Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

I know I saw that, cant believe they have people walking around with the last name Magyar lol. Captain John American, are you out there? We need you to lead the American carnation revolution

[–] huf@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago

look at this list: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leggyakoribb_magyar_csal%C3%A1dnevek_list%C3%A1ja

magyar is #35, there are ~20k people with that last name here. also, out of that list, at least the following are ethnicity-based last names: toth, horvath, nemeth, olah, racz, torok, magyar, orosz, lengyel, szekely.

this used to be a pretty multi-ethnic region (multiple kinds of white people) until the 19th/20th century flattened it into nation states.

Huge day for European libs. RIP bozo you will not be missed.

Does anyone else think Orban looks a lot like Bolsonaro

[–] cornishon@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 3 days ago

They replaced an anti-EU rightoid with a pro-EU rightoid.

The EU libs will be extatic

Rest in piss Orban.

(Not an endorsement of magyar, i just reflexively hate orban)

[–] Utter_Karate@hexbear.net 24 points 3 days ago

Without expecting anything at all from Magyar, there has probably made Orban be sad, and that's a nice thought,

I kinda thought Fidsz was doing stuff like ballot stuffing, but I guess being in the EU they do have limits on electoral fuckery even if youre right wing

[–] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 30 points 3 days ago (3 children)

i mean, the new guy is also right-wing, just the pro-eu kind. he literally was in fidesz before 2024.

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They will replace Fidesz with 1990's Fidesz (Orbán started out as a eurolib)

[Fidesz] was formed in 1988 under the name of Alliance of Young Democrats (Fiatal Demokraták Szövetsége, with the acronym FIDESZ) as a centre-left liberal activist movement that opposed the ruling Marxist–Leninist government. It was registered as a political party in 1990, with Orbán as its leader. It entered the National Assembly following the 1990 parliamentary election. Following the 1998 election, it successfully formed a centre-right conservative government.

Ah shit, back to the liberal mask again...

Yeap, and the only reason why he resigned was that his wife had to resign after getting wrapped up in a scandal for helping pardon a massive pedophile.

[–] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Yeah they just hated that hungary wasnt a rapid nafo country.

[–] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There was plenty of electoral fuckery. It just turned out Brussels was much better at doing electoral fuckery than Orban was. I mean the sheer amount of EU funded media weaponized against Orban was crazy. Plus the economic warfare they waged against his government by cutting Hungary's EU funds. Obviously the project of toppling Hungary's government and replacing it with one more submissive to the EU was long ongoing and they invested a lot of resources in it. Not surprising they succeeded.

[–] beanenjoyer@hexbear.net 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Real uneducated hours who up?

The EU finally cut the funds after the government couldn't stop breaking EU law and misapropriating funds. That's not economic warfare. Don't fall for right wing propaganda.

[–] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

There is always some justification offered, but you would have to be naive to believe that it was not motivated by the fact that Orban was a thorn in Brussels' side on the topic of Ukraine. It's not right wing propaganda that the EU has wanted to get rid of him for a long time now. Plenty of EU governments do shady things with EU funds and Brussels doesn't go after them that hard. Let's not pretend like the EU is just some sort of neutral and virtuous policeman here.
