Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Weaponization of civilian assets like this should be prohibited. Feels so wrong. It is only the terrorists and terrorist-like regimes who use civilian camouflage for such purpose. What stops someone paranoid with an itchy trigger finger or even just bad intel or grainy surveillance photo to make a mistake and fire on a real civilian ship!

Sometimes I forget that westerners genuinely have lost their capacity for caution. Blowing up what you think is a warship over shoddy intel or grainy footage is onion levels of parady. But that's straight up just how western militaries operate.

" ... Deception is to place a launcher on a garbage truck, a Coca-Cola truck or a farm truck transporting wheat, for example." A number of Israeli companies specialize in camouflage; two are Ametrine Technologies and Fibrotex Technologies

This from a month ago, wherein the genocidaires brag about doing just this sort of thing (but worse).

Also Ukraine used civilian trucks to launch that one successful drone attack in Russia to the thunderous applause of the western media.

Isn't this AI, look at the aircraft on the bottom left that has its wing going through the truck chassis.

A good point highlighted in that post:

The Rich Starry is loaded with 250,000 barrels of methanol that it loaded at the Emirati port of Hamriyah, according to the data. It could be that fact that has ensured the unobstructed passage of the vessel, despite the sanctions. The U.S. Central Command said the blockade would only cover Iranian ports and traffic to and from them.

Trump admin limited the scope of the "blockade" only to ships that dock at Iranian ports.

am I missing something? this is the one lemmy.world thread I've seen that doesn't have any shit takes.

Was referring to pro-nato comments, the comments have definitely improved since I visited last.

The USA's Last Final Warning For Realsies This Time

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Thought so. Would be really silly to attack China after just getting your ass handed to you by Iran.

Iran can block the strait of Hormuz because it has to be able to block the strait of Hormuz.

[–] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Chat is this proof that the USSR shouldn't have chickened out of the Cuban missile crisis?

(Only mostly joking)

Didn't expert the best laugh today to come from actual news ...

[–] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You guys made me look dumb again for not reading the article clearly.

The US blockade only applies to Iranian ports and these ships left or went to the UAE.

Granted the media has been calling it the blockade of the Strait, but don't get too excited since this is still "allowed" by the US.

[–] Transform2942@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, the media is reporting basically what Trump threatened whereas CENTCOM and Lloyd's announced the more specific definition you described
