Hello USA. Through tears I write this. I am an eight year old girl whose father is a humble home-provider. He can no longer make a living housing fellow citizens, and we cannot afford basic goods and services. We are suffering under the Mamdani regime. Please invade Manhattan with overwhelming deadly force and liberate us from oppression under shakira law.

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
We stand with Staten Island and the Cuomintang!

here's to another thousand years of communism, you old fart
If communism had a thousand years to develop, we'd all have lifespans of 400 years via the eradication of disease and propagation of open-source cybernetics, the Earth's climate would be at pre-1800 carbon values, global habitats would be protected by cultural practice, children would be raised in true community, cars would be a historical relic, and the local neighborhood bar would have the sort of substances you can't even conceptualize.

Imagine solving all world problems just by making about 50,000 extraordinarily wealthy people be content with just a regular ass yacht and a retirement colony in Portugal.
My mother was executed under shakira law for acetabulofemoral dishonesty
New Jersey has established a series of refugee camps with tents available for rent at the most efficient market price. All the working age members of your family are welcome with a right to access affordable means-tested healthcare options.
Actually something. Kudos where it's due.
Redditors have been doing rent freeze propaganda for the entire time reddit has existed so it will be fun seeing how redditors react to this
Landlords on suicide watch.

that's where we stand on the street and shout "do a flip" right?
That's good, but I'm still not forgetting this:
I want to be clear on where I stand. I believe both Nicolas Maduro and Miguel Diaz-Canel are dictators. Their administrations have stifled free and fair elections, jailed political opponents, and suppressed the free and fair press.
well yeah he's an elected official in the us, of course he sucks. there will never be anyone good "in offfice" until we destroy and rebuild this entire evil society
why? he was literally never going to be a communist and never ran on that platform. you cannot get a commie through electoralism. but the fact of the matter is he is making a difference and many lives in new york are going to be better because of him and his actions.
he can say whatever liberal shit he wants as long as he keeps doing this stuff, because we know he’s not the end goal.
it's because he had no reason to say that shit that it's fucken weird and untrustworthy that he did.
this isn't a photo op with trump, this didn't get anyone out of ICE custody

he can say whatever liberal shit he wants as long as he keeps doing this stuff, because we know he’s not the end goal.
So as long as the material conditions for people in NYC improve, he can co-sign whatever western talking point he wants then? That's not acceptable to me. It makes every step forward feel hollow, because I have to wonder when this will happen again.
Zohran is popular and likeable, people listen to what he says. For a lot of people, he'll be their introduction into socialism. When he says Cuba is run by a repressive dictator, people will accept that. Sure, it's on us to dispel the misinformation, but we won't reach everyone that he does. In my opinion, we can't be tepid about this. He's doing good things, but there needs to be serious accountability for throwing international solidarity out in the process.
American leftist will rain down fire and brimstone and yell about the crimes of Europe and the Global North until it comes to getting their slice THEN its suddenly all part of the “plan” and totally strategic.
It's the basis of social fascism. Material benefits and splitting of the loot at home, imperial subjugation and exploitation abroad. This is his position and it should be opposed
so many landlords are gonna have to start applying for jobs lmao eat shit and die parasites
This is TERRIBLE News! HOW will Landlords make a PROFIT if they can't RAISE Rents for Buildings that they do ZERO Maintenance on? WHAT happens if all the Landlords LEAVE? THEN who will OWN the Buildings people ALREADY live in and Maintain on their OWN without any Financial Incentive? THINK of the POOR LANDLORDS Libtards!
Nice. He seems to be doing good for New York and New Yorkers so far?
He’s overwhelmingly popular, even with your average lib. He has ~70% job approval so far, which is even higher than his favorability of ~60%. Pretty impressive to have that number of people who openly say they aren’t a fan of admit you’re doing a good job
Wow, I didnt realize just how popular he is as I'm not in NY and have only loosely followed, thats pretty cool to see. Thanks for explaining!
He’s more popular now than when he won the election, and that’s saying a lot. Regular people genuinely love the guy, despite the mainstream media doing their best to manufacture scandals.
His biggest “scandal” so far was a snowball fight where NYPD officers claimed to have been violently assaulted, but the entire thing is on video from 100 angles and it’s just a snowball fight lol
Unequivocally good. This is a clear win.
Hmm.....earn the vote of many, many tenants, or earn the vote of a handful of landlords
Tough decision I'm sure, as his opponents who lost the election would tell you
(I'm not doubting he did this to genuinely help people, I'm just saying that trying to win the votes of the majority over the minority is supposed to be an easy choice that just basically walks into your lap)
Mind you, many of those landlords don’t even live in NYC. Just hating on tenants for the love of the game
(I'm not doubting he did this to genuinely help people, I'm just saying that trying to win the votes of the majority over the minority is supposed to be an easy choice that just basically walks into your lap)
And yet Democrats seem to fuck it up over and over again, including with Israel.
How cool would it be if NY landlords had to get jobs and off the backs of renters
Google says rent-stabilized units are "about half" of rental stock, so that's substantial. Still, would be nice for it to apply to all leases.
Yes it’s only those units. I’m not sure what legal powers (if any) the city has to impact those other units, but this is an incredible start
Obviously this is good, but looking a little further ahead I'm curious what the attempted counterpunch will be here. What are we expecting class solidarity from landlords to look like?
I wouldn't be surprised if they attempted to wait it out and just not rent, though this would be picking a regulatory fight as I believe NY has vacancy laws.
As of now, their move looks like it's going to be trying to get rent control in its entirety struck down by the courts, or at least fundamentally change how the Rent Guidelines Board functions in order to overrule this
i need to know what the stats and numbers look like for this. like ok, you did a rent freeze, maybe that saves a lot of poor people some money, but why specifically 1-2 year leases? why not freeze all rents? what are they prioritizing here, what are the numbers? what target are they trying to hit? is anything holding them back?
Rent stabilized units in NYC (~40% of rental stock) are only offered in 1-2 year leases because the Rent Guidelines Board sets the rate for the maximum rent increase by % on a yearly basis. Landlords are required to offer a lease renewal to tenants in rent stabilized units at the end of their 1 or 2 year lease period
I believe the point is that rent freezes normally apply to leases longer than 2 years but personally i’ve never signed a lease longer than a year so I would guess this affects more people than most rent freezes have before.
I would also guess this doesn’t apply to people who signed leases with planned rent increases.
ALL leases? so he froze rent for COPS?! BIG yikes!
A lot of cops don't live in NY, they commute from NJ
Which is genuinely insane, it seems like a no-brainer that cops should be required to live in their jurisdiction
No they live on Long Island and Jersey
That's cheating!
