Update

Dev is also upset at people who did not like their previous post and continues to insult everyone on the fediverse who does not a reddit like experience to attract investors (ie what the dev calls normies). As well as being completely unapologetic while also still attacking trans friendly instances by calling them a box of matches.

https://lemmy.world/post/49887929

You all have made it quite clear that you don’t want an explanation, or even a mea culpla, or to even try to understand the very real problem I’m trying to address for people who want a nicer place in the thrediverse.

You just want a punching bag.

Maybe when the DM harassment and death threats stop and someone wants to come in with a specific good faith question instead of a shotgun to my face, we’ll talk. Until then, fuck off.

Warmest regards,

Pat

But here’s an explainer for the communities:

I’ve already addressed users and such in the previous post, but I will cover communities here.

In short, think of those communities as a box of matches. In the right hands they’re perfectly safe and useful.

In the hands of a petulant child or batshit crazy adult, they’re dangerous and highly flammable.

Given that the average level of maturity of the loudest people here falls somewhere between “petulant child” and “batshit crazy adult”, giving them a box of matches is a very. bad. idea.

Some of those communities are also completely unmoderated.

I ain't reading all that. Free Palestine.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 59 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

This is the deranged ranting of a person who thinks they are a James Bond villain going off on a monologue.

The dude is trying to run a game of becoming a widely used piece of technology indispensable to the ecosystem and then using that position to impose a default experience on the entire thing that shuts out whatever he sees fit to shut out. His goal is literally positioning himself in the position of reddit Admin.

This is literally the reason everyone left reddit and started using decentralised software, and his goal is to re-centralise everything behind his software under the guise of "toxic" filters.

This is an op. I know this is an op because game knows game and I've run a few ops in my time.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 55 points 1 month ago (6 children)

Just don't hard code your personal grievances into your software. How fucking hard can that be? The diehard tankie communists of Lemmy managed to do that. All of those values could've been loaded from a config file. But instead he writes "I hate these users in particular" into his git history and gets upset when those users call him out for doing it.

All these fediverse libs exist in the highest form of liberal paternalism.

That's what it was doing, basically. It was quietly making API calls to retrieve its secret censor list from a server its dev had. It went undetected until someone (db0?) went poking around and mimicked those API calls to get a copy of what exactly it was retrieving.

And might I add that not one person complained until db0 went internet Karen with his hissy fit because I took his toy away from him. I’d warned him several times over the last couple of years that his instance was becoming problematic, and when it reached a point I no longer wanted it associated with me or my project, I exercised my rights to disassociate.

The most scooby doo villain vibes of the whole post

"And I Would Have Gotten Away With It Too, If It Weren't For You Meddling Kids"

[–] Runcible@hexbear.net 51 points 1 month ago

it's such a disingenuous argument. "Nobody cared until they found out"

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 33 points 1 month ago (11 children)

All anyone should take away from the post is the dev is an absolute horrible person who can only tolerate conservative ideals.... While being a massive star trek fan.

I'll bet he just likes the Cardassians. While wishing he were as smooth as Riker.

Letting the users of the whole Fediverse decide for themselves if they want to engage with certain instances would've been the better choice. But why choose the easy way when you can piss everyone off and then play the victim?

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 43 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I'm completely clueless about who this is and why they're crashing out. I didn't even know any of this existed until the slop skimmers delivered it to our trough a day or two ago

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Just the dev of an apparently popular front end who like some others keeps saying they're done with the fediverse and leaving but don't

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

i'm guessing its at least popular with deebo and the dot.welt nerds since they're like the only two places i've seen talk about it so far, anyways all i've come from this thus far is this person is a nerd and a loser.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago (2 children)

deebo and the dot.welt nerds

did I take a wrong turn and walk into the Star Wars cantina

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago

lmao reading db0 as "deebo" is hilarious

  1. Advocacy of, incitement of, or ANY calls to violence.

This only ever applies to leftists or people in the global south. Argue in favor of invading Iran? Support Israel? Support banning abortion? Want to make homelessness a crime? These are all totally neutral opinions that totally don't involve the use of violence.

