A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Not terribly much has happened in the last week. The main two developments is the very much expected resumption of fire in Lebanon as the ZIonists are famously agreement-incapable, and the continuing supply of equipment to the Middle East, including the George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier. This means there are now three aircraft carriers in the general vicinity, and while I'm uncertain how much of a role the burnt-out Ford and the increasingly exhausted Lincoln will ultimately play (they were rather ineffective during the first round), there are also a good ~20 destroyers and however many submarines that are carrying their own munitions. I have a couple more paragraphs of exposition below, but it's unlikely to be major news to anybody here, so I've spoilered it.

spoiler

On the one hand, it feels like a resumption of the war for the US at this point would be complete madness. We are getting article after article from even the Western media admitting to US standoff+interceptor missile shortages, as well as detailing the extensive damage to US bases. The Zionists are also getting ever more mired in Lebanon, with Hezbollah's unjammable fibre optic drones playing an ever more prominent role in causing substantial long range damage to invading forces. On the other hand, it is very unlikely that most of the US's remaining firepower is being brought to the region on a mere bluff. For its part, Iran and their allies seem to have their finger on the trigger, with their own extensive repairs, upgrades, resupplies, and adjustments having been made for round two.

Assessing the overall global economic situation is difficult, not least because of a degree of financial manipulation that is almost admirable in its sheer scale and recklessness - to quote Ghalibaf: "Their frontline is the yield curve." Multiple countries are now facing real and desperate shortages, including major economies like Japan. Diesel prices continue their record rises, and reports about the potential impacts to all sectors of the global economy are streaming in, with famines around the world now very likely. While the US is profiting from the rise in oil prices, it seems like it will be unable to meaningfully increase production for at least a year or two, and so the US will certainly not be replacing the massive oil barrel deficit to create an energy hegemony, as some have suggested. In contrary: this is the best opportunity in a generation for China, Russia, and Iran to collectively make economic decisions that could cripple entire pillars of American hegemony. However, if the response is lacking - and we've all seen before over the last four years how China's responses to crises have been on the lacking side - we could see a (albeit temporary) strengthening of the US's financial power, as this global crisis will almost certainly result in debt climbing even higher as Western financial institutions grant loans en masse to struggling countries in the developing world. It's very uncertain times.

Peter Thiel calls Pope Leo XIV the “woke American pope.”

He’s worried about Pope Leo working with a “woke American president like AOC” to create a Marxist “Caesar-Papist fusion.”

In leaked audio recordings, Peter Thiel revealed he told JD Vance to ignore Pope Leo XIV on moral issues, including the development of ethical AI.

He also suggested the American pope was a tool of the Antichrist.

https://www.thelettersfromleo.com/p/new-jd-vances-top-donor-suggests

Everyone who doesn't fully support me getting more money and power is the antichrist. This religion thing is great!

[–] immuredanchorite@hexbear.net 77 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

Vance literally converted to Catholicism less than a decade ago. Imagine being an adult, converting to Catholicism, and then letting someone who subsists off of the blood of younger people and even says he is an atheist convince you that the motherfucking pope is the antichrist… And Vance does not suspect Theil (who seems to live in the uncanny valley) or the literal disembodied voices created by mankind that have already been leading people to madness, of being the antichrist.. If this were fiction the story would be had to believe

[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 63 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

This makes a lot more sense if you consider that Vance, and pretty much every right wing adult catholic convert, doesn't actually believe in catholicism. They like the aesthetic and in their political milieu they need to demonstrate some kind of ostensible belief in god, so they flip through the options available for American right wingers and settle on the the trendy one they mentally associate with crusaders murdering muslims.

In just 2 months Cuba overhauled it's petrochemical industry to process it's native crude. A feat of engineering unrivaled by any other country in the world.

Thread breaking down the technical aspects

For decades Cuba had invested in petrochemical research, preparing for a day where their doctors for oil programs with Venezuela would end.

There were 2 key obstacles to overcome, the density of the crude available under their soil, and the high sulfur content

Cuba already refined its own crude but it required naphtha, an oil distillate, that they received via Venezuela, after the US intervention that supply obviously stopped

Naphtha works as a thinning agent, when mixed with their heavy crude it allowed their refineries to process it

Cuban engineers had already developed oil cracking methods that could thin out the oil but these were not implemented due to the economic costs, it was simply a better deal to import naphtha

But the foresight to invest in these technologies proved prophetic

The next hurdle is the high sulphur content in Cuban crude. Sulphur doesn't get pulled out of oil entirely in distillation, and it's extremely damaging to engines and pipes that carry it

Here too, anticipating this day, the investments in R&D saved the island

Sulphur is traditionally removed from oil with metals, usually palladium, which is not found in the island, so Cuban chemists had been experimenting with soils rich in aluminum, with great results

Thanks to the socialist political model, Cuban scientific research is focused on developing sovereignty, not foreign capital, if not for the political guadiance of the Cuban revolution, Cuba would forever be at the mercy of geopolitics

The cost is high, but Cuba proves, they will not bend, they will not surrender, no obstacle is too large to overcome.

