Came here a couple months ago. Regular Reddit lurker. Trying to get the swing of things. Seems like decent community. Just jumping in and engaging this time.

An easy way to get started is replying ":3" when you see the chance.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago

There, you made the first step. Don't worry, most people don't bite.

Let's break the ice

Every little bit of engagement helps Lemmy grow, so welcome!

Here’s your complementary Lemmy starter gift tote bags, complete with a Linux guide book, German memes, a shark plushie (courtesy of Blåhaj), an introductory book in leftist political theory, and a T-shirt celebrating neurodivergence (long sleeve and no-sleeve options available) - 🛍️

an introductory book in leftist political theory

i thought that this was toxic to most liberals. lol

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

we're not supposed to actually read the book, just pretend that we have. mine supports the union of my ass and my couch.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

jokes on all of us; that stuff is SO DENSE than even reading it won't make you understand it. they literally suggest using a study group to understand it. lol

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It's better in the original [whatever language we don't speak]

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 1 points 16 hours ago

german.

lol

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In all seriousness, you absolutely should read theory, it's really helpful.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It feels more like philosophy, which I love but only have an amateur training in

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 3 points 16 hours ago

We're all philosophers, even if we don't realize it! Philosophy is our world outlook, the way we percieve the world. To study philosophy is to play an active role in how we perceive the world, think about it, etc. I'm a Marxist-Leninist, and in being one I study dialectical materialism. This forms the basis of how I interpret the world, but even before studying dialectical materialism I had my own, uncodified, generally liberal approach to seeing the world. A good bit of idealism, metaphysics, and an attempt at materialism is how I would describe it.

Philosophy isn't the realm of the educated, it's for everyone. Part of how the ruling class retains cultural hegemony is in disseminating ruling class ideology, which often tries to gatekeep philosophy to high academia. While it requires study, philosophy is ultimately understandable even with purely amateur training.

By the way, if you're curious about Marxism-Leninism, I wrote a basic study guide you're welcome to check out.

Just start saying shit it doesn’t matter how dumb or good

[–] Beehaw_Girl@beehaw.org 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Something about your comment makes me feel personally attacked.

[–] Danarchy@lemmy.nz 1 points 2 days ago

But I barely know you so at most it’s a random act of senseless verbal skullduggery

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

hey we don't bite.

most of the time.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This ain't Reddit. Welcome aboard!

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

To be fair, that depends more on instance.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

That's true.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 days ago

Just comment!

[–] MECHASQrL@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Same, this is my very first message in 3y on Lemmy.

[–] LemmyFeed@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 hours ago

Keep it up! Comments are easier than posting imho and everyone is pretty chill around here most of the time.

[–] pseudo@jlai.lu 3 points 14 hours ago

Also welcome! hope to hear more from you :3

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Well done. Second one will be easier. :)

[–] Barbuzie@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

You are not alone, my friend

[–] EldestMalk@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Kinda in the same boat. I bask in the gentle flow of the comments here vs. the torrent of hateful slop on Reddit. I don't even feel the need to comment usually. Most of the time what I was going to say has already been said.

glad to have you!

[–] CyroSignal@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Welcome to the community !!!

[–] nehal3m@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

We’re all mentally challenged anyway, just open your rat hole to whatever song your thinker dreams up.

[–] abrer@programming.dev 3 points 2 days ago

Also a longtime lurker with little time. But I like the verse and try to engage where possible.

You are welcome 😄

[–] BlackJerseyGiant@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

'Yoda Eye Squint' You should be!

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Congrats! 👏 🎉

I, also, was a long time reddit lurker. I still lurk here, but I've posted more on Lemmy then I ever did on reddit. Jump in! The water is fine.

It's mostly not worth the trouble.
