] 0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 months ago

They have a good worker now... hope they don't forget that allong the line.

Wife had an important conversation with her adult son. One of those, "I didn't tell you this before because you were a kid; you are clearly an adult now. There are things in family history that you should know."

Went well. I wasn't there because I'm not blood and wasn't around for the relevant events. Besides, they need time without step-dad.

Spent entire day worried for them and hoping it would go well. Sounds like it did. Good outcome for a kind of draining, high-stakes day.

Just yesterday, work was not going very well, and I received a phone call from my mother saying my sister had a fever. I was supposed to spend New Year's with them, so those plans were canceled.

It's ok, I went shopping, got a massive amount of snacks and food and am going to have an amazing New Year's Eve by myself, and nobody can stop me. Plus some friends invited me to play video games online with them and I rarely ever have the time, so that's going to be fun.

In November, I was sick for a month. I was coughing like crazy after contracting a respiratory virus.

Early December, I'm getting better. I was doing my things, like, changing my son's bedsheets, when I had a small cough. And I heard "clok" sound in my body, followed by a very intense pain in my ribcage.

I had cracked a rib. Not caused by how intense the cough was, but by repetition of the coughing for more than a month.

[-] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 11 months ago

I didn't know that was possible, new fear unlocked.

[-] june@lemmy.world 22 points 11 months ago

It happened over two days.

Thursday 2 weeks ago I got laid off due to the economic environment.

The stock market hit a new record high that day.

The next day a grant I got one of my programs named in came through for 80k. Between that and my other program revenue, I’d have been fully paying for myself the next 2 years.

3 days ago. Main drain pipe for the house clogged. Poo water came up both shower drains. We had the house cleaned that morning. Toilets unusable for most of the day. $800 to get it fixed due to complications because of old house. At least it was fixed same day I guess.

Well, I flew back from the holiday break at my mom's house. It was stressful and not relaxing because she's getting up there in age and there was a lot of stuff I needed to do with her.

Anyway, a few things happened with getting home that made the trip longer. Had to check in my carry-on at the gate because no room, so I had to wait for my bag to come through on carousel. Then, I had to walk 20 minutes to where my car was parked, because I took the cheap park-and-walk option like a chump. Finally got to my car, but by the time it was evening traffic, so it took me 45 minutes to get home.

I pull into the garage and am getting my bags out of the trunk, when my neighbor comes up with a cheery "hi!". Then she rails into me about how much she hates my dog barking, and that it's been 2 years of my dog barking, and I'm super inconsiderate because I don't bring him in after he barks twice, like she does with hers, and all the neighbors think the same. Also, she rents another house close by with tenants who work night shift and go to sleep at 2am, so my dog barking at 9am is also inconsiderate.

I was so fucking tired. This dumbass lady... I hadn't even been living here for two years. Her dog barks a ton, my dog sometimes replies to her dog barking. My dog barks but not for hours on end, just a normal amout before I get him in, which is a fucking miracle in itself because he's a great pyrenees. I've spoken to the neighbors, none of them think my dog barks too much, and how tf am I supposed to know you rent to night dwellers?? Tell them to get a fucking noise machine and put it on blast while they sleep, it's fucking 9am, there's a shit ton of noise everywhere. They're replacing the roof two houses down and start at 6, the day time is fucking loud. Also, lady, I haven't been home for a week. DO YOU SEE THE SUITCASE IVE PULLED OUT OF THE CAR??

What I said though is "thanks for letting me know, have a good day."

[-] elbarto777@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I went on "vacation" with my mom three times in the last two years. It was like tending to a small child. Constant care. Not fun. I decided I will only have vacations to myself for the next three years.

Also, wow. I hope you're having better days these days!

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

I cant even tolerate going to the store with mine.

She turns a 10 minute trip to grab milk and bread, into a 2 hour ordeal where I have to watch her like a hawk cause if I turn my back to her for .03 femtoseconds shes up and disappeared.

