Star Citizen is a cult.

mediocrely-hyped money laundering play with gorgeous graphics

They should buy and merger an AI company and go to IPO next. This scam has got legs.

[–] Matty_r@programming.dev 3 points 3 days ago

Oh man, I hadn't even considered that. They will absolutely start implementing some AI nonsense for sure. Any excuse for Chris Roberts to move the goal posts even further.

[–] mintiefresh@piefed.social 11 points 3 days ago

Scam Citizen.

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

The longer this goes on, the more of a miracle Freelancer seems to me. Even though Microsoft had to step in and make Chris Roberts cut the crap.

Didn't they just lay off a bunch of people after buying a brand new building?

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Can't wait for 2035, when they drop the next demo.

It's still the only game of its type and I very much enjoy playing it.

5k ship is disgusting, having selection of 1k people to have a window to buy it is disgusting. Having to spend X amount to even have the chance to buy one is disgusting...

But I will continue to play it. The game has legs and the past 16 months have been filled with content after content drop. People love to hate on it, but the proof is there, there's no better space sim out there. The new raid is tons of fun and takes +10 people (at least for our org)

If people wanna throw money? Fuck it, I got no empathy left for imaginary person i never met getting conned into dropping such money on a game. I hope they're happy with their jpg and one day they get ship they were promised.

That's fair, but at the very least you have to recognise that's it's fair to call Star Citizen a scam.

I mean they've literally lied about planning to have exploration gameplay and continue to sell JPEGs/cash shop items worth hundreds of dollars when they have no plans to include exploration gameplay.

Thats just one notable example. There are many others (hundreds of major cases of lying and premeditated falsehoods in search of financial gain).

I dunno man, I bought my m80 and now I have wrecked some scrubs with my m80.. doesn't really feel like a scam to me.

I backed the initial kickstarter with around 20 bucks, just enough to get Squadron 42. I regret nothing, the entertainment from just watching the whole thing unfold was totally worth it. Anyone spending anything more on it might have a bad time.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm getting the same entertainment without having spent any money on the game.

I do want my time back from trying the game during free weekends though. What I had to experience during those was utterly abysmal.

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Doing the station-to-planet transition was pretty cool as a novelty, though.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 3 days ago

Stutters (on a more than powerful enough PC), glitches and crashes ruined the experience though. Also, none of the spaces are well designed for actual gameplay and instead force the player to endlessly walk for no good reason. This would be fine exactly once in a narrative experience ("Look at this cool set piece we've built!"), but not for routine things like getting to your ship or a store every time.

[–] belated_frog_pants@beehaw.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lol this game will never make close to its money back

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

It doesn't need to "make that money back", none of that is corpo lending expecting return of investment, just thousands of players that really shouldn't own credit cards. They have sold 1bn without even needing to deliver a "full game"

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago

I don't like playing games in Early Access. Star Citizen is a dream game that is close to come true, but unfinished. I don't want to play an unfinished dream, because my first experience will not be as good as it could be. I give it another 10 years, but I start getting old...
