Nato leaders have informally agreed not to mention the football World Cup to Donald Trump for fear of irritating the US president at a crucial time for the military alliance.

Further below...

In the first open acknowledgment of the strategy, the Belgian prime minister, Bart De Wever, told reporters in Ankara he would not be discussing his country’s 4-1 win over the US earlier this week.

Look, can everyone please do their best not to annoy the bumbling pedophile? Thank you - your cooperation is appreciated.

If they irritate him it might raise his blood pressure and that's bad for someone so fucking old. Do it

[–] fraksken@infosec.pub 11 points 1 month ago

Do it. Do it. Do it!

There's no way he isn't on blood pressure medication, maybe 2 or 3 different ones.

And they won't mention 12 year old girls as that might get him too excited.

[–] Kintarian@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago (6 children)

Why are all the world's leaders kissing his ass? Why doesn't anyone have the balls to tell him no, he's an idiot?

He is the commander-in-chief of the world's most advanced military and second largest nuclear stockpile on Earth. Despite the United States' economic woes, he also wields great influence over a massive trade partner with the EU.

Until the Europeans can successfully deleverage most of their integration with the United States military and economy, the pragmatic thing to do is only pick fights where it's absolutely necessary.

Personally, for what it's worth, I wouldn't want to cede one millimeter of proverbial ground to what is clearly the worst president of all time. However, I understand the tactical decision being made.

Nuclear bombs.

Endless military bases sprinkled around Europe.

The capability for dealing economic damage.

A cabinet of sycophants.

A cult-like following.

[–] matlag@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Why antagonize him while it's much easier to appeal to him and make him sign stupid deals in your favor he wil call victories?

[–] Zizzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 1 month ago (7 children)

As enticing as that sounds, youre seriously putting peoples lives at risk to do so.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

the world has to learn to do without the US sooner or later. might as well be sooner.

if they're planning on that, then I agree with the play. if they're not planning on that and want to continue with the US in as big a role as previously, then fuck 'em.

of course, I don't know which it is. but it's obviously the right play to make meaningless moves to appease him.

Stop placating the old bitch

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 10 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Some recent reports claimed EU needs about 10 years to become militarily independent from USA. Some other reports claim that Russia is planning on testing NATO in the near future. Most countries realize now they can't rely on USA anymore but not talking about football is small price to pay for keeping the alliance together a little big longer.

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 5 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Here's the thing, barring a nuclear weapon I think Poland or Finland all by themselves could take Russia and there's no one else really threatening Europe at the moment.

Trump also doesn't respect placation, it just invites him to go harder. What he does respect is popularity and violence. He's cool with Mamdani because the mayor is popular, he's deferential to Putin because Putin projects violence.

Whiny bitch

[–] Mediocre_Bard_Redeux@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

Because he's a special baby snowflake.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

When babies cry and whine it is very annoying and just disrupts productivity. Therefore people will often alter their behavior when around them to ensure a quiet and productive atmosphere.

[–] ContactClosure@lemmus.org 8 points 1 month ago

Cowards. They should have a giant poster of Stormy with the Belgian team on the wall.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

What a crybaby

[–] Asetru@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago (6 children)

Isn't it lovely how headlines are about sports while Europeans are seemingly still committing to the goal of spending five fucking percent of their gdp for their military? Schools, hospitals, universities, railways... all that will suffer for tanks and the headlines are still just about how somebody doesn't mention that ludicrous display last night to some jerk.

[–] Filip785@fedia.io 16 points 1 month ago

While it sucks, Europe has to do it. It's not threatened just by Russia anymore, but by US itself these days

Drumpf is literally every other day threatening to invade Denmark, an EU member for no reason whatsoever. It's quite insane

Also, you never know who Americans could elect next time, or time after that. Maybe someone even more unhinged.

Europe must be able to defend itself

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Working towards 5% isn't really that stupid for most European countries as long as Russia is spending as much money as it can on weapons. It will only become a waste of money after the implosion of the Russian oligarchy. I am not in favor of spending that much money of things that kill stuff, but it makes total sense to continue doing that for now.

[–] Major_Tsiom@fedia.io 5 points 1 month ago (3 children)

No, you need to be able to defend against the United States. They are the biggest world threat right now. The leadership is incompetent, but they have an overwhelming advantage in firepower and are very dangerous.

Why kid gloves with this dumb fucker? Tell him to go pound sand and shove more hamberders down his nasty gullet. You'll do the world a favor.

Oh no he'll call you childish names, shit his diapers, and write drug-fueled unhinged tweets at three in the morning. The tariffs will be on us, the citizens of this shithole, not you. The sooner y'all grow spines the better. Never EVER cave to bullies.

Pedro Sánchez, Spanish PM, said he had an informal conversation with Trump about soccer and the World Cup.

https://xcancel.com/clashreport/status/2074869832990740508

Trump knows nothing about soccer, so it should have looked like an elevator talk.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 4 points 1 month ago

Pedro Sanchez claimed Wold Cup was the only thing he discussed with Trump. Is that's what pissed Trump so much? :D

[–] CAVOK@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think they should be subtle about it.

"Do you want a soda Mr Trump? I have 1-4 you here".
