A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions

Rules: (interactive)

1) Be nice and; have funDoxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them

2) All posts must end with a '?'This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?

3) No spamPlease do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.

4) NSFW is okay, within reasonJust remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com. NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].

5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions. If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.

6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world

7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.

8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.

Facebook. Specifically, to stay the fuck away from it.

Same with twitter/X and every other platform made by meta.

if you are involved with people over the age of 40 on a regular basis you have to use it.

for people under 40, it's IG

for people under 30, it's tiktok.

Mastodon, Misskey, Loops, Pixelfed, Bookwyrm, Funkwhale, Peertube, Friendica, Hubzilla, Pleroma, and obviously PieFed

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Oooh I haven't posted to Loops in a while. Thanks for the reminder.

We have the best nerds. Best in the world. Have I told you the nerds here are the best? We have them. They're here.

It's a great site, but I'm not sure it would qualify as social media

[–] bazzett@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

I would say BearBlog. A no frills, no bullshit blog hosting platform. It has many interesting people, and you can follow its "trending" feed via RSS.

Going out to public places and being social (bars, parks, parties, gatherings).

[–] kbal@fedia.io 4 points 5 months ago (2 children)

That is social, but it isn't media.

[–] Libb@piefed.social 3 points 5 months ago

Going out and meet cool people at the library? ;)

[–] weaponG@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

It can be if there are menus, photos, videos, audio, and literature involved. :)

I'm not gonna find my wife in a bar

I'm gonna find her in the ditch next to the bar

StoryGraph! It's basically Goodreads, only it's not owned by Amazon and it doesn't suck.

[–] AskewLord@piefed.social 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

i have used it. i thought it sucked.

goodreads also sucks, but it sucks less and is way more intuitive and easy to use. plus i can use it on a desktop.

YSK social media makes your social skills worse.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 5 months ago

outside of this trust cafe has merit. Maybe even a better community really but as nice as it is its still not federated.

Gab Social.

Got mentioned in some thread so decided to download. I didn't immediately hate it. It appears to be similar to what Twitter was when it was upcoming but admittedly I don't use it often enough to talk any more about it.

It's unfortunately a far-right hangout.
