I have 32GB of RAM! DDR4, though.

Same! 16, though.

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

My main rig has 64 of DDR5 and my backup rig (Yes I'm that kind of fucking nerd) has 32 of DDR4.

I'm so fucking lucky I bought this hardware JUST in time.

Are we still ok?

Two ~~Chrome~~ Librewolf tabs

[–] FeatherConstrictor@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hold on I use librewolf is it more RAM intensive than it's counterparts?

I don't know if it's strictly more, but Firefox (and, by extension, Librewolf) does use a good amount of RAM. Also I use Librewolf too; the strikethrough is to suggest not to use Chrome.

Sometime between November 5th 2024 and Jan 20th 2025 I decided I had better replace my ailing laptop before something drove prices up. I was debating between the 32G of RAM I needed and the 64G I wanted. I am really glad I splurged back then. The way costs have gone between tariffs and AI's demand for braaainz (plus the fact that vibe coders don't make any account for efficiency or specs) it feels like I practically got it for free.

I'm happy both my PCs have 32 😅.

Laptop is at 16 but the expansion slot is broken so it is what it is. 16GB on linux is alright for me though.

I did splurge on a 2TB 990Pro SSD though, that I am so happy about!

Depending on what you do 16 might be plenty or 32 can be barely enough.

My home server still has 96GB. At this rate i might shut it down and call it my retirement plan

[–] hardcoreufo@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right over the last 5 years I think I bought about 4-5k of ram and storage. Which is a lot but I think at today's rates I could flip it for 50k. I'm extremely tempted to do so cause prices have to come down right, but knowing my luck this will all be worth 500k in a few years and I'll never be able to buy it again.

I say hoard it unless there's an emergency where you need money.

I'm still getting by with the machine I built in 2016 with what I thought was a beefy 16GB of RAM. Hopefully I can get some cheap parts and build something better after the AI bubble bursts.

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

16 is fine. I still use a laptop with 4 when I'm traveling

Isn't this like from 2015 or something? I usually don't use chrome but when I have to I don't see anything wild.

[–] nialv7@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

i would sell them and retire

[–] restingOface@quokk.au 6 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Is this a sloppified version, exacerbating the reason 32 rams is so scarce right now?

I hope not!

I found it elsewhere myself 🤷🏻

I've got 32 of a fast ddr4 just sitting in a parts pile. Neither machine I currently use can take it.
