Update

Dev is also upset at people who did not like their previous post and continues to insult everyone on the fediverse who does not a reddit like experience to attract investors (ie what the dev calls normies). As well as being completely unapologetic while also still attacking trans friendly instances by calling them a box of matches.

You all have made it quite clear that you don’t want an explanation, or even a mea culpla, or to even try to understand the very real problem I’m trying to address for people who want a nicer place in the thrediverse.

You just want a punching bag.

Maybe when the DM harassment and death threats stop and someone wants to come in with a specific good faith question instead of a shotgun to my face, we’ll talk. Until then, fuck off.

Warmest regards,

Pat

But here’s an explainer for the communities:

I’ve already addressed users and such in the previous post, but I will cover communities here.

In short, think of those communities as a box of matches. In the right hands they’re perfectly safe and useful.

In the hands of a petulant child or batshit crazy adult, they’re dangerous and highly flammable.

Given that the average level of maturity of the loudest people here falls somewhere between “petulant child” and “batshit crazy adult”, giving them a box of matches is a very. bad. idea.

Some of those communities are also completely unmoderated.

Just don't hard code your personal grievances into your software. How fucking hard can that be? The diehard tankie communists of Lemmy managed to do that. All of those values could've been loaded from a config file. But instead he writes "I hate these users in particular" into his git history and gets upset when those users call him out for doing it.

All these fediverse libs exist in the highest form of liberal paternalism.

That's what it was doing, basically. It was quietly making API calls to retrieve its secret censor list from a server its dev had. It went undetected until someone (db0?) went poking around and mimicked those API calls to get a copy of what exactly it was retrieving.

[–] ZWQbpkzl@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Nope it was doing both. There were multiple types of block lists in the source code and then there was and additional API call to get even more up to date user block lists. Since the API call was to a block list he personally maintained it's just hard coding with more steps.

I mean technically.they hardcoded a slur filter (ofc there's nothing wrong with a grievance against slurs but just saying)

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The slur filter hasn't been hard-coded in years. They made it so admins define a list of slur regexes through the UI instead.

True, I'm just being annoying, it hardly matters anyway

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 1 month ago

Sadly doesn't stop some users saying that's even worse than this or anything piefed does

[–] ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 month ago

It's not hardcoded anymore
