I'm just imagining this guy shrugging every time his wife talks to him πŸ˜†

Why use lot word when few do trick?

I really don't mind the appearance of either set, but I'm not a fan of the way that the new ones break in the dish washer. Ceramic shards are sharp and the mechanical repairs are expensive. Not to mention replacing the full set of these fragile bowls every 6 months.

Sincerely,

someone who purchased bowls 30 years ago and discovered that modern craftsmanship is subpar.

[–] MashedTech@lemmy.world 37 points 6 days ago (1 children)

THEY BREAK IN THE DISHWASHER?

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 18 points 6 days ago (1 children)

And the dust is fine enough to go through the dish washer filter. It's truly annoying

[–] MashedTech@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 29 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Where the hell are you buying bowls?

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 12 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

I think the set was from sears? I dunno, we're back to the old set until my partner finds another design worth swapping to.

Edit: it was target

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 12 points 6 days ago

Order a set of corelle and call it a day until you find the bougie set they want to keep in a cabinet while you keep eating off the corelle

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I'm concerned when you say the new ones were from Sears. Sears closed in 2005....

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They still have an online store

Edit: and also 5 physical stores, apparently. Neat

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

I mean, it's no longer "sears" though, if you get my meaning.

You're probably better off buying from Amazon or Temu at that point, but personally bowls from a quality store aren't too expensive anyways given how much use they'll typically get.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 10 points 6 days ago

Aiyaa.

I found that Corell dishware is still as good today as ot was 40 years ago. Excellent stuff, light and tough. But when it does break, it breaks hard.

Although it has been a while since I bought some.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

No longer married.

My favorite bowl is a flat green one with a chip and a crack. I bought a replacement for it in case it ever breaks in half. I have a second matching, but smaller bowl that also has a crack. They are the only two matching bowls, and she left them behind for me because I asked her to. Everything else is pieces I've had for various numbers of years, some going back over 40 years from when I first moved out on my own.

I absolutely love that nothing matches, and most of it is 20+ years old.

[–] CheesyFingers@piefed.social 14 points 5 days ago (4 children)

How to be a part of your partner's life:

darling, i never once considered whether or not i like these bowls because they serve the purpose i need them to. What do you not like about them?

I see what you mean, i suppose they are fairly bland and don't match our other dinnerware. It doesn't bother me even slightly, but I would love to investigate other options with you if you're planning to do so.

Yes, dearest, these new bowls are quite nice. I like how everything matches

OR EVEN

Honestly, peaches, i don't like how thin the new bowls feel, I'm afraid to use them because they feel delicate. I liked how robust the old ones wereβ€”i never had to worry. Does this concern you? We can always find other options.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This script feels incredibly stilted, it needs a rewrite with more feeling, needs to sound more like how humans speak not HR "people."

[–] CheesyFingers@piefed.social 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yes, i wrote it that way. It's not a script to be followedβ€”it's about the idea.

[–] redkid1324@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 days ago

Now I'm on my third set of bowls? Wtf am I made of money?

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Who do you think you are? My therapist?!?

hmm, if i would be saying that, i would be lieing, because i truly thoroughly do not give a crap about superficial stuff like what color the bowls are. and i don't appreciate lieing to my partner, so i'd rather just shrug.

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 25 points 6 days ago (3 children)

I am like this and I am not sure if I am broken or what. Shit staying the way it is is 100% fine for me - as long as it's practical, idc. But my partner needs to shake things up every once in a while or she feels bad. x_x

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I'm glad they're like that. My place was literally pic related until she showed up.

Place looks the same to me now, functionally, but also its a "home" too now, so thats nice.

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

Mine was post-soviet flat. It's still mostly is as we are poor as shit, but she rearranged furniture at least 5 times since she moved in xD

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

They like to put cute stuff on the walls, gives it more of a "home-y" feel.

[–] gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

you're not broken. don't let other people bully you into becoming superficial and caring about what color the curtains are. you just focus on the essential, that's fine.

I have ADHD and I need to change my environment occasionally to tame the ADHD demon. Maybe she does too.

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Possibly. She's defo on spectrum. Both diagnosed by the prof. S. Jonal (me) and actual profesionals. Fun to know it's tied to that.

Yay, normalized over-consumerism disguised as marital quirks!

The last bit especially, but like "the new bowls are better because you are happier with them"

I have very few strong opinions on anything, and it took a while for my wife to understand the difference between me giving a preference independent of hers vs including hers

The best example I can think of is olives. She loves olives, and I have absolutely no strong feelings about olives. So independent of her I would eat any olives that came with my dish, but when we're eating together I'll pick out the olives and give them to her because I get more joy secondhand when she has them than I would first-hand if I did

[–] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Sometimes the thing she wants requires effort though.

"Are you going to help me?"

Despite not once thinking about a perfectly fine room color being over a year old.

[–] Shameless@lemmy.world 14 points 6 days ago

In this case it's always better to just go along with it. Your partner will be happier, you will be happy that they are happy and overall they are likely right that changing the wall colour is a good idea. If you push back you are likely going to both end up unhappy, not to say you should always just roll over and do what your partner says, but when they ask if you are going to help, that's your opening to come up with another possible suggestion.

I get this. I have bowls that I don't like, but also I haven't seen any that I do seriously like enough to buy. In the grand scheme of things, it's a cheap way to make the spouse happy. Especially if they moved in and your already had the bowls. It lets them put their touch on their home.

A lot of things I have are functional, but never truly what I wanted. Maybe the size is just a bit off for how much I eat, or the way the bowl is shaped makes it slosh too much.

I think I have 3 or 4 sets of bowls now. Though I don't think I've paid for any. Some were left by the previous owner, others were a gift bought super cheap/used and were from the Disneyland hotel (I worked at Disney and we got access to buy what the company used in their restaurant for like $0.50/bowl), and another set my fiance brought when she moved in.

Otherwise I like to shop estate sales, garage sales, and thrift stores. I almost bought a set of retro 1950s bowls from a neighbors garage sale last month. Decided I didn't need another set though.

[–] varnia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

How to alienate your spouse in 2 steps by not caring? Strange internet humor...

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 9 points 6 days ago

I didn't read that into it. I read it as the person not particularly caring about the bowls, but caring that his wife is happy so in with the new bowls. I assume it's condensed and that the person is not just literally shrugging and not reacting otherwise, though.
