This isn't really an article, but a link to the AMD Vivado Design Suite's page. If you scroll down, you will see this:

It's a creative suite made by AMD. They are removing the free option for Linux.

It’s a creative suite made by AMD.

How is this a creative suite?

Vivado Design Suite is a software suite for synthesis and analysis of hardware description language (HDL) designs, superseding Xilinx ISE with additional features for system on a chip development and high-level synthesis (HLS). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivado

Saying creative suite pretty much says that it's some kind of Adobe competitor.

I honestly had no idea as to this before I saw a previous post. That's how AMD markets this thing, though. I'd be very appreciative as to how I can edit this post in order for it to make sense to a wider audience.

it is a suite of software for creating virtual-integrated-circuits within field-programmable-gate-arrays ( FPGAs ), for people who want to fake an integrated-circuit, or who want the most-extrememly-fast compiler, or some such thing, hardware-accelerated.

( feel free to paraphrase, no crediting-me obligatory: that gets the sense of it.

I've read that the fastest Haskell compiler ever made was in an FPGA )

Really feels like the kind of thing you want unix type guys to hype.

I understand how to edit posts. Please re-read and get back to me about the implied intent of that comment.

So targeted. Fuck you to I guess AMD.

[–] lyrial@anarchist.nexus 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a weird feeling. They are by all standards the only gpu/chip manufacturer that has a good OSS series of drivers for Linux. They've gathered a lot of good will over the decades, and suddenly pull this very unreported thing because very few know about it.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 month ago

Im trying to think of reasons and all I can think is that they dont like the bug reports from the non paying users because the systems are probably very non standard compared to paying customers who are liking running a very stable enterprise image.

preferably, shit on the AI bros, not amd.

amd is just trying to minimize abuse of their software, since the AI industry use it to design their engines. They have a profit motivations too after all, and if industries are abusing the "free" toolkit it makes sense why amd is reimplementing their licenses for their toolkit. I would have done the same thing.

It says "free entry-level access" - is that not a frie tier? Sure, it means Freemium but still.

I have btw no idea what Vivado(tm) is and consequently no iron in this fire.

[–] lyrial@anarchist.nexus 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I should have included this in the post, but if you look the free tier for Linux is gone.

I suppose I am confused about the whole thing. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. If what I thought was wrong, I will delete the post.

Edit; Adding that pic

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What? Don't put yourself down like that. The 2nd screenshot is pretty unambiguous.

You should've put more thought into creating this post though. You could still edit it.

[–] lyrial@anarchist.nexus 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I have edited it with the 2nd screenshot. I've been going through a lot mentally so I'm self-conscious about posting incorrect information. I misread your comment as well.

Then know that there are people in the world wishing you well, & everybody who's pushing themself makes mistakes, & the more someone's pushing, the more mistakes one makes.

Only people who hide within habit won't make mistakes..

I don't want to be one of them: learning/growing-up's too much good, you know?

I, for one, really appreciate your post, & once I saw the new $1,200 USD entry-level-fee for using Xilinx/AMD FPGA's in Linux .. well, that means I'll have to buy some other brand, for that learning.

With all the money they receive from this incredibly intelligent business decision, they are going to stop it from crashing every two seconds... Right?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Good that we already moved off from Xilinx.