Had this really shitty day at work, last Friday of the year... my leg hurt (still don't know why, I think it's the footwear, but I'm not sure), had a lot of work that day (stayed overtime, not paid BTW). My wife calls me, says to pick up some things on my way home... OK. I walk home BTW, I live 30 minutes from where I work. I buy the stuff she asks... people from work start calling me, there's problem, they can't access some of the storages in the network... OK, I go back to work, walking on my busted leg, plus the stuff I got from the store. I get there, everything is working fine 😒... check the backbone switches, the storages, logs, it seemed like a glitch of some sort, a sync issue most probably. I start picking up my groceries and packing up to go home, shit happens again... OK, at least I'm not gone... it's 8PM by now. My wife calls me to ask me where I am, I say I'm at work, she hangs up 🤦... now I gotta explain why I'm still there. OK, go to the server room, the problem is gone by now, inspect the logs again, same thing... at this point, I'm this close to plugging everything out of the wall and plugging it back in again... to make sure I just yank a few cables and not every single piece of equipment in the rack (in case I decide to do this), I start inspecting how everything is connected, power cable wise. So, I pull out the backbone switches from the racks, one by one, and I start hearing this buzzing sound, like a bad electrical connection/plug... mhm, OK, I think we might be getting to the root of the problem, now let's see which one is it. I go to the back, start checking each plug on the back... everything seems OK... OK, so it's not the power plugs... at least not on the switch'es side. Something's still buzzing, so I try and pinpoint the sound. Seems to be coming from the lower part of the rack... darn, have to pull everything out to get in there. It's 10PM by now. So, I pull everything out and I notice 2 power cables not in plugs, but just connected with wires to another cable that goes into a plug. Why would they do that. Sure, they were insulated with tape, but why not just plug them in. Go in a bit further to hear if the sound is coming from there, move the cables a bit, the buzzing stops, but I hear coolers spinning down... OK, I pull myself out of there, go back to the front of the rack, sure enough, one of the backbone switches is down. As it turns out, they didn't have enough free plugs in the rack for all of the equipment, so instead of installing a new extension cord, they just cut 1 power cable, made a Y splitter for 2 of the switches and just plugged that cable in. Basically, there is no way of getting one of the switches offline, if you yank that thing out, 2 go offline. I pull out a few new power cables, get an extension cord from my office (we have a few laying around), plug those 2 the way they should be plugged, plug in the extension cord in the first empty power plug I could find in another rack, put the equpment back in the rack, leave the rack open cuz of the extension cord going to another rack and (finally!) leave work to go home, on my busted leg, with a shit ton of groceries... it's 11:30PM by now. I get home, get the 3rd degree for arriving so late on a Friday before NYE... I go to bed, my wife says she want's a backrub... I told her to suck it, left the bedroom and went to sleep in the living room.

[-] Kushan@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

That series of events really really sucks and I'm sorry that it all went wrong for you at the worst possible time.

I understand your wife could have been more understanding about the situation and put herself in your shoes to empathise more, but maybe it would be worth trying to see her perspective as well. It's not too late to make up and start 2024 on the right foot (no pun intended), with a little humility on both sides.

[-] 0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Yeah yeah, we had a conversation the next day... about half a day in, she was still pissed, so I waited. Still, we smoothed things out. She had no idea my leg hurt, I usually don't bother people with my problems (I may tell, but only if someone asks), so she had no idea how things went down... she just spew everything out that night and I couldn't even say a word. She said she was sorry, she could have handled it better, she was empathetic when I told her the whole thing... so, no harm no faul, we're good now ☺️.

[-] Kushan@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Glad you guys sorted it out! Hope you both have a great new year 😊

That kind of work / life balance will cost you your marriage and health, and you do not seem to realize how it impacts your life partner at all. How do you expect her to understand and support you when you don't let her in on your situation when she calls?

Yesterday I had a major "I am living in a movie and I'm the character everyone loves when bad things happens to them" vibes

Cause I woke up yesterday and a not insignificant chunk of my electonics were broken/nonfunctional.. Some of them werent even plugged in, so its not like it was a power issue or something.

They were all bought at different times, from different stores, and different brands. The only thread tying them all together (and this is where the movie character shit kicks in) is that all their warranties expired within like 2 weeks of eachother, Which means they all just fell out of warranty.

The Few replies from the various companies I've gotten so far can be basically summed up as "1 day out of warranty is still out of warranty, go fuck yourself"

It sounds so ridiculous that even I don't believe it, and I'm living it. Do they just put kill switches in stuff to make them die immediately after warranty now? Cause I sure as fuck feel like they do.

A colleague dropped about 450 kg of ready to use drywall filler from 6m height right before his shift ended and mine started. I spent about 8 hours just cleaning up the biggest blobs with a snow shovel, that's how much it was.

[-] Scarronline@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

This was maybe a month or two ago. I was woken up in the morning by my fiancée who told me I'd left the fridge open over night. When I logged onto work HR informed me the day of annual leave I had carried over was lost due to technical reasons (cut off to take was end of march, I took it first day of April due to work time prrssures. They have no flexibility on rules), then a major headache kicked up from a new keto diet I was on. Then to top it off, I was selling my car, and someone was coming round to look. As I loved it put from the driveway to viewing it sprang a massive oil leak, like 10 mins before they showed up. So they viewed it spewing oil everywhere, not exactly a solid selling point. Needless to say they didn't buy it.

All in one day. That was a shit day for sure.

I was visiting family for Thanksgiving. While we were watching the news, my father and his mother got into a massive argument over politics. It got so bad that I had to go upstairs and ride it out. It was an immensely stressful expirence for me, and I hope it never happens again.

All in the same day:

  • I was very sick and exhausted
  • My venue/the only practice space in the city announced it was shutting down
  • Batshit tweaker neighbor bugged out and forced my partner and I to barricade ourselves inside
  • Cops came and suggested we seek a restraining order
  • Half a bottle of coquito got spilled
