This is how they destroyed trains, this is how they'll bring air travel to its knees inshallah

The airport would need to provide a good experience to their patrons or they would take their business to the airport across the road

Anyone seriously making the case that privatization leads to efficiency at this late date deserves the wall. If your cost-saving plan is to add a middle man, or to sell off something you own so you can rent it back indefinitely, the only options for you are the re-education camp or the log chipper.

Nobody is this stupid. These claims are made with purely malicious intent.

I remember getting emails from DOGE while I worked at a government agency, encouraging all of us to quit and be productive members of society by joining the private sector.

I got fired by Meelon and joined the private sector; people are really running around pretending to do work here, and smiling through their teeth. Psychotic bullshit is the correct description of what goes on in the private sector.

You underestimate Liberalism. These people will LITERALLY deny reality. No amount of evidence will sway them. Like canadian libs will claim canada is the best country in the world and all the reasons they give arent true. But pointing out that will do nothing. They will just keep claiming it, "well, I think so."

Ideology is a fuck. Most people live following the path laid out for them by their society/culture. I hate saying this, but most people dont think all that much, just go along with their cultural conditioning.

Any Canadian who thinks Canada is the best country in the world is delusional. No matter what metric or point of view you measure from, we dont come out on top in any category. We're B tier

And declining

Yep the reddit-logo onguardforthee libs were torn over if it was a good idea or a great idea. Because carney just keeps on winning in their eyes.

The propaganda works. Ordinary folks can hear this shit and think it is plausible. I'm talking about the politicians and pundits specifically. Your friends and family might repeat something like this because they heard it on CNN or NPR, but the lanyard demon on NPR who said it is a mercenary who knows exactly what they're doing.

I'm sure it'll work out great. Just like how my power bill keeps getting lower due to capitalism

[โ€“] unmagical@lemmy.ml 35 points 1 day ago (3 children)

How does running a thing for profit lead to lower cost? That's like the exact opposite of what one would expect to happen.

a question never answered by privatizer fans.

no, they think there are inefficiencies because government runs it (too much staff, they work mandated hours, their pension benefits are tied in old ways, maybe they give contracts to their friends). so efficiencies that actually occur are usually shittier work conditions, sell off of obligations/extra land sometimes, they now give contracts to other friends. but on the other hand government is not on the hook for their debts.

private equity can easily reduce costs for 5 years, if mandated to do so, there is so much shit to sell off to subsidize it for a time, so even price reduction is not a sign of anything

It's wage theft. That's what private corporations do better than the public sector, and until the controversy of selling out public goods dies down, some of it is passed in. This makes the good look cheaper for a bit.

[โ€“] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 3 points 19 hours ago

but on the other hand government is not on the hook for their debts

Except when private owners fuck everything up and beg for bailouts.

[โ€“] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago

I try pointing out that the "inefficiencies" in governments almost always is to private companies but they just keep repeating "private companies good".

[โ€“] hello_hello@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

They sell everything to make line go up and then 5 years later a plane falls from the sky and they blame woke.

[โ€“] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

it doesn't have to make sense, the "private = better, public = inefficient" germ is already inside many people.

[โ€“] Poutine@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

You're all looking at this from the wrong angle. Maybe Mark Carney is based and trainpilled and is setting up VIA Rail for success! /s

More efficient at what? Transferring surplus labor value to the bourgeoisie?

[โ€“] dkr567@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

Making the airports that are already so terrible (looking at Pearson for example) even more terrible. Gotta love the 52nd state.

[โ€“] OttoboyEmpire@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

great, there can be infinitely many airports and flights to a particular airport rarely have inelastic demand, so naturally this is a thing that should be privatized.

[โ€“] fox@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's also the duty of an airport to maximize the amount of time a traveler spends in it to incur the most opportunities for profit. Imagine if one corporation owned the hotels nearby, you could cancel or delay flights and collect on those overnight travellers

[โ€“] OttoboyEmpire@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

vertical integration with vendors and now LAX/Hudson News has market power and is buying up all the cute brick and mortar book stores across every quaint New England hamlet.

these people never explain how giving ownership of these things makes them more efficient

[โ€“] Lussy@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Plane crashes on the daily. Each terminal will be owned by an airline or some random equity group like Sports Gambling xxx holdings and have its own flight controllers.

This is still somehow communism though!

"The superavit is immense, we have never had a better quarter" I say, as I sell the whole factory.
