Cultural relativism aside, I'm sure we can agree on "terrible" if we talk it out. I'm not asking for a "well X country is worse than Y country, so, Y country isn't THAT bad". I'd say for this discussion we can go as far back as 1800 for "past" as I'm currently convinced there isn't a country with a perfect track record going back even that short a time.

I mean generally some terrible stuff happens when a country comes into existence to begin with.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I agree there probably isn’t one, but so what? If a country did terrible things, but if you were the decider so would you, or if you were a product of that age and so would you, then how judgmental can we be.

For example there are a lot of evils around colonialism and it’s unacceptable today , but it seemed widely accepted a couple hundred years ago. Obviously there are degrees and some things can never be excused, but was basic colonialism really a terrible thing, say to an average Englishman 200 years ago? Terrible but realistic

At the risk of getting blasted here, I’ll do it: consider the us attack on Iran as an example. It’s clearly a terrible action. Maybe there are reasons they think justify it, but not available in public, but even if it were in any way justifiable it’s clearly a terrible action. Yet I can see there being reasons any country might decide it needs to do similar. I can see there being circumstances where the average lemming would make a similar choice. Terrible but realistic

Estonia is pretty decent. They've been on the receiving end of terrible shit and haven't been keen on repeating that in the other direction.

Obviously they have all done something that someone think is terrible. Since evil is within people, not within borders.

Maybe San Marino? And they have been around a long time.

The Nepalese would like to disagree.

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Idk I'm seeing a lot of reports of torture, speech issues and state sanctioned racist action.

Switzerland is far from perfect, but compared to its neighbours France, Italy, Germany, has been "good". No wars, no genocides, no torture, no fascism, no colonies.

[–] Krzd@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, but unlimited capitalism, taking Nazi gold, etc..

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The capitalism part is always funny. Depending on who you talk to, it is either a capitalist paradise or a socialist paradise. Probably because it has a lot of both. Roughly 50% of the economy is in the hands of state or state-owned companies. On the other hand, companies can also fire employees without needing a reason. There are large and powerful unions, but there are no rights to strike. There is mandatory state-regulated health insurance for everyone which covers basically everything, but it's provided through private insurances. Lots capitalism-socialism "contradiction" for those who don't know how the country actually works, and don't want to spend the time to do so.

So people tend to pick what fits their beliefs so that they can criticise the country, usually to make themselves feel better wrt their jealousy if its wealth, stability and beauty.

Yikes. Switzerland is an absolutely capitalist hellhole. Not for their own citizens, yes, but for everyone else. Apart from maybe 1 or 2 island nations, it's the number one spot to store illegal money and "investments".

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Switzerland implements the OECD standards for automatic tax information exchange with other nations, and has done so for a long time

[–] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

So let’s say a Swiss bank has a literal ton of Nazi gold from 1940s. They would automatically inform other nations of that pile?

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

No fascism huh?

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 45 points 1 week ago (4 children)

North Korea hasn't done anything terrible. If you disagree, you just need to spend some time in a re-education camp.
