The researchers analyzed data from Canadian mobile devices travelling to U.S. metro areas

Yeah, there's your problem. People I know leave their phone at home and use a burner for US travel now.

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

Seems like the numbers might be skewed even more if people don't have a Canada/US plan.

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It isn’t even just burners. Even before everything got like it is now, I would get a US-based SIM/eSIM, because it was always cheaper than roaming with my Canadian plan.

[–] grey_maniac@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 months ago

Your phone's IMEI doesn't change when you change SIM cards, so it depends what they tracked.

[–] dom@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Wouldn't this mean they underestimate the number of people who are in the us from canada, rather than over estimate?

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yes and I think that's what the person you're replying to is implying as well.

[–] dom@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 months ago

Oh durr. Thanks

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 5 points 3 months ago

When did they start doing that though? This study is only comparing numbers from April 2025 to March 2026.

The United States federal government has said loud and clear that not only are foreign visitors not wanted, they are risking their freedom by setting foot on American soil. I don't see how anyone would be interested in visiting under those conditions who doesn't have family or the like in the States.

"I'm telling everybody in Canada, please come. We love you, we need you, and we miss you,"

That's not what we're seeing from the White House, lady.

You keep seeing people say: "if you can make it to our State, we'll make you feel at home!"

Yeah ... but if we get nabbed by ICE along the way or on the streets then tough luck right?

Even IF I was willing to risk all of that. They're still threatening Canada as if it's a fucking joke and then it isn't. Americans saying shit like: "hey none of this travel would be an issue if join us ... ... and then we'll pillage your water, resources, taxes, and land ... then strip you of your freedoms, healthcare and voting rights".

So many people are talking about if this is all a PR issue and there aren't REAL problems.

There's a bridge near Detroit that is apparently easy on the Canadian side to accidentally head across the border into America. Used to be they'd just turn you around and sent you back, but I read at least one story of a guy who got detained in an American facility for a few weeks before he could back him, and all he did was take a wrong turn.

They've still got a 3000 per day quota, and they've never hit it, so they aren't looking for excuses to NOT arrest people, even if it gets kicked later. That's why they've found that something like 75% of ICE arrests have been bogus. If anything, the likelihood is that they'll get MORE aggressive, not less.

I know too many people who willingly go to Florida like nothing is happening. I get traveling in winter but why is it always fucking Florida????? These are other queer people too!

(I'd like to propose my original country of Costa Rica as an alternative)

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Your birth country is amazing and better than anything in the state of Florida. Except the food. I haven't been in 20 years but is it still gallo pinto con lizano todos las dias?

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Yes, gallo pinto is the national dish (it's vegetarian/vegan!). We have a lot of fresh produce too, given it's a tropical country. The Costa Rican version uses black beans.

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yeah gallo pinto is very good and healthy. The people of the country are extremely healthy.

What I was curious about was if the flavors of the cooking in the country have changed much over the past 20 years. I had to go to tourist restaurants sometimes for a change in spice and flavor.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Ah that I can't answer unfortunately, I haven't been back in quite a while

The United States federal government has said loud and clear that not only are foreign visitors not wanted, they are risking their freedom by setting foot on American soil.

Which makes it even more puzzling that European automotive restoration YouTubers are now moving to the US, or starting to spend extended periods of time there. Mat Armstrong literally bought a house in Florida (might've been in Miami proper) so he and his crew could hang out while they restore that forex scammer's Bugatti and Sreten (M539Restorations) has been restoring a super rare E31 in Virginia for... I don't know how long he was in the states since the videos take longer to come out than all the action itself, but it must've been a few weeks at least to make 3 hour-long videos.

Granted they're all white folks, but so am I and I wouldn't want to park my ass there while Trump's in charge.

[–] anguo@piefed.ca 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

automotive You have your answer

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 3 months ago

You don't really NEED to fly to the US to restore old BMWs or crashed Bugattis though. They're quite literally doing it voluntarily.

[–] bridgeburner@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

They prolly are rich then, the US government loves the rich

[–] Bebopalouie@lemmy.ca 27 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Until it’s zero it’s not enough IMO.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 months ago

I'd like to see our government step up on the anti-US front though.

[–] NottaLottaOcelot@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

there was an expectation that things might bounce back by now, about 15 months into this travel boycott the business outlook remains dismal.

Americans are stunningly narcissistic. They changed nothing and just assumed that we’d forget about all the insults and economic warfare just because time has passed?

As the narcissist’s prayer goes:

That didn't happen.

And if it did, it wasn't that bad.

And it it was, that's not a big deal.

And it it is, that's not my fault.

And if it was, I didn't mean it.

And if I did, you deserved it

We have not travelled to the States for many years, but I must admit, I miss the people and the exciting places we went. Can I find fun places like that in Canada? Absolutely. But it is too bad that one person, one man out of 50 billion people, can turn people against each other the way he has. So with today's events, I don't foresee going back to the States any time soon. But I believe that most of the people down agree with their fearless leader, but ... "what can they do?"

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I agree but I think it's one man out of about 400 million people thereabouts, not 50 billion (unless you were exaggerating for effect).

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 months ago

It is not one man. Congress can stop him but they don't the Supreme Court could stop doing Shadow proclamations that allow trump to do whatever he wants till many years pass and that shit actually goes through the courts. The fact everyone blames Trump and think things well be better when he leaves is just stupid there are so many people involved, and they are not just going to go away.

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Anyone still traveling to the U.S. for other than life threatening reasons at his point is an open supporter of fascism, and deserve whatever traumas they get.

[–] bluemite@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Doing any work in the U.S. is now supporting fascism. They need to find an honest job.

[–] bluemite@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago

That comment is just ignorant. Sometimes people have to go to the US for their job. If you think that in the current world these people should (and could) just find another job, you're out of touch with what it's like for the average person to find and maintain employment.

To balance this, I wonder how many Canadians would have to go to the US but leave their personal phone at home. I for sure would consider leaving it home so it's not searched through at the border (I have a pro phone with no personal data, no social network app, etc.)̈.

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

and wont pick up til the fascist freak crew is gone

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago

I hope it never does. Trump is a symptom of the problem and hopefully has exposed that being reliant on a foreign power is not good.

Yet, most people still spend several hours every day in "virtual US" (GAFAM).