Motherland or death, onwards to victory, we are Fidel.

Beijing Tells Chinese Firms to Ignore US Sanctions on Refiners

China ordered companies in the country not to comply with US sanctions on five domestic refiners linked to the Iranian oil trade, in a defiant move aimed at softening the impact of penalties. The refiners — including Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery Co. which was sanctioned last month and several other privately-owned processors — had been facing asset freezes and transaction bans. The US measures unlawfully restrict normal trade with third countries and breach international norms, the country’s commerce ministry said in a statement on Saturday. In a rare move, it issued an order banning recognition, enforcement, and compliance with the sanctions aimed at the five companies. “The Chinese government has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that lack authorization from the United Nations and a basis in international law,” the department said.

Is the Ukraine war still a stupid waste of human life and a slow crawl meat grinder in general? I was talking to a libbed up colleague of mine about the war last night. The average lib still thinks Russia, and Putin specifically of course, are engaging in this war for purely expansionist/imperialist reasons, and have absolutely no conception of Ukrainian politics before 2022 of course. I was able to establish some credibility for myself by insisting that, no, they did not simply claim Ukraine for the love of the game, but initially were intervening in a years long civil war on behalf of a besieged minority receiving the brunt of legal discrimination. This person was completely ignorant of both the civil war and language law/discrimination.

I wish there was a culmination of articles changing their narrative over time from Western media. I remember how bakhmut and other cities were initially declared important fortresses, then brazenly claimed to be killing thousands of Russians per day, and then immediately declared not actually important as soon as Russia finished their sieges. It would be nice to be able to confront them with the changing narrative before their very eyes. I swear to God these people don't have object permanence. They still think Ukraine is soundly winning the war and are baffled at how anyone could think otherwise. Pretty funny that they were talking about how Russia is instituting a more active draft and that shows how weak they must be now, given that of course busification has been a thing for at least 2 years now in Ukraine. Real "Our glorious mobilization, Their wretched draft" hours.

I don't know I'm just ranting as I try to comprehend the brain worms I was just exposed to. I don't even have to start listing alternative sources or narratives with these people. Like, their own sources fall apart under even a little bit of scrutiny. It would blow their minds to hear not just the narrative critiqued but an entirely different vision of events put forward.

The first test flight of the Soyuz-5 medium-lift launch rocket was successfully completed earlier today from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

I’ve been thinking about doing space updates if people are interested, mostly for Chinese and Russian stuff as western coverage is either entirely nonexistent or incredibly dismissive.

More info about Soyuz-5The Soyuz-5 rocket (not to be confused with the Soyuz 5 mission in 1969, which was the first crew transfer in space) is notable for a few reasons. It uses the RD-171MV engine, which is the most powerful liquid fueled engine in the world. A variant of the engine, the RD-180 is used on the American Atlas V rocket, which along with Delta IV had been the only pretty much the only American launch vehicles after the end of the shuttle program and before Falcon 9.

The Soyuz-5 is a replacement for the Zenit-3F rocket, which aside from the first stage engine was Ukrainian. Obviously those parts are no longer available and Site 45 at Biaknonur remained vacant from 2017 until now. The nafo types online have a habit of denying genetically inferior Russians can create anything so they baselessly allege that they stole everything and that it’s a copy of the Zenit-3F. I found this helpful graphic that explain the differences between the two rockets.

Soyuz-5 fills an important niche in Russia’s launch vehicles. Soyuz-2 rockets can launch about 8t into LEO, while Soyuz-5 has a payload capacity of ~17t to LEO. Also the Soyuz-2 is needed for launches to the ISS, which limits availability for other missions. While Soyuz-5 has a payload capacity ~6t less than a Proton-M rocket, the Soyuz-5 uses (highly refined) kerosene and liquid oxygen (abbreviated to kerolox) fuel which is much safer compared to the highly toxic and corrosive Dinitrogen tetroxide and Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine. This means it can have much higher turnaround between launches, is safer for ground crews to handle, and that it could potentially be used for future crewed Orel* missions. Compared to The Angara A5 rocket which has a payload capacity of ~24t to LEO the Soyuz-5 should be cheaper and is better suited certain payloads.

*Orel is the future reusable crew capsule that will eventually replace the Soyuz MS currently in use. Although it seems that Angara A5 will be used instead.

israeli military boats have illegally surrounded the flotilla in international waters and threatened kidnapping and violence.

Communications with 11 vessels have been lost and israeli media claims that 7 boats have been intercepted. Governments must act now to protect the flotilla, hold israel accountable for these flagrant violations of international law and for israel's ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people.

Protect the flotilla. End the siege. Free Palestine.

okay what the fuck amazing bit of Brit lore: https://xcancel.com/buffetbreaker/status/2050062047350550623

Wesley Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander: We’ve lost radars to Iranian attacks. Tomahawk stocks are down about 50%, ballistic missile interceptors by a third, and THAAD by nearly half. Replacing them could take years.

