/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Huh. Just watched that last night. The Princess Bride. Both me and my partner immediately recognized him. ("He'd make a good Ferengi." ... "Wait, he already is!")

To be fair Zek’a hearing had gotten bad. He mistook Quark for Rom.

Never get involved in a trade war in Ferenginar

You should also never mess with a grand nagus when death is on the line

YOU FOOL! You've fallen victim to one of the classic rules of acquisition!

Inconceivable!

I saw an interview with Wallace Shawn where he claimed that while he understood that Vizzini was supposed to be a funny character, that he didn't personally understand that sort of humor. So, since they're similar characters, he likely didn't get Zek's humor, either.

Armin as Quark really elevated the Ferengi, as did Jeffrey Combs.

Wallace Shawn brought them back down to their silly origins. It was not good. He was basically a silly goblin.

Yet, despite how silly Zek seemed, and how insane it seemed that he'd be respected by other Ferengi back when DS9 was airing, it now seems strangely prophetic. Some political leaders and billionaires today have similarly pathetic personalities to Zek, but they're also not even good at business. The main reason they get more money is that people respect them, despite their silly personalities and also despite their lack of business acumen.

Let me be clear: I don't think Zek was particularly badly written. I think his plotlines and motivation and mental state were written in ways that made sense for that series. I think that Wallace straight up did a bad job in bringing him to life and the character and episodes suffered as a result.

Zek wasn't good at business either, at least not by the time we saw him.

He was basically a silly goblin.

And it was glorious. Not as glorious as Brunt, obviously. But still.
