i think this qualifies as a motte and bailey. they really want to attack hasan for his antizionism, but are tagging along candace owens' antisemitism and holocaust denial because it's a much more defensible condemnation.

gottheimer chose to do this instead of the war powers resolution he was supposedly going to bring today btw.

It's also a setup for the long term. It's useless today because everyone is like "that's fucking ridiculous" but when the wars are all over and Israel has been quiet for a decade or two and Hasan says something in the future that propels him into some sort of relevance for whatever reason, they dig up the "he's antisemitic" accusations all over again and people actually believe them because they're verified by things like "Look even the senate condemned him for it!"

You will have young liberals in the future that know nothing about anything of what is currently happening and they will believe it without the context people currently have.

they've been trying that with "america deserved 9/11" and it hasn't been working

[–] MattEagle@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

At this point they're just handing out free advertisement

It wouldn't surprise me if Republican talking heads (who are actual, existing antisemites) were told to promote antisemitic views or were propped up because of their views with the purpose of later conflating them with anti-zionists. Candace Owens going full-blown Holocaust denial is incredibly convenient for creating legislation that targets leftists. Meanwhile, she and people like Richard Spencer will remain untouched. Pro-Palestinian protesters meanwhile get charged on whatever bullshit.

Hasn't Germany been doing this already? They use anti-nazi laws against Palestinian protesters? The rest of NATO is likely cooking up something similar.

In Germany comparing other crimes against humanity to the Holocaust is treated similar to denying the Holocaust.

It's not always unreasonable to treat relativization like denial since Neonazi claim the Nazis weren't so bad because other countries committed crimes against humanity too. But that's very different from people saying some other crime against humanity is really bad and has similarities to the Holocaust.

The only other comparable event is of course the Holodomor. Because, you know, commies n shit.

Do you think stonetoss and Elon are jealous the institutions never are offended by what they say, but Hasan Piker says “maybe nazis…bad.” and there is more universal condemnation?!

Move over 4chan, this is what a real edgelord looks like.

You'd think the fash are pretty proud of themselves that under late neoliberalism it's more of a social faux pas to be a leftist anymore.

What's really funny about this is that so many more people who have never heard about twitch are tuning into his streams now because his name keeps getting brought up. Apparently a bunch of average people have been commenting on his clips saying "idk who this guy is, but i like what he says"

The Streisand effect was coined 20 years ago and they're still falling for it just because they feel so self-important

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You know what I think might happen as a result of this? Candace Owens viewers watching Hasan.

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

And a lot of other normal people too. What a strange reality we live in now

[–] wombat@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

we may have to start making excuses for the lack of terror

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

we've long since run out of excuses for the lack of terror

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 14 points 2 weeks ago

The dems would probably get quite a bit more respect if they rejected this bill on the grounds of it being absolute nonsense to connect these two people. So of course, they'll wholeheartedly support it and probably give statements to the press about how Hasan is even worse.

besides masturbating performatively for their constituents what exactly does this accomplish?

does he lose his gas perks from the mega grocer down the way? Does he have to pay double taxes or can't eat chocolate for a week or what?

jagoff

He isn't invited to the elite swinger parties in DC I'm guessing.

[–] TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago

Their loss I guess.

"Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?"

It's inciting stochastic violence.

Amazing how it only seems to happen when attacking someone/some ethnicity or to strip rights or cut benefits 🤔