My favourite thing about this guy is that he tried to destroy the world by ordering a nato force to attack Russian troops at an airport in Kosovo and James “you’re beautiful” Blunt and his CO disobeyed the order. Why you would talk to such a maniac about anything is just always funny to me in light of that. thwarted by a British soft boy one hit wonder.

(maybe not news exactly, but at least the bit about how Western news media always manage to find the most bloodthirsty ghouls imaginable to ask for military commentary is pertinent)

BREAKING: President Trump has "rejected" Iran's proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz and the US has prepared a plan for a "short and powerful" wave of strikes on Iran, per Axios.

Have these morons learned nothing? The Epstein Axis are not the folks who get to determine if their "limited strikes" are "short" or not. I know this is just more bluster in Trump's pathetic flailing to construct an off ramp, but it's insane that every time they can just pretend that they can shoot off a few "powerful" airstrikes that will do anything, and somehow Iran will just not respond?

Because that's what we need. Minute-by-minute updates about the shooter and king and queen's visit.

Trump very publicly has said he thought his initial strikes would last a few days and the regime would fall or he’d get negotiating leverage. He expressed extreme surprise when that didn’t happen. Being wrong then is one thing. Doing the exact same thing again 2 months later and still thinking the same thing is so monumentally stupid I can’t even get my head around it. Iran has said if the U.S. attacks again they’re going to go bananas on us and our allies. Does Trump even know they’ve promised that?

What's most amusing is this latest scheme comes on the heels of the easily-predictable failure of the blockade plan, which was never going to work because even trying to cut off that traffic FORCES China to get involved. This war is being run by AI LLMs with inadequate context.

Is there no backstop human analysis and recommendations to both reinforce and counter the AI? Or is Trump's boomer brain just shorted out by the AI? "Between this war plan and the cat videos, America will be great again when we cover it bigly with beautiful Data Centers!"

The DoD literally bragged last month that a 20-man cell was doing what had previously been the work of a 2000-man MI brigade thanks to AI tools. This means that there is ZERO human backstopping or sanity checking happening in the pipeline. None at all. Recipe for disaster.

But then they had to race to pull hundreds of extra intel officers into centcom (article from Mar 4th) Side note incredibly poor taste to brag about intel 3 days after destoying a girls school https://archive.ph/qtAck

U.S. Central Command, meanwhile, is asking the Pentagon to send more military intelligence officers to its headquarters in Tampa, Florida, to support operations against Iran for at least 100 days but likely through September, according to a notification obtained by POLITICO. It’s the first known call for additional intelligence personnel for the Iran war by the administration, and a sign the Pentagon is already allocating funding for operations that may stretch long beyond President Donald Trump’s initial four-week timeline for the conflict. The rush to add people and resources to support efforts that are often organized well in advance of U.S. military action highlights how the Trump team had not fully anticipated the wide fallout of the war it launched alongside Israel on Saturday. “What we’ve seen is a completely ad hoc operation where it appeared that nobody actually understood or believed that military action was imminent,” said Gerald Feierstein, a former senior U.S. diplomat who dealt with the Middle East. “It seems like they woke up on Saturday morning and decided that they were going to start a war.”

oh, so the exact thing that has happened in like all big AI integration cases - cutting personnel because the AI's going to be so much more efficient, followed by it promptly shitting the bed completely and a rush to get those personnel back - happened again? who could have predicted this?

Christians unite with Hezbollah against Israel - Telegraph

Catholic residents of Ras Baalbek say the militia protects churches – and gives them Christmas trees

Article

In a village in northern Lebanon, a crucifix hangs next to a portrait of one of Hezbollah’s most revered leaders.

The Catholic town of Ras Baalbek, which has two Byzantine churches, is working with the Iranian-backed militant group to try to preserve its heritage and protect its 6,000 devout residents from attack by Islamic State (IS) terrorists in nearby Syria.

So close are the two communities that Hezbollah buys a Christmas tree each year for the villagers.

Rifaat Nasrallah, 60, a quarryman whose marble sarcophagi line the village cemetery, asks: “How can we as Christians in this area not be with Hezbollah? They protect our churches.

“They helped us fight IS. During Covid they gave us free care in their hospitals. When there was no electricity they gave us generators. How can we not be with them now?”

An alliance between a Catholic village and a Shia militia will surprise many, but it reflects the complexity of the region and the power of realpolitik.

Mr Nasrallah is hosting The Telegraph in his front room beneath the crucifix and the picture of Hassan Nasrallah (no relation), the secretary general of Hezbollah, who was killed in 2024. Military planes and drones can be heard in the distance.

Israel has been bombing Hezbollah positions across Lebanon since the militant group entered the war in the Middle East on Iran’s behalf on its third day. More than 1,000 people have been killed, with a million more displaced.

Does Mr Nasrallah not worry that Ras Baalbek’s relationship with Hezbollah could place the village in greater danger? He answers with an emphatic “no”.

