Police questioned him for 19 fucking hours over his personal recreational drug use — yet another victim of the war on drugs, created a century ago by conservatism to persecute minorities and the poor.

The police, the state, and Korean culture killed this man through bullying and harassment, because of what he chose to do with his own body — which should be nobody's business but his own.

A lot of people with mental health issues self-medicate with illegal drugs. This guy was probably suffering from depression, and the police pushed him too far. So ridiculous and tragic.

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 62 points 10 months ago

Seems like the dude was run through the media ringer for some weed and coke.

[-] mancy@lemmy.ca 62 points 10 months ago

Well he was also caught cheating on his wife with a prostitute which is a big deal in SK and especially so for someone like him that capitalized on his squeaky clean family man image.

Not saying it’s okay, but it’s not just the drugs.

To be fair coke and hookers go together better then love and marriage.

That's better than a horse and carriage.

You can't have one without the.... other.

I’ve met some pretty sexy horses before.

Some are sexier than others.

[-] StorminNorman@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

(they're quoting the Mr ed theme song)

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world -1 points 10 months ago

Why are you bringing up Mr. Ed when we’re taking about horses?

[-] StorminNorman@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

I didn't. Someone else did. And they likely did it cos Mr Ed is literally a horse you giant idiot...

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world -1 points 10 months ago

I’m actually quite short.

[-] ShepherdPie@midwest.social -1 points 10 months ago

hoes and carnage is more like it.

(Not against either but couldn't pass up the opportunity)

[-] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Oh that makes it make a little more sense

[-] jopepa@lemmy.world 22 points 10 months ago

I hope he’s relieved, at peace and his loved ones can recover theirs, too.

How severe are the drug laws in SK? A drug scandal pushing a celebrity to suicide feels surprising these days.

[-] BowtiesAreCool@lemmy.world 25 points 10 months ago

He smoked weed at someone’s house a few times this year and was under multiple hours long interrogations

[-] jopepa@lemmy.world 23 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Seems like he was starting to get black listed from Korean studios and sentencing for drug use/distribution is between 6 months and 14 years.

NY Post article I found about this and the Korean War on Drugs.

I've been following kpop for the better part of a decade. This isn't the first celebrity I know of with a drug scandal that pushes them to suicide or attempted suicide. I'm sure it won't be the last either. It's basically career suicide, even if it's just weed.

[-] chitak166@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Feels like kpop is meant just to appeal to the losers on 4chan.

Real big, "I jerk off to women then hate them for being in porn" vibes from that entire crowd.

[-] EssentialCoffee@midwest.social -1 points 10 months ago

That's a very limited view on a genre of music.

[-] chitak166@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago

Not really, considering the audience cares more about their idol's personal lives than the music they make.

[-] EssentialCoffee@midwest.social -1 points 10 months ago

Yeah, as I said, you have a very limited view on that genre of music and you're really proving that now. Like any type of music, people are into it for a number of reasons.

[-] chitak166@lemmy.world -3 points 10 months ago

I assume you're a fan of kpop?

[-] EssentialCoffee@midwest.social 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I figured that came through in the "I've been following kpop for the better part of a decade" comment that you originally replied to, but since it wasn't clear enough, yes, I'm a fan of kpop and know many fans of kpop who aren't 4chan people at all, and many who don't care about idol lives or the papparazzi pictures. (Yes, obviously there are 4chan folks who like kpop, like you can find 4chan folks who like any genre of music).

Kpop, like the majority of pop, is typically marketed to young women because women spend money on products or tend to have more decision making power over where money is spent (obviously varies by person or household). 4chan is usually not a haven for young women, or any women for that matter.

Like the majority of music genres, the fans are diverse and are interested in it for a variety of different reasons. If the only people that you're finding who listen to kpop are 4chan folks, I think that says more about the folks that you associate with or the places that you frequent than it does about kpop fans.

By 'that crowd' do you mean conservative countries in South East Asia?

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

The way I read this, the suicide looks unrelated to the drug allegations? The guy who ended up taking his own life tested negative for drugs, while everyone else in the story is in trouble. Really weird article. Did they just mash all that stuff together in the same article to get enough length?

[-] KinNectar@kbin.run 3 points 10 months ago

Once again forgetting to use quotation marks around movie titles delivers a memorable and misconstrued headline.
