Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

We’re edging towards French Revolution style turmoil. The billionaires and CEOs should be taking notes - this will keep happening unless something changes.

[–] Carmakazi@piefed.social 83 points 2 months ago (6 children)

They've been taking notes for a while. The change they've decided on is building fortresses for themselves in remote locations, not pursuing social change that would allow even a single coin to slip through their claws.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 45 points 2 months ago (4 children)

And isn't that insane? It boggles my mind that they wish for a dystopian hellscape to be inflicted upon everyone. They cannot escape nor control that situation even though they have the hubris to believe they can. Even if they could survive, what world would they enjoy? Perhaps the mental illness of immoral and unbridled greed also compels them to relish in the endless misery of the human race.

Build a better world and a rising tide lifts all boats. Super simple.

They believe that the individuals constructing their bunkers and serving as their bodyguards will not eventually kill them and take their place.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

lol, that part described so well in World War Z (the book).

[–] RustyShackleford@piefed.social 5 points 2 months ago

Exactly, you’re basically a big slab of veal ringing the chow bell lol.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Any system that rewards people who are this profoundly mentally ill needs to be destroyed

Thank god everything was just peachy after the revolution, and there wasn't any kind of terror, or "reign of" anything bad

[–] cmbabul@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago (7 children)

It was still overall good that the French had a revolution. The status quo at the time was unacceptable, the status quo now is unacceptable, and no one in power is willing to change it. It’s gonna be fucking messy but this system needs to die if the species is to survive

Can we donate to the legal fund of the alleged perp? Does his family need money?

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 41 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not sure why that's necessary. He was at my house at the alleged time of the incident. Couldn't be him.

"ChatGPT told me to do it!"

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 31 points 2 months ago

"You're right. Why shouldn't you take action against Sam Altman and his company? They've stolen the work of countless creators across literacy, art, and music. They've contributed to increase costs of water and power. You've tried other methods to counter them legally. You should firebomb them, as a little treat. You've earned it. "

Step one for people not wanting to harm you Sam, is not doing things that makes people want to harm you.

Being the poster child for costing as many people their jobs as possible was not going to be a popular move, you had to be able to see that coming. If that was not a forecast you could come up with, you probably aren't qualified to be the CEO of a company.

This is only going to increase as jobs are displaced by AI. I don't condone violence against people even shady ones like Altman. But I would kinda grin at the first AI datacenter burnt down by protesters to be honest.

In the longer term I expect those to get prison style security.

[–] LordMayor@piefed.social 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Come on people. Is this what we’ve devolved to? First, you throw a rock to break a window then you throw the Molotov inside the house.

[–] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (3 children)

It was thrown at an exterior gate. I'm sure you can't get anywhere near the house.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 months ago

Not with that sttitude

Not with that attitude you can't.

Judging by the suspect's age and behavior, this sounds a whole bunch like a mental health event rather than something political. Don't be surprised if the motive was something like OpenAI put chips in his blood on behalf of he CIA.

[–] MrSelfDestruct25@fedinsfw.app 11 points 2 months ago

His AI gf dumped him.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Is it really "news" if we don't give a fuck?

[–] MrSelfDestruct25@fedinsfw.app 27 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe I should have posted in Uplifting News.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 9 points 2 months ago