He says: “The relationship between the village and Hezbollah is stronger than with the Pope. The Vatican did nothing for us when ISIS attacked [previously] but Hezbollah spilt their blood to protect us. The Pope only has prayers.”

It is not an academic question. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they had uncovered a Hezbollah tunnel stocked with weapons near a church in southern Lebanon.

An IDF spokesman said: “Since the establishment of the terrorist organisation Hezbollah, it has systematically worked to exploit the Christian population in Lebanon and turn their areas into battle arenas against Israel.”

The Bekaa Valley is beautiful, dangerous and cosmopolitan in equal measure. Christian, Sunni and Shia Muslim villages sit cheek by jowl.

As The Telegraph drives there, Israeli jets and drones hunt Hezbollah positions in the hills to the west, after the militants fired one of their long-range ground-to-ground missiles towards “the entity” the previous night.

These missiles are large and are said to be launched from adapted shipping containers carried by articulated trucks, making the journey hazardous.

The threat that originally brought Christians of Ras Baalbek and Hezbollah close came from the east. The village is in the foothills of the arid Qalamoun mountains, over which it is possible to trek to a few miles into Syria.

It was from there, from 2013 to 2017 at the height of the Syrian civil war, that IS fighters launched several assaults on the village, threatening to wipe it from the map and behead its Catholic residents.

Mr Nasrallah says: “The first attack came from a village called Qasr, just seven kilometres from here in Syria. IS came over the hills and reached the edge of the village and kidnapped some of my workers and tortured them.

“At first, it was only Hezbollah and the villagers who fought back against the Salafists. We fought together with missiles and rockets. Many were wounded and some died. I was almost killed with shrapnel in my back from a mortar.”

Mr Nasrallah does not say so, but the bond between the villagers and Hezbollah is a case of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” – or that’s how it started.

During the civil war, Hezbollah sent thousands of fighters in support of the Iranian-backed Assad regime. Their adversaries included jihadist organisations, including IS and the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat Al-Nusra.

So, when IS first struck on Lebanese soil in 2013, the group was quick to defend the villagers – unlike the Lebanese army, which only became involved later.

Mr Nasrallah says: “The army was weak. The leader of the army at the time was not strong. He did not have the political support for the fight. Only later, in 2015 and 2017, did they help.”

Two soldiers from the Lebanese army, whose political leaders have recently vowed to disarm Hezbollah, sit with us in Mr Nasrallah’s home as he explains the local politics and the bizarre alliances they have bred. They nod along as Mr Nasrallah’s wife serves us tea and biscuits, their M16 assault rifles propped up at their sides.

Israeli company uses deepfake tech to generate fake Iranian SA victims.

An Israel-based AI firm, "Generative AI for Good", claims to be using deepfake technologies for positive ends. ‘Positive’ appears to mean creating deepfake videos to help the illegal US-Israel war on Iran.

[…]

Generative AI for Good claims that it uses AI to ‘help survivors testify safely — in their real voice, without revealing their identity’. But Israel and its mouthpieces have been shown to have used false allegations ofremoveds and other atrocities on 7 October 2023 to justify its genocide in Gaza.

🛢️ Bessent Predicts “GASOLINE SHORTAGES IN IRAN NEXT.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent posted Monday that Iran’s oil industry is “starting to shut in production” due to the U.S. blockade, that “pumping will soon collapse,” and — in all caps — that “GASOLINE SHORTAGES IN IRAN NEXT.”

The problem is basic arithmetic. Iran in March produced roughly 3.06 million barrels per day of crude, according to OPEC survey data. Of that, it exported approximately 1.1 to 1.5 million bpd (almost entirely to China). The remaining 1.9 to 2 million bpd goes to domestic refining to meet Iran’s own fuel needs.

Even if the U.S. naval blockade cuts Iranian oil exports to zero, Iran’s domestic refining supply chain does not suddenly stop.

The crude that was previously exported would have nowhere to go — filling storage — but the barrels feeding Iranian refineries come from the same fields and move through domestic pipelines entirely insulated from the Strait of Hormuz. Domestic gasoline production does not require export infrastructure.

Iran also survived near-zero export periods in 2019-2020 without domestic fuel shortages. Bessent’s post does not explain the mechanism by which blocked exports translate into gasoline shortages inside Iran.

Copying this over from a different sub: After the US Bombing, a Venezuelan Community Under Siege Speaks

They explained how they truly felt the horror that the Palestinians experience. The difference, they added, was that for them it was a single day while in Gaza it is every day.

At the time, many feared the attack could signal a protracted full-scale land invasion. Such an incursion, they warned, could well be launched in the future. (This was also the opinion of government officials that we conferred with.) They are proud that the Bolivarian leadership remains firm and united. This they attribute to the support of the people such as themselves. The concessions forced upon the government under the threat of an even more devastating attack have been bitter to accept, but better than the alternative of greater destruction.

