I saw a barn kitten try to take down a cow, it was hilarious!

He was sitting in a barn window, looking down at this cow beneath him, switching his tail, and I was like "Oh, no..."

Suddenly this little black and white kitten LEAPS down on the back of the cow, digging in with claws on all 4 paws, and going to town trying to bite as hard as he could!

ROWR-ROWR-ROWR-ROWR! ROWR!

The cow did not notice.

It was a soul of tiger in a body of a kitten.

A carnivore sees an herbivore, makes the logical conclusion, and enthusiastically implements a plan.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I want to not believe you, but my cat has tried to take me down (we wrassle)

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

I had a cat who would hide under the dining room table, wait for someone to walk by, then dart out and try to hamstring them... so... yeah... Bite size apex predators!

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 weeks ago

You fancy yourself a wrassler, huh?

I bet you couldn't even wrassle a whole cow

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 36 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Pretty sure she's going to have that ego, regardless because she's a cat.

[–] nightofmichelinstars@sopuli.xyz 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Her ancestors brought down bigger and she knows it.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

I have heard that feral house cats will occasionally hunt and kill prey that is much larger than themselves. IIRC, I think they were giving deer as an example. At least it was an animal similar in size to a smaller deer.

Cats stereotypically love tuna.

No cat in the history of cats has ever swam out to sea and caught their own tuna. No member of family felidae, extant or extinct, has ever achieved that.

[–] Asidonhopo@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

...

...Fearsome predator.

[–] lath@piefed.social 6 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Outer sea yes, on shores, debatable. Some felines are known to go for a dip now and again. Are tuna known for coming close to land?

[–] night_petal@piefed.social 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Tuna are deep sea creatures. There is, however, a good chance that at one point many washed ashore dead, allowing the cats to develop a taste for them.

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Did you mean "open ocean creatures"? While tuna can dive 500-1000 meters, and while technically "deep sea" refers to >200 meters, I generally consider "deep sea creatures" to be those that live primarily/exclusively in environments with no light and high pressure, like on the sea floor (~3500m) or in trenches (down to ~11,000m).

But I could be wrong! Maybe a marine biologist or oceanographer can clarify? (Lemmy needs a Unidan, minus the ego and voting fraud.)

Either way, zero overlap with any feline habitats.

[–] dewritoninja@pawb.social 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Have you seen how big is a tuna? I think. A tuna has a better chan6ge of eating a cat if it gets too close

[–] Tetsuo@jlai.lu 1 points 2 weeks ago

But a wild cat wouldn't attack a full grown tuna. As any predator in the wild they would go for the baby tuna.

Tuna are giant fish that live far off shore. Cats are known to fish but they won't land a tuna any more than a dolphin.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

I have 11 cats. Plus three more in my custody. If they worked together they could take down a cow. This is important because cows outnumber people on my block.

But I also want more cat friendly cat food because I too understand what cats want in cat food. I made this 10 years ago:

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago

My brother in Christ, 11 cats is far too much of the right amount of cats to have.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 8 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Vole, rabbit, and shrew for my outdoor babies.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Vole, mole, mouse, cotton rat are the favorites here.

I did find a rabbit skeleton underneath my house. Is the only rabbit I've ever seen of my property. But I don't know if it was there before we moved in or not. And I don't know how my cats would have gotten underneath the house to put it there. So I can't confirm that as a confirmed kill.

[–] Yosmonkol@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

Was the skeleton disarticulated? If not then the rabbit most likely wasn't killed by predetors or scavenged. If it was hunted you'd see bones scattered and quite a few missing. We have foxes, hawks, and coyotes in our area and every now and then we find bits and pieces of their leftovers in the yard and on the porch but never the whole thing.

[–] Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 2 weeks ago

Don't forget all the endangered birds they kill as well. I usually don't like hunters but outdoor cats should be put down, all they do is put a massive strain on the local ecosystem.

[–] zip@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

You may want to look up Mouser brand cat food. If I remember correctly, it was created by someone who had the same thoughts. I don't know how healthy it is or anything, but I think it's a neat idea...even though I feel bad for the poor little critters put into it.

[–] wolfrasin@lemmy.today 6 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

To my knowledge, cats do best with bird & rodent meats. They don't need to be eating anything with hoves or fins... Though they will probably disagree about the fishies

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

They will disagree violently about the fishes! I had a cat that was absolutely crazy about salmon!

[–] ViperActual@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

My cat doesn't care much for salmon. But he absolutely loves canned tuna

[–] wolfrasin@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, no for real. Salmon is the only thing that tempts my girl to do household food crimes

[–] kahjtheundedicated@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I had a cat when I was a kid that would pretty regularly snatch a fish out of the creek behind our house, and she definitely seemed to enjoy the fish. But also squirrels, rabbits, birds, lizards… :(

That was a long time ago. I know now that cats really shouldn’t be let outside because of the (obvious) havoc they wreak on wildlife

[–] wolfrasin@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

Please understand, my furry queen eats canned chicken & liver meals with freeze dried chicken treats for entertainment... but also freeze dried minnow treats. They just make her face so happy & her fur so soft

[–] Arcanoloth@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 weeks ago

I've always enjoyed the thought of a couple cats cooperating to take on a cow lke the raptors in jurassic park, only much closer to the actual size of raptors =^_^=

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Who got that T-Rex in gravy

[–] IAmNorRealTakeYourMeds@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

we humans eat dinosaurs regularly. it's like the most common meat we eat,

like we eat Dino babies for breakfast

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

We even shape them back into dino shapes

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It probably doesn't even taste like beef. Try it yourself.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 weeks ago

At no point could Jessie realistically take down a cow.

[–] felixwhynot@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

My cat can have a hamburger sometimes, as a treat

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

I just help cats whenever

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh! I want to make a thing for my mama

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

"You brought that dog, man?!"

" Yeah I...was afraid he'd kill my parents' cows..."
