Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

ah, classic Sichalskardassianerselbsterkennunddannaufdenbodenguckerei aka Eigenvergarakung

[–] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 17 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Not sure if real word or cat walked over your keyboard.

[–] aldhissla@piefed.world 7 points 2 days ago

It's how you write German compound nouns. You say a phrase and your cat types it without spaces

You know that cats are gods, right? This is exactly how all languages have formed. Cats walking over the primordial keyboard, generating the first languages for the first humans. Then some cats decided to go down and live with the humans, continuing to walk on their new keyboards. This is why languages evolve.

It's real.

What are going to do, doublecheck me?

Eigenvergarakung is fucking hilarious

[–] Ratio_Tile@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sorry, were we talking about modern America or Star Trek

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

Could also be Russia, Israel... Britain used to be that, but now we're just hated.

[–] vzqq@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 2 days ago

You are sure doing your best to… keep up with the Cardassians.

[–] jonsnothere@beehaw.org 11 points 2 days ago

"Wir haben es nicht gewußt" (although that one seems to be more of an idiom in Belgium and the Netherlands talking about the German civilians' defense of not knowing about the Holocaust)

If I thought about it as much as my brain wants to I would drive myself mad. The system has too much inertia and the fixes we are forced to implement now (and for the next little while) are damage mitigation, not fixes. It's just not going to be fixed for a while. If I tried to address it with the same tenacity that I approach my day-to-day problems my mind would overheat and I'd die. So I just have to spend most of my time brushing my teeth and keeping my car from breaking down and trying to find a fucking job so I can continue to buy food at my accustomed rate. I squeeze in a little damage mitigation where I can but I can't afford to dwell on the elephant that we have to eat. Too much problem for tonight.

It's the middle class that are the drivers of revolutions. Eliminate them, make people worry about rent and food, and there's no energy for organization.

Same thing that happened to Iran in the past 10 years by the way.

The German word for it is "Mitläufer".

[–] riwo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

hm, i don't know if that's the right word. i think it's more for doing something because everyone else does as well, which applies less here? although i guess it could be argued that living a "productive" life under an imperial system does still prop up that system, even if it is not in direct support of its imperial actions. to not be a mitläufer then, one would need to either leave that system or sabotage/fight it as much as possible.

[–] mathemachristian@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago

Mooching off of it seems acceptable too especially if you can manage to slow any of it down in the process.

This is why Garak and Bashir is the best ship ⛴️

It's a testament to Louise Fletcher's acting abilities that I would instantly experience utter revulsion whenever she appeared in DS9. Right up there with Trump in levels of disgust.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 4 points 2 days ago

Oh especially those last episodes where things really ramp up (yes it’s ancient but I’m not gonna spoil it for those who haven’t seen it) she really takes you along for the insanity ride.

Fooken spoonheads

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Kinda sounds like the plot from an anime that's currently airing (except a pharmaceutical company family instead of reality TV stars).

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 29 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Are you confusing cardassian (an alien species from Star Trek) with the Kardashians?

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh, lol. Yes. Yes I am. I was like "I thought it was spelled with a K" but I see enough people with romanized named that get spelled differently all the time for seemingly no reason that I kinda just ignore it. The "the rest of the galaxy thinks of your species as 'the evil ones'" seems extreme, but I assumed it was just exaggerated for comedic effect 🤣

Close enough.

[–] Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org 5 points 2 days ago

Oh, so that's why it seemed odd.
