I took it so seriously as a young teen but I am rewatching it as an adult with my partner and this is one of the funniest animes I have watched. Would recommend a rewatch to anyone who hasn't seen it since they were a kid. Completely different vibes, the dub is great as well.

The realization that Light is

a) a total goober
b) a total fascist
c) capable of fumbling the most easily held bag of all time

changed my reading quite a bit. There are so many scenes where he is totally locked in, making something completely meaningless into a Titanic struggle of intellect, while L or whoever else is just doing their job normally. The potato chip scene is one of them.

I EAT A POTATO CHIP!!!

"What if there was a magic book you could use to alter the course of global politics to your whim, but it was picked up by a gay Republican so he just kills people who are already in prison"

Also he's a genius who never stops to wonder if a substancial amount of crime is an emergent phenomenon derived from structural failures in politics or the economy. In fact he gives the magical notebook to some corrupt FinanceBro and let's him use it on corporate enemies as long as he uses it to mass 86 the poors.

Is that a quote? It's kind of perfect

IDK but most Death Note parodies I've seen, if they get political, make Light into a gamer or conservative anti-woke of some kind lol. And they might make the Yagami-spelled-backwards joke.

The best part of it is the Roadrunner/Coyote ass hijinx mindgames between Light and L. Like one could imagine a scene where L paints a fake tunnel on a wall and tries to convince Light to run into it, until Light psyches himself out into running face first into the wall to somehow prove he's not Kira.

"This is your king?" Me after watching the series for the first time as an adult.

Oh I got to rewatch it like that sometime, I also took it very seriously when I watched it as a kid. The video of Light and L talking without internal monologues is hilarious lmao

Browsing the imdb forums for it (also as a young teen) was maybe the first time I was truly horrified by posts. A seemingly major chunk of the fanbase was so toxic and creepy I immediately stopped watching and never engaged with any version of it again

Honestly so fair. I am forever grateful that teenage me never got into an anime fandom despite watching plenty of anime

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 week ago

the best thing to come out of the show was the L and Light accidentaly forcefemming each other meme on tumblr

It's giving full telenovela vibes. No wonder I liked it so much growing up.

Oh thank god. I watched it later in life and did not get what the hype was. Though this was when I still didn't understand that I was a leftist or even what that was. "This light guy really needs to chill out."

My entire context of this show comes from this single Youtube video: https://youtu.be/9hEHOaZYEeE

I tried watching it for the first time as an adult and turned it off partway through the first episode. It was just ridiculous with its dialog. I thought the live-action Japanese film was okay, though.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago

The ridiculousness is exactly the appeal for me rn lol