Our hosts described themselves as Chavistas, militants in support of the current government. Some wore shirts bearing the phrase dudar es traición – to doubt is to betray. Their lived experience is of a nation under imperial siege – in a perpetual state of war with the threat of more. Under such circumstances unity is prioritized. They rejected speculation that the kidnapping was aided by traitors within, arguing that such narratives serve the purposes of the enemy of eroding unity by fostering distrust. They emphasized the continuity of revolutionary policy from Chávez to Maduro and now to Delcy, as she is affectionately called.

Incredibly validating to be able to come to the same conclusions as actual revolutionaries by utilizing dialectical materialism. I hope to continue learning from their examples and am very thankful that so many here are able to utilize the same tools to independently come to the same conclusions

NEW: Senior Iranian Official to Drop Site: Iran Is Setting Its Own Terms for Ending the War

Full tweetA senior Iranian official with direct knowledge of internal diplomatic deliberations spoke to Drop Site News, offering a clearer picture of Tehran’s position as negotiations with the U.S. remain deadlocked and Iran prepares for two dramatically different paths that may unfold in the coming days: a return to diplomacy or a resumption of the war with the U.S. and Israel.

  1. On the conditions for resuming direct talks:

🔸 “We’re currently moving forward with our own design, and we feel continuing negotiations doesn’t make sense until the U.S. government lifts the maritime blockade. The scope of the conflict has expanded, and naturally the issue is no longer purely nuclear.”

  1. On President Trump and U.S.’s approach to diplomacy:

🔸 Iran believes that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been given unprecedented influence over U.S. intelligence estimates and White House decision-making.

🔸 “Our country has had negotiations with the Americans at various levels over the past 30 years — formal and informal, public and back-channel. It’s as if they are showing up to a football match with rugby rules,” the senior official said.

🔸 Iran has total disdain for Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and views him as both oblivious of diplomatic processes and totally ignorant of technical issues.

🔸Kushner is viewed by Iran as Israel’s man at the table. Iran, the senior official said, does not see any reason to deal with these two without a figure like Vice President JD Vance present.

  1. On what Araghchi conveyed to Pakistani mediators:

🔸 “We explained our technical positions to the Pakistani side. Regarding the nuclear issue, solutions that we had previously proposed were raised again so that we could reach a shared understanding with them. Our remarks were not directed at the Americans given that these are bilateral discussions. We believe that the intermediaries themselves should also be technically briefed on the proposals.”

  1. On what a serious U.S. negotiating posture would require:

🔸 Iran has given no public indication it would alter its position opposing a transfer of its enriched uranium, but has also maintained it is willing to resolve the issue as part of a comprehensive settlement with the U.S.

🔸 “These issues, on the ground, have clear and practical solutions, and we have always examined them in meaningful negotiations. Any serious negotiation on the American side must involve a large team, including experts and multiple government departments, so that they can properly understand and process a meaningful agreement that covers the various cross sectoral dimensions on their side.”

  1. On whether Trump can deliver a deal:

🔸 “Our assessment is that we do not see [Trump] as capable of shaping the agreement. Our take is that they’ve basically decided to keep the war going until there’s a regime change” — which the official predicted would continue to fail.

The so-called antisemitism commissioner of Brandenburg had his shed firebombed (complete with red triangle and public letter) by ... drumroll please ... two 25 year old friends / business partners of his. He denies any involvement or knowledge himself.

According to this newspaper’s investigation, there is no evidence of tension or discord between the two men and Büttner, who are said to have a friendly relationship. They are also said to have met after the arson attack, in Potsdam and Berlin. In early February—just one month after the arson attack—they are said to have attended a performance at the Leipzig Opera together.

Owner of Politico & The Telegraph tells staff to quit if they don’t align with 'corporate values' including supporting Israel's right to exist

The CEO of Axel Springer, which owns Politico and The Telegraph, told staff that anyone who disagrees with the company’s “corporate values,” outlined in its mission statement known as the “Essentials,” including support for Israel’s right to exist, should simply find another job, openly suggesting there is no place for dissent within the organization, according to audio of the call obtained by Jewish Insider.

In a call with journalists, Mathias Döpfner dismissed concerns raised by staff over his political opinions influencing coverage, doubling down instead and saying he would “write more, not less,” while insisting that certain positions, like labeling Iran as aggressors or worse, or the fact that Iran is working on acquiring a nuclear bomb, are so “obvious” they don’t even require evidence.

The remarks came after employees warned that his public commentary risked undermining Politico’s credibility as an independent news outlet, but leadership largely backed him, reinforcing a corporate culture where editorial independence is claimed, yet alignment with top-level ideology appears non-negotiable.

This comes amid recent controversies at Politico, including backlash over a sympathetic profile of UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese and the publication of a political cartoon criticized for invoking antisemitic tropes, which was later removed following public criticism.

Salvador Nasrallah, the liberal who bootlicked the U.S. and Israel because he believed he had won the election by thowing the socialists under the bus, and who, when the U.S. committed election fraud to elect a candidate backed by drug cartels, repeatedly whined and begged Trump and Bukele to take his side and not that of the drug cartels, has only just realized that the U.S. is against him and will not help him.