Say "It's really funny Charlie Kirk got clipped after he stated a few gun deaths (resulting from rightwing terrorists shooting up an elementary school) each year is the price of freedom" and it's "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THE HEXBEANIS ADVOCATES VIOLENCE!!!!!"

  1. Racism, Xenophobia, Transphobia, Homophobia, Bigotry, et al

Fucking coward lmaoooo

Foxes and wolves...it's always foxes and wolves.

Umm those are all self-defense smuglord

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 38 points 1 month ago

Does that leave blind spots for mods and admins?

A: No. The filtering is disarmed completely for admins and for mods in their communities.

Well then, now you know why it went by undetected for so long.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Tesseract is an experience more than a client

I'm not reading the rest of that.

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

The Tesseract experience is just reddit, except he's the basement dwelling power tripping mod and not the current basement dwelling power tripping mod. That'll show those communists.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 34 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Dude basically made a list of active fediverse leftists. Looking at it, its basically a list of just active users.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago

Its a list of cool and great posters if you think about it

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 23 points 1 month ago

It's honestly anyone that made a comment they didn't like, pushed back on something the dev said or just simply the dev was having a bad day and added people to the list

[–] Chana@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago (8 children)

Everyone not on that list is a liberal now

[–] WittyProfileName2@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

To be blunt: Tesseract is designed to attract and retain normies. The Fediverse is stuck in a bit of a chicken and egg situation right now. It needs new people, but anyone in their right mind isn’t going to want to stick around because the loudest bunch here are just so off-putting to normal, well-adjusted people. I’ve attempted to resolve this catch-22 situation and am trying, perhaps hamfistedly, to save the Fediverse from itself.

I gotta ask who these mysterious level headed normies who'd be driven away by the fediverse community are given some of the things that list blocks. Like, for example one of the blocked communities is called "Wholesome Yuri". Who's being scared away by lesbians? and why would they be a better, less toxic community than the fediverse's existing one?

Probably because hexbear and .ml are covered by the instance ban so there was no need specifying the users

My alt is in the blacklist so you nerds should have posted harder catgirl-smug

Tldr? I'm too old

edit: asked a chinese llm to summarize this in one sentence from a communist perspective

TL;DR: An individual platform owner exercises bourgeois censorship by unilaterally deciding what speech is acceptable while claiming to protect "normies," revealing how digital feudalism allows private owners to control discourse in the name of community safety.

and then it degrades from there usually ending with them calling the other person a Nazi

Funny coincidence how people who get called Nazis a lot are usually Nazis.

The CIA is still not bringing their best to embrace-extend-extinguish Lemmy

[–] JakenVeina@midwest.social 25 points 1 month ago

To disable them (referred to as enabling Toxic Mode in the settings), it’s as simple as:

Settings -> Advanced -> Click the "I feel like some content is missing. What's up?" text at the bottom -> Enable Toxic Mode

Didn't the admin's investigation show that "Toxic Mode" specifically DOESN'T disable the secret hidden filtering?

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

When I ran vegan theory club instance I said something he didn't like and he want ballistic on me calling me out for being anti-American and "extremist" while the country he lives in was preparing to bomb the country where I'm from. He then went on to the fediseer and censured my instance because if he doesn't like something it is a problem. This is an actual problem with the fediverse, the "call outs" and harassment communities that pick out people for wrong think.

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago

People on the internet sometimes tell lies or other forms of untrue statements. Some people, primarily in Western civilizations, think of this as “bad”. However, in certain other places - Russia, China, North Korea, etc. - being able to trick someone or manipulate them into doing what you want is extremely often considered “good” and even a form of highly adaptive behavioral intelligence, aka cunning.

Those of us in Western civilizations look at this and remember when we grew out of it in our childhoods, having been taught differently. However, around the world, such behavior is encouraged rather than frowned upon.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (4 children)

So you equated China and Russia to the very clear genocide being committed by the US and Israel? You deserved it and your bullying is tantamount to genocide denial you ducking deserved the ban..
