i think this qualifies as a motte and bailey. they really want to attack hasan for his antizionism, but are tagging along candace owens' antisemitism and holocaust denial because it's a much more defensible condemnation.

gottheimer chose to do this instead of the war powers resolution he was supposedly going to bring today btw.

It's also a setup for the long term. It's useless today because everyone is like "that's fucking ridiculous" but when the wars are all over and Israel has been quiet for a decade or two and Hasan says something in the future that propels him into some sort of relevance for whatever reason, they dig up the "he's antisemitic" accusations all over again and people actually believe them because they're verified by things like "Look even the senate condemned him for it!"

You will have young liberals in the future that know nothing about anything of what is currently happening and they will believe it without the context people currently have.

they've been trying that with "america deserved 9/11" and it hasn't been working

At this point they're just handing out free advertisement

It wouldn't surprise me if Republican talking heads (who are actual, existing antisemites) were told to promote antisemitic views or were propped up because of their views with the purpose of later conflating them with anti-zionists. Candace Owens going full-blown Holocaust denial is incredibly convenient for creating legislation that targets leftists. Meanwhile, she and people like Richard Spencer will remain untouched. Pro-Palestinian protesters meanwhile get charged on whatever bullshit.

Hasn't Germany been doing this already? They use anti-nazi laws against Palestinian protesters? The rest of NATO is likely cooking up something similar.

In Germany comparing other crimes against humanity to the Holocaust is treated similar to denying the Holocaust.

It's not always unreasonable to treat relativization like denial since Neonazi claim the Nazis weren't so bad because other countries committed crimes against humanity too. But that's very different from people saying some other crime against humanity is really bad and has similarities to the Holocaust.

The only other comparable event is of course the Holodomor. Because, you know, commies n shit.