He is currently posting about the leaked audio recordings between the CIA and the drug cartels in Honduras, in which they discuss how they intended to use the army to rig the elections, and how they wanted to use Honduras and Argentina as testing grounds to see how they would attack Mexico and Colombia.

"Iran using Hormuz as 'economic nuclear weapon' – Marco Rubio" (RT link)

This is worrying to me in that talking of them using it as a nuclear weapon invites the idea that the US can use real nuclear weapons to counter their "economic nuke". It's setting the groundwork for a justification there and/or threatening Iran not so subtlety that the US will use nukes if they don't comply.

Trial of pro-Palestinian activists begins in Germany.

article textYesterday, the trial of the "Ulm Five" began in Stuttgart. They are accused of breaking into the premises of Elbit Systems Deutschland and causing property damage there as part of a protest against the genocide in Gaza last September. Elbit Systems Deutschland is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Elbit Systems Group, one of Israel's three largest defense contractors. Elbit profits directly from the Israeli army's war and the genocide in Gaza. "The act of which the defendants are accused on September 8, 2025, was an expression of deep moral conviction: Civil disobedience directed exclusively against property in order to save human lives," reads a statement by the defendants' attorneys, which was distributed outside the courthouse. The charges include property damage, trespassing, and membership in a criminal organization. For nearly eight months, the five young activists in solidarity with Palestine have been held in pretrial detention, scattered across various prisons throughout Baden-Württemberg.

More than 150 people gathered outside the building and in the courtroom to show solidarity with the defendants. The supporters came from France, England, Ireland, and Germany, making the group just as international as the defendants themselves. Forty activists traveled from Berlin alone. When the defendants were led into the courtroom in handcuffs an hour and a half late, there was applause that lasted several minutes along with chants of solidarity.

There was a heavy police presence in front of and inside the Higher Regional Court in Stuttgart's Stammheim district; the officers' equipment was warlike, and the security checks extremely strict. The checks amounted to petty harassment, far more so than what is customary at other political trials. Nothing was allowed into the courtroom. Watches, belts, jewelry, everything had to be removed and stowed away. Even shoes had to be removed and the soles of the feet shown. A woman with a walking disability had her cane taken away. The statement distributed by the lawyers had to be handed in. Not even the press was allowed to bring their own pens, only pens provided by the court were permitted. Repression and intimidation permeated the entrance as well as the proceedings of the first day of the trial.

The five defendants sat behind bulletproof glass, separated from their lawyers and the interpreters. They were only allowed to communicate with their lawyers via microphones, some of which did not even work. The defense attorneys were not permitted to file motions; they were denied the floor, and their microphones were muted. For half an hour, they tried to make it clear to the judge that their clients had the right to sit next to them. The judge would not listen. She repeated over and over: "I have not given you the floor" and "I have not granted permission to file motions." Motions were only to be allowed after the reading of the charges. The defense attorneys refused to accept this and left the courtroom. The judge then adjourned the hearing for two hours. When proceedings were set to resume at 1:00 p.m., the attorneys were standing behind the bulletproof glass with their clients. The judge gave them five minutes to take their seats. They were not willing to do so. The hearing was then adjourned again.

At the solidarity rally that followed, the lawyers reported that they had tried to speak with the judge during the recess, but she was unwilling to do so. They made it clear how essential it is for them that their clients be able to sit with them while the charges are read. They had never experienced anything like this before, not even in "terrorism"-related trials is there such a separation. They also wanted to discuss with the judge the schedule of the 16 scheduled trial dates: how long each individual session was planned to last, and why they were always set for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday instead of three consecutive days. Four of the attorneys are from Berlin; for them, the fragmented trial schedule is difficult to organize. The judge is blocking everything and giving no answers, making any exchange impossible. This first day of the trial was a lesson in how this state and its courts are becoming increasingly repressive and no longer even adhere to their own regulations.

For a long time afterward, supporters outside the building chanted slogans of solidarity. "Germany finances, Elbit Systems massacres," "Free Palestine - Free Ulm Five," "Freedom for all political prisoners," "Free, free Gaza," "Shut Elbit down," "Germany finances, Israel massacres," "German weapons, German money murder all over the world". These slogans accompanied the defendants as they were driven past the rally, back to their cells.

The Higher Regional Court in Stammheim is where the trial against the RAF took place in the 1970s. Having become somewhat outdated, the original building was decommissioned and replaced ten years ago with a new structure equipped with state-of-the-art security technology, at a cost of 29 million euros. Spectators can watch the proceedings through a two-meter-high pane of bulletproof glass. For safety reasons, the chairs are bolted to the floor. The fact that the trial of the Ulm Five is taking place in Stammheim shows what category the defendants are being placed in.

Brazilian activist allegedly tortured by Israel - Prensa Latina

Article

Brasilia, May 2 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila was subjected to torture after being kidnapped in international waters by Israeli forces while on his way to a humanitarian mission to Gaza, the Sumud Global Flotilla reported today.

