Reading Homer this summer and it's crazy how misogynist it is. Achilles' wrath is from his slave woman being taken from him, and she later laments Patroclus' death because after Achilles killed her whole family, he didn't let her cry. Helen often calls herself a whore for being taken by Paris. Agememnon is killed by his wife and when Odysseus meets him in Hades, he says that because of this treachery, all women are forever evil and can never be trusted again. And yeah they just be making slaves of women after sacking cities and slaughtering everyone else.
Nuts how much of it has its origin in misogny though
Yesterday I was reading the wikipedia page on Georgian pagan myths and according to that their foundational creation myth is basically "god made all the lesser gods, everything good, and men, and HIS SISTER did the exact opposite" and like eventually the lesser gods drove the demons to the underworld and they just like, left women (evil, btw) behind

Well, you have to remember too that this narrative survived because it benefited the status quo. I think it is very important to remember that even the Ancient Greeks at one point were not as bad as the depictions, because it benefited the tyrants for it to have always been this way you know? If you dig deep enough, almost every "evil goddess" type character was at one point a highly significant figure in a different group but was overtaken, and their goddess turned evil to change the masses. AKA Catholic's were not the first.

Anyway I love history for this reason, it is fascinating to see all their weird ideas and wonder why they developed them.
Also it's just a really fun read, I expected it to be dry as hell but these guys are funny (or at least Plato is lol). They got jokes.
I was really surprised by how funny and actually pretty relatable a lot of the humor was in the Greek comedies I had to read in college. Aristophanes especially is the one I remember enjoying the most
There is a joke that is like General Ancient Greek "You are gay because you love men. I am gay because we hate women, we are not the same"
There are two symposiums, Plato and Xenophon, and one of the big changes is whether Sparta is cool for being gay or Sparta is cool for not being gay.
