Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

Assata Shakur, born on this day in 1947, is a revolutionary socialist and former member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA) who became the first woman to be added to the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list in 2013.

spoiler

Shakur grew up in New York City and Wilmington, North Carolina. She became involved in political activism at Borough of Manhattan Community College and City College of New York, participating in sit-ins and civil rights protests.

After graduating from college, Shakur briefly joined the Black Panther Party, leading its Harlem chapter. She left the Panthers and joined the Black Liberation Army, a black power group that was inspired by the Viet Cong and Algerian resistance movements and waged guerrilla warfare against the U.S. government from 1970 to 1981. Shakur was one of the targets of the FBI's COINTELPRO program.

After being involved in a shootout with New Jersey police officers, Shakur was convicted on multiple counts of assault and murder and sentenced to life in prison. In 1979, BLA members freed her in a bloodless prison escape.

Shakur successfully sought political asylum in Cuba, where she died on September 25, 2025, at the age of 78

Bruh I'm so tired... I got through that whole workday with very little sleep, but hey, I managed. Thankfully, I know that I"m gonna sleep extra good tonight. Haha.

I actually had the biggest smile for the rest of my shift I swear because honestly I really like her so I can't stop thinking about her, even when I'm so fucking tired and stuck at a spot for like 8 hours

I know that's corny but it's true

[–] filipinokilla@hexbear.net 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

do you ever watch western entertainment media and see yourself in its villains? i actually kinda like it

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 1 points 22 minutes ago

villain launches into monologue about how imperialism is bad

Uh this is supposed to be the bad guy?

nukes an orphanage to let you know they’re evil and imperialism is good actually

Oh

First day of work went pretty well! It was just some basic training and introductory shit. There are actually quite a lot of melanated people on the team, and the trainer herself is a Black woman with locs. Definitely good because I was already super guarded and prepared to fight any microaggressions if they were to happen. It'll take a while before my body and mind readjust to this whole "8 hours a day, 5 days a week" type shit... but I'll sure get used to it. The job doesn't seem like it'll be hard, and it beats unemployment. That's for a fucking fact.

white ameriKKKan weSStern european nato stan zio neoliberal queer furry bumper stickers all over a car, looks like ass. might not be easy on the eyes!

Y'know, I found this post and everyone in the comments is making jokes about how this looks like juxtaposition, saying corny shit like, "OMG! I can't even tell what side bro is on! Isn't that outrageous?! 😭😭😭"

But, to anyone with a modicum of political awareness, based off of how I've observed it, unless I'm missing something, nothing here looks out of the ordinary for your average white queer liberal in the West. This is basically just neoliberalism, especially of the pinkwashed variety. Not some contradictory "My political ideology is impossible to decipher" type shit.

These random flags make no sense to be together, this is impossible to decipher!!!!

Since Ziohran dropped his “I lied UwU” video, he’s vowed to arrest Hamas leaders, AYE-COOOOOOOOONDEMN-ed 10/7 (again), and publicly mourned the death of a child-killing war criminal

I’ve noticed that it’s been all quiet on the Copdani front on HB recently. I guess we’re at the “umm why do you care so much about him?” stage of sophistry.

Can’t wait for all the crackers on here to fall head over heels for the next AOC clone!

nothing will change with this site until it reckons with its liberal zionism. the same with platner and piker and its yankee chauvinism.

Mamdani is brown/muslim people's Contrapoint or Obama, a lot of the followers are/were former bigots who were compensating and were willing to overlook many red flags just to avoid being seen as bigots or having bigots agree with them.

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I swear that I kept feeling like I was being gaslit by all these Mamdani-glazing "leftists." Like, I was just thinking to myself, "There's no way you guys actually back this guy. Am I missing something? What the fuck?"

I really think people need to realize that this DSA left" they're so fond of is just another wing of the Democrat Party, i.e., liberals. It's amazing how many self-proclaimed Marxists kept earning fell-for-it-again-awards when it comes to this subject.

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

Zohran is a goofy ass clown for pretending he ever had the power to arrest Bibi and giving life to a ridiculous larp, but he did not "vow to arrest Hamas leaders" at least not the way you're describing it

He was responding to a rancid zionist "journalist" pulling a whatabout and asking if he would arrest Hamas and understandably instead of larping, inviting legal censure and screaming "Glory to Hamas!" he deflected by pointing out the ICC also has warrants out for Hamas leaders, thereby deflating what is in fact a dangerous legal smear for a Brown Muslim man in America and exposing the hypocrisy of the zionist ghoul who asked that question

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I've been connecting very well with a wonderful queer Black leftist.

Something about her... I don't know what it is, but something about her is making me catch feelings quick.

I gotta be careful. I'm really passionate and prone to being a "simp," but I've been better at regulating these tendencies lately.

Things are going well. I'm just gonna continue talking with her and seeing where things go. My main focus is just handling this job, which I'm hella nervous about, but I know that, with time, it'll stop giving me so much anxiety. After I get my first paycheck, I'm gonna purchase a decent but not overly expensive USB mic and audition for doing audiobooks as a side hustle.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

heart-sickle wishing you the best comrade!

[–] Rindogang@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

Today I was talking to a trans woman and quickly realized she's still aiming for white supremacy... it honestly felt like a cold wind hitting me when she talked. She was complaining about why people won't just leave her alone, completely ignoring that she's playing for the side that literally hates her

Like don't you know you're trans? Don't you know you're from the Global South and getting exploited? You're trying to be just like your oppressors, hoping they'll accept you while they push everyone else down the hierarchy. It's such a disgrace. I hate feeling like this. I hate feeling so alone and I hate being able to see right through her facade

I got hired by this place, and my training with them starts on Monday. It's also remote, so hopefully, nothing weird about "load tests" steps into the room. I don't think it will. I already completed my onboarding with them, and the training will last a month. It is a full-time position and actually long-term. I love that I don't have to leave my home to do the work, so it sounds like a win.