In a statement echoed by Brazilian media, the international movement confirmed that both Ávila and the Spanish-Swedish activist of Palestinian origin, Saif Abukeshek, were transferred to Shikma prison in Askalan, north of Gaza, in occupied Palestine, after their illegal abduction in European waters.

The prison is known for holding Palestinian prisoners under harsh conditions and has recently been used to detain civilians kidnapped from Gaza as part of the Israeli campaign against the Palestinian people, the Flotilla noted.

According to the organization, following their forced transfer, new testimonies have emerged through diplomatic channels that raise alarm about the treatment of the detainees.

According to the Brazilian embassy, Thiago Ávila reported being subjected to torture, beatings, and ill-treatment, the statement said.

During a supervised visit, in which he was separated by glass and unable to communicate freely, officials observed visible marks on the activist's face, who also reported significant pain, especially in his shoulder, the text added.

Despite being examined by a doctor, he did not receive adequate medical attention, the statement said, and the embassy is now demanding immediate and appropriate treatment.

The statement also noted that Ávila is on a hunger strike, is only consuming water, has not been informed of any charges against him, and the embassy has not received any clarification on the legal basis for his detention.

Furthermore, the Brazilian stated that he will not end his detention unless Saif Abukeshek, who is also on hunger strike, is released.

In the statement, the movement called on the governments of Spain, Sweden, and Brazil to take immediate diplomatic action to secure the release of their citizens and requested the urgent intervention of international organizations to guarantee the safety and rights of those detained.

The day before, the Brazilian and Spanish governments issued a joint statement strongly condemning the kidnapping of two of their citizens in international waters by Israel.

They recalled that both were aboard vessels of the flotilla boarded by Israeli forces off the coast of Greece, and were not released after the interception of said vessels and the subsequent disembarkation of the passengers and crew on the island of Crete.

The governments of Brazil and Spain demand that Israel immediately return their citizens, with full security guarantees, and that they be provided with immediate consular access for their assistance and protection, the document added.

Mali progress update:

The Malian military has eliminated 2,195 terrorists while rebuffing the April 25 attacks by extremist groups Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin’ (affiliates itself with the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda that is outlawed in Russia) and Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front, the Sawadogo portal reported.

According to the portal, the local population helped eliminate the extremists. It also said, citing witnesses, that Ukrainian and French mercenaries took part in the attacks. They reportedly used Western-made man-portable air defense systems, including Stingers and Mistrals. More than 10,000 Malian troops were deployed to repel the terror attacks.

Hondurasgate: Leaked Audios Reveal Trump-Backed Plot Targeting Petro, Sheinbaum, and Latin American Left - El Ciudadano

A recent leak has brought to light the existence of a political and media cell associated with Trumpism, funded by Honduran government structures, aimed at destabilizing both Gustavo Petro’s administration in Colombia and Claudia Sheinbaum’s in Mexico, as well as the Latin American left.

A collection of audios obtained by Diario Red revealed discussions between former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández—who was convicted of drug trafficking in the United States and later pardoned by the Donald Trump administration—and the current president of the Central American nation, Nasry Asfura, along with his vice president, María Antonieta Mejía.

The recordings detail the formation of a communication team funded with Honduran public resources and contributions from the government of Argentine president Javier Milei, totaling over half a million dollars. The objective is to “strike media blows” against the progressive leaders in the region.

The geopolitical context, characterized by the competition between China and the United States over critical minerals and supply chains, helps explain why Washington resorts to local operators like Hernández to hinder the advance of the Latin American left.

In one of the most revealing audios, dated January 30, 2026, Hernández instructs Asfura from the United States: “I need you to send about 150 thousand dollars to Rosales’ account […] because here we are going to rent an apartment and set up an office for a digital journalism unit. Someone else from here will handle it, from the team of the President of the United States. Well, he is from the Republicans who are helping us. They are going to set up a news site where important information about Manuel Zelaya and Xiomara Castro will be released.”

Asfura responds by offering additional transfers from “a friend’s” account, including resources from the Social Security Institute (INSEP). According to the conversations, the operation included a call between Hernández and Milei, who allegedly committed 350 thousand dollars to execute the destabilizing actions.

The dialogue reveals that Hernández informs Asfura the news site would operate as an informative cell based in the United States to avoid being tracked in Honduras. The aim is not only to attack Xiomara Castro’s government but also to prepare “files” against Mexico (Sheinbaum) and Colombia (Petro).

“Files against Mexico are coming, files against Colombia, and most importantly against Honduras, specifically against the Zelaya family,” states the former Honduran president in the recording.

In another call with Vice President Mejía, Hernández reiterates the need for liquidity to set up an office with support from political actors of the Republican Party in the United States, aiming to “attack and eradicate the cancer of the left” throughout Latin America. Mejía, who requests “details to be omitted” to leave no traces, confirms the management of 300 thousand dollars.

