There was one I used to enjoy whose whole schtick was doing skits mocking onspiracy types. Then came Trump, and now if I go try to watch his stuff he's either the dumbest kind of MAGA or he's wearing the mask well enough it's hard to tell if he means it or he's satirizing it or if he just wants money and MAGA is a more valuable audience to advertise at.
Technology connections remains awesome thankfully. Hell him touching on politics made me respect him more as he did it sparingly because he felt an obligation to use his platform to speak up
He tapped perfectly into that zeitgeist where the world is falling apart but we are still making entertainment, having kids, doing laundry. So many others refuse to acknowledge the oligarchical elephant in the room (looking at you, Legal Eagle) and I get that's how they make their living so can't go off the deep end but the tone deaf-ness of NOT acknowledging is so frustrating.
Thanks, Alec, for helping me feel like I'm not losing my mind in a world that is pretending we're not hurtling headlong toward the worst parts of the 19th century.
And thank YOU for mentioning Legal Eagle in this discussion. I had to stop watching him once Trump got back in. He started coming off like he was clinging desperately the rule of law despite it constantly devaluing in front of all our eyes. I get it, he's a lawyer, but there's only so long you can go "wait, they can't do that! The piece of paper says so!"
My longest subscribed channel, Nerd3, has somehow remained almost the exact same channel for over a decade. I don’t know how he does it.
Probably the same way SteveMRE1983 does - finding a niche and having no need to "spice it up for modern audiences".
He unintentionally stumbled in to an algorithmic gold mine though legitimate passion for an obscure and oft overlocked type of thing.
Unboxing video + international food + millitary stuff. Like, it’s the perfect algorithm bait, and he just… was unironically interested in the history, functionality, and development of military rations.
Because he leaned heavily into Patreon to fund his channel, and now makes content that he wants instead of content to feed the algorithm. Been following him for over a decade and was more than happy to throw him a dollar

Back in the day I would watch the Hodge twins, they had a channel on gym culture and another where they would joke around about obscure current events.
Last I saw them they had gone full tilt maga and mainly discussed politics, yeaaa no. I'm out.
Elliot Hulse was another similar surprise. From weightlifting and mentoring kids to "Trump is your daddy."
Totally watched Elliot Hulse back in the day as well, I never quite understood how working out and self improvement became an entry point for MAGA and right wing authoritarian, but it did.

Most of the ones I watched I watched because they did mod spotlights for mods I was trying to wrap my head around. The only one I particularly liked was Mischief of Mice, I think they remain relatively wholesome?
They either turn out to be really wholesome people, or absolute pieces of shit with little in between.

I don't really watch youtubers, but when I was going through rough times, Hololive's Gura was my favorite streamer, I wonder how she's doing now.

Gawr Gura is now Sameko Saba, but also she just stopped Youtube memberships a few days ago because she hasn't been able to stream for months. Said it was due to a chronic sickness and that a longer explainer tweet is coming :-(
The one that disappointed me the most was kliksphilip. I would've been able to move past the Hogwarts Legacy shit for simply being an ignorant normie, but what he said about Brianna Ghey was truly unforgivable.