However, I got some anxiety when I read these policies on having a "professional appearance" for video conferences:

  • Hair must be clean and well-groomed in a reasonable style.
  • No hats or head-coverings that impede a clear view of your face. Scarves and hair-wraps are fine so long as they do not violate another policy (obscene patterns, etc.)

Because I have freeform dreadlocks, I probably don't fit this "well-groomed" or "reasonable style" description they're talking about. After reading this, I actually decided to wear a (solid black) Rastacap during the interview, and they took no issue with it, so I take it that the Rastacap is not invalidated by the second bullet point there. I guess one could call it a "hair-wrap." Regardless, it is such a goofy, performative, and LARPy thing for them to have these stringent guidelines on one's appearance in video calls for a job where you're not actually even seeing customers, just talking to them on the phone.

Either way, if they do try to go after me for either the Rastacap or the freeform dreadlocks, that can be a violation of anti-discrimination laws, I'm sure. Though I'm not actually a Rasta, I thought it might be in my favor to cap (pun definitely intended) and tell them that I am so they get off my ass for the sake of avoiding religious discrimination. I don't think it will actually get to that point, though.

In addition to this, I am looking into narrating audiobooks as a side hustle of sorts. Unfortunately, because of AI, I wonder how long this will even be an option. Either way, I'm gonna navigate finding some side hustle.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

CROWN laws vary by state/municipality. 27 states have hair protection laws, with 40 cities/counties having laws regardless of what the state has (North Carolina has a lot of the latter). AFAIK there are lawyers doing work pro bono in states without to try and get the laws changed.

Damn I wonder when all the (cracker) Copdani stans here will have to say about him admitting he can’t arrest Netanyahu. I wonder how they will reconcile this with their previous drooling over this major campaign promise. Oh wow, more “he never said that” gaslighting and lying. What a surprise!

Also, won’t do anything about the illegal land sales but is happy to create speech restriction zones around where they’re being conducted and sicc the cops on protestors.

Actions speak louder than words

Can’t wait for the next wave of “ummmm why do you care so much about the NYC mayor sweaty????” since they have no actual counterargument

They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

[–] Rojo27@hexbear.net 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Honestly putting out that statement that he can't arrest Netanyahu was a ridiculous stunt. And I honestly don't even really care all that much, for the most part. Its the fact that, as you pointed out, created that buffer zone for protests against the sale of stolen land. Not only that, early on he kept on feeding into the growing "antisemitism" narrative. And after all this time he still has Zionists down his neck. Every news story I saw on his nothing burger statement had interviews with a bunch of malding Zionists.

Also it shouldn't go without saying, but it also feeds into the growing mainstream Democrat narrative that Netanyahu is the entire problem and not the entity itself.

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

Give the average cracker “leftist” their bike lanes and healthcare and they will go “fuck you I got mine”, their only problem with throwing Palestinians under the bus is if the bus costs money to ride.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I love how you just know a white queer got mad they got called out for being racist with the og meme and had to make up a random black person to be mad about lmao always white before anything else

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is why I always say my Blackness comes before my queerness.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Never met a poc who said anything came before their race tbh regardless of politics.

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

It's rare, but unfortunately, I've seen social media slop where this kind of shit happens, such as Black women saying "I am a woman before I am a Black." In an overwhelming majority of cases, these are the cringy, self-hating divestor types, though, so they're not really commonplace.

[–] puppygirlpets@hexbear.net 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Shakur successfully sought political asylum in Cuba, where she still lives today.

fam, she died last year

So I was able to get my HRT (and other meds) totally covered this time around. Thank fuck! It's been raining a shitload so they said they were willing to deliver it for me.

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

FFS, the org that typically covers my HRT is changing their policies. I used to be able to get it completely free but that might not be the case. I emailed them, as they say they're willing to make "special exceptions" sometimes. Wish me luck.

This wasn't the first time something liked this happened... it was totally free for me at one point, and then they changed that. And then it became free again. And now they're changing it again. So suddenly, too.

Saw this happen way too many times, Also applies to friend groups and families

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

How it feels to interact with white queers.

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago (4 children)

and ppl (whites) here on hexbear tried to tell me I actually wasn't seeing "clanker" used against black people as a "funny" stand-in for slurs

"it's just a star wars thing", "it's just used against AI bros" i-love-not-thinking

90% of the clanker memes were racist, their entire punchlines were dogwhistles about black people.

The performance is definitely broken lol very inconsistent, game optimization doesn't exist anymore even the new Halo 1 remake is so blurry I can't get headshots consistently lol, just aiming at smeared blobs

[–] filipinokilla@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

i still play halo 3 on steam. fps games are literally full of chuds but i still play anyway cat-com but yeah optimization is dead. i recently got a rtx 3060 as a hand me down from a friend who upgraded, and i'm still playing decade old multiplayer games

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That game have a hard-core mode? ._.

[–] razgriz@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It has Ranked and Cryo Archive as the hard-core modes, then free-kit PvP and Rook, experimental PvE Cryo Archive (for 2 weeks starting today, then a permanent PvE mode next month-ish) as the less stressful ways of playing

Losing your inventory when you die definitely makes the game feel hard-core all the time, but after playing for a while and upgrading factions and vault size I realized the game kind of showers you in loot and the gear tiers differences aren't that big so it's not a huge deal when you do die. the stakes are mostly just there to promote learning and to create a pretty unique gameplay style for a shooter with lots of strategic thinking and planning

comfy