“I will handle all the arrangements, so 300 thousand dollars,” she indicates in the audio.

Beyond the media war, this leak reveals an ambitious plan for territorial reconversion of Honduras into a strategic enclave for the United States. The agreements include the expansion of Employment and Economic Development Zones (ZEDES), the construction of a new military base in Roatan, similar to Soto Cano Air Base (Palmerola)—operated by Southern Command since 1982—and a Center for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT) in Tegucigalpa, emulating the repressive Salvadoran model.

In a voice note from February 10, 2026, Asfura informs Hernández that a group of investors has already greenlit these projects, including a transoceanic train to be awarded to General Electric, deliberately excluding Canada and China. “The Chinese were bidding. But we are not going to give in,” he asserts.

Violence as a tool of control is mentioned unequivocally. In a message directed to Tomás Zambrano, president of the Honduran National Congress, Hernández conveys a directive attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump: “In Honduras, strength is needed, logistics are needed, blood is needed. If you want to keep people controlled, you need to oppress them. Squeeze them. Counter violence by generating violence. It’s what President Trump says.”

Hernández even references the infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar: “Don’t be so soft […] So said Pablo Escobar.”

Meanwhile, Romeo Vásquez Velásquez—who led the 2009 coup against former Honduran president Manuel Zelaya—appears to be coordinating with the Armed Forces “to start the hunt.”

Another pillar of the strategy is the cultural battle waged from evangelical churches. According to the audios revealed by Diario Red, Hernández instructs Zambrano to align all religious congregations so that “people forget the past. And that they think it was the left who did that.”

“In Honduras, evangelicals have already mobilized their parishioners in massive marches against Xiomara Castro’s government, such as the one summoned in August 2025 under the slogan ‘for peace and in defense of democracy’ in coordination with the Honduran Council of Private Enterprise,” the reported source notes.

This web of activities—which combines lawfare, military control of resources, violence, and religious manipulation—confirms that under Nasry Asfura’s government, Honduras has become a pawn on the chessboard for Donald Trump and his interest in regaining the hegemony lost by Washington in the Latin American region due to the defense of sovereignty undertaken by progressive governments.

One lesson to learn for other nations from Iran's "strategic investments" in missiles is the hard trade offs she was willing to make. The Iran Air Force was basically jettisoned as a serious fighting force, for example. So was a 'proper' navy. Many western nations, my own included, get caught up in trying to do everything. Iran thought seriously about how it might win the sort of war it would probably fight, and invested in that at the expense of other lobbying centres. Not an easy playoff, but one that others would do well to make. Otherwise you might end up with one available destroyers, two air craft carriers, a couple of score of highly capable fighter jets, a hundred working tanks, but a tiny army, hardly any missiles, and a practically non-existent air defence.

US Mint gold source tied to criminal networks in Colombia: NYT - Mining dot com

Article

The United States is increasingly being drawn into the opaque supply chains of illicit mining after an investigation by The New York Times tied some of its gold supply to Colombian criminal networks.

Drawing on interviews, trade records and field reporting, the NYT detailed how illegally mined gold in Colombia — often controlled by armed groups and drug cartels — is laundered through intermediaries and exported with seemingly legitimate paperwork before entering global supply chains.

In some cases, that gold made its way into the supply chain of the US Mint, which under federal law must use America-mined gold for its investor-grade coins.

The report highlights a fragmented chain of accountability. When questioned by a Times reporter, the US Mint blamed its suppliers, who then deflected the responsibility to other intermediaries. All parties maintained they had stopped accepting Colombian gold.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, whose department oversees the Mint, said he would investigate the gold procurement practices in light of the Times’ investigative reporting.

The review aims to ensure the US Mint’s gold suppliers follow the law and meet their obligations, while the Mint continues to safeguard national security and market integrity, Bessent told the paper.

The NYT investigators noted that the Mint had long used a loose definition of “US gold,” allowing foreign material to qualify if offset by domestic purchases — a requirement that has not been enforced for more than 20 years, according to a 2024 federal watchdog report.

That year, roughly $1.5 billion of Colombia’s $4.1 billion gold exports ended up in the US, making it the largest single destination, according to trade data compiled by the United Nations.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that illicitly mined gold has been penetrating formal US markets for years.

Previous investigations and enforcement actions have traced gold from Latin America — including Peru and Colombia — into North American refiners and traders, often after being mixed with legitimate supply and exported with falsified documentation.

Those cases have repeatedly exposed how difficult it is for downstream buyers to fully verify origin in a commodity that has such a long history in the global financial system. A World Wide Fund for Nature UK report earlier this year found that over 80% of financial institutions, including those in the US, were at risk of exposure to dealings with illegal gold mining.

The latest findings also further highlight the persistent challenges in achieving full transparency in gold supply chains, as well as the limitations of existing oversight mechanisms.

Following the latest investigation, the Treasury said it is now reviewing the Mint’s procurement practices and has tightened its sourcing standards, the NYT reported.
