The current price of the RAM inside my PC is higher than the price I bought the whole PC for.
Same here. I had second thoughts about getting 128GB of DDR5 in my new rig in 2024. Thought I was being frivolous and foolish with my money. I mean, I was, but I've now got a rig that should carry me through another 10 years
My desktop has 96gb ddr5 and 8tb of nvme, my laptop has 96gb ddr5 and 4tb nvme, my nas has 128gb ddr4 and 16 used 20tb drives that I got for $200 each, my virtualization mini pc has 64gb ddr4.... I put excessive amounts of RAM and storage even on my routers. I feel like a silo/bunker owner in a post-apocalyptic movie.

I feel like a jackass. I built my son's PC with 32 GBs of RAM a couple years ago. My buddy built a new PC and gave me his old 32 GBs, which was the exact same brand and spec of the RAM in my son's PC.
I tried putting in the new RAM but got a boot error immediately. Rather than taking the time to troubleshoot properly and get it working, I just pulled it out and threw it away. I was like "meh, RAM is cheap and always getting cheaper. If I want to upgrade later, I'll just buy more."
Most ram has a lifetime warranty too lol
My 64GB I bought August 2025 for $180 (which I cried was high) is now over $1000.
At that point I'd sell it and buy a steam deck and a used laptop.
You must have a huge amount of willpower. I don't think I would resist the temptation of selling one of the DIMMs if I were in your shoes.

I remember buying a car in 2005 and considering if I should buy a hybrid or not. I did the calculations on how long it would take to break even upgrading to a hybrid - taking into account the price of gas at the time.
I remember thinking "yeah gas is $2 a gallon now, but there's NO WAY it stays that high over the life of the vehicle."
I don't care about gas tbh it can go higher we need to move away from it.

I put my pc together back in 2019 with the plan to upgrade individual parts over the next 5 years. Time rolls around to get a graphics card and they skyrocket. Time rolls around to extend the ram and they skyrocket. I'm so fucking pissed that this extremely reasonable and well thought out plan that I managed to make, one of very few that I managed to make before getting medicated, has been upended by forces that are both far beyond my control and also stupid.
I'm still running the base of my am4 system from 2017. Got some good value used parts for it (CPU&RAM).
But I don't see me upgrading to am5. I'll probably just wait for am6.

I priced it out and I could sell my RAM, buy an AR-15, and use the AR-15 to get more RAM.
yeah.. i bought a system a little bit less than two years ago, now one ssd broke. fortunately still within warranty... they reimbursed me the original price...

I rebuilt my entire setup less than a year before the spike. Also pre-ordered the Steam Deck. I regularly count my blessings with those. I realize just how lucky my timing really was.
There was a lot of 512GB OLED Decks that went up for sale in February 2026. I had previously planned to buy a refurb unit, but I had a sneaking suspicion they were going to announce a price hike soon, so I paid for a new unit at the $549 price. Not regretting that one. The price went up to $789 in May
Yeah I think it's time for another Skyrim playthrough, maybe I'll revamp the old PC for new stuff after the crash

I have the non rgb variant in ddr4 as a 32GB set I picked up a couple years ago from a Bin Store for like $6. :-\
31st of May 2025, I spent $500 on upgrading to a 7800x3d, which was the cost of the CPU and motherboard. The RAM was just thrown in with the motherboard (X870 AYM Gaming, not like it didn't make me buy an expensive board to get it, but still). That 32 GB 6000 CL36 RAM is now $500 just on its own.
I don't think I could have possibly gotten luckier on the timing of that purchase
