[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 1 points 12 hours ago

Same with Fishfighter, sounds much closer to the truth, and I can't stop imagining a person wrestling with a large tuna or catfish in a shallow water

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 39 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

This is the most boring d&d party. How about:

  • firefighter
  • policerogue
  • mailcleric
  • fisherranger

I know this is a joke but I will be pendantic and say there is already a gender neutral word for fisherman, which is fishmonger.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

It's sad, the few things one can monger.

War, fish, rumors, cheese, fear, and whores, not much else to be a mongerer-of :(

[–] Rusty@lemmy.ca 4 points 12 hours ago

Fisherman - Fishmonger Mailman - Mailmonger Policeman - Policemonger Fireman - Firemonger

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I thought a fishmonger was someone who sells fish at market, not the person who catches them.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Firefighter, pig, courier, fisher

[–] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago

Fishfighter, not fisherfighter. No idea why, just sounds better.

Otherwise no notes

If somebody told me this was how German worked I would believe it so I wonder if the reverse is true

[–] affenlehrer@feddit.org 7 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

This does not work in German because fighter (Kämpfer) is gendered as male. There's is female version of it though (Kämpferin). We have Feuerwehrmann and Feuerwehrfrau. Correct gendering in German is (I say that as an older a male) a bit complicated and makes the sentences usually mich longer or sound weird.

There was a joke solution to this that I really liked: add a "y" to the end or all gendered words: Feuerwehry, Frisöry, Mitarbeity, Erziehery, Arzty etc.

Monster or Ungeheuer would work too. Feuerwehrmonster.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Degendering ala Phettberg may have started as a humours way toward gender neutral language, but it evolved IMHO into a serious way next to *, :, Innen.

[–] affenlehrer@feddit.org 1 points 19 hours ago

I wasn't aware but I like it. Makes everything sound cute.

[–] dan@upvote.au 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

In frontend development, it's pretty common to use German to stress test UIs, as it's a commonly used language with a lot of long words. It reveals all sorts of UI issues - text that doesn't wrap properly, buttons that are pushed off the screen, etc.

I don't know German, but I do like the idea of using compound nouns rather than inventing new words.

It's also common to test UIs with Arabic, to test handling of right-to-left languages. At work we have a "fake RTL" language that's English but rendered RTL. It's interesting because everything is flipped - for example, a left-hand sidebar is instead on the right side in RTL languages. Company logo is at top right instead of top left.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

You will be happy to know I have confirmed your identity as a Non-Israeli.

[–] dan@upvote.au 1 points 16 hours ago

Because I used Arabic as an example rather than Hebrew? Or because I'm unfamiliar with RTL languages?

In any case, it's pretty easy to figure out that I'm Aussie :)
