Step one to fixing printer: shoot printer Step two: take to library, print there.

[–] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I have never met a printer that wants to do its job

My 3d printer loves doing it's job. It's just those damn 2d printers that are garbage

Get yourself a thermal printer for 100$. Suits 95% of my needs. No more, "fuck you I won't print in black, you're low on red".

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 1 points 3 hours ago

I just don't print.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

From what I understand, thermal paper is one of the worst sources of BPA. It isn't regulated because it's not consumed or touching anything you consume usually, but it would be better to consume it than absorb it through the skin because at least the liver processes shit we consume, while shit we absorb can go straight to the bloodstream.

This is on top of being generally the shittiest form of printing by most measures, as the other comments go into. I'd prefer dot matrix or inkjet over thermal paper.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I've had important documents printed on thermal paper and after a few years they turn black. It's fine for short lived stuff but it's terrible for long-term documents.

[–] Stdfr33@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

They mean a toner laser printer. Not a thermal label printer.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Brother laser printers were the thing, but I have heard this has changed in the last two or three years.

[–] BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world 29 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Most thermal paper isn't recyclable though, the chemicals that allow the heat to print onto them can't be easily recycled. A simple Brother laser printer would be a better option for most people if they're just printing black text

[–] Stdfr33@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Yeah but they mean a toner laser printer. Not a thermal receipt printer. I'm assuming they say thermal because it melts the toner to the paper.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 22 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I actually did not know that. Apparently there's some eco-friendly thermal paper, I'm gonna look into this. Thanks for pointing it out.

[–] BigDaddySlim@lemmy.world 6 points 22 hours ago

Glad I could help 🤝

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Doesn't thermal ink basically fall off the paper in a few weeks? At least receipts and such fade pretty quickly.

[–] Test_Tickles@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

It doesn't fall off, but it does start to break down pretty quickly. And ambient UV light makes it fade even faster. But if the print is dark and bold, and you store it someplace cool and dark, it should last a year or 2. Having said that, I have noticed that somehow, for some unknown reason, the registers in departments where you make big purchases, like say the electronics department, always seem to print much much lighter than the rest of the registers. It's some kind of unsolvable mystery that can never be understood.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Can you please explain this to my frugal Asian parents who only care about the price of the printer?

Nah nvm, your words are just gonna come out the other side of the ears lmfao

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 4 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Would they be down with a second hand printer? I found a $650 Brother multifunction at Goodwill for $10 that looked brand new, just needed a new toner cartridge.

It was to replace a nearly 20 year old Brother that still works via USB, but the NIC died.

If you know what to look for, it's not hard to find good ones.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

A lot of goodwills wont take printers, because the local salvage/dump reasonably charges disposal fees that make them uneconomical if they dont sell.

Same thing happens with compressors. Its why you dont see as many ACs/dehumidifers/fridges anymore. Costs too much to dispose of them when they dont sell.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

They'll take them if you don't trip the bell and leave before they notice you. With that trick they'll even take your old CRTs. (way safer than throwing them down an embankment into the woods)

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Do they actually make these for full 8.5 x 11 pages?

I've only seen them for receipts and labels

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 3 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

What's the use case of such tiny papers?

Edit: i searched online and apparently they are talking of the "letter size" just another USA standard, the size is in inches; Please, write the unit next time

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 3 points 23 hours ago

Oh yeah it does. Rolls a really cheap, I use that most of the time. Regular flat paper is a bit more expensive, I use it only for important stuff. The printer is really small too, easy to put in your bag. I'm sure there's a lot of brands but the one I got is Phonemo M32 I think.

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

Thermal? You mean laser? With a fuser?

[–] thenextguy@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Ha! I am a programmer that wrote printer software for 20 years. I get to live.

[–] harambe69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Did you also write the software that checks if the ink is counterfeit and bricks the entire printer? If so, I'm a big fan of yours and would like to meet you in person. Please DM me your name and address.

[–] thenextguy@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington DC

It’s the big white house with the fence. Name’s Don. Looking forward to meeting you.

Oh, and my little buddy J.D. came up with the bit that prevents you from printing in B&W if one of the other colors is empty. He’s usually hanging around here too.

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You also get to refill ink and remove crumpled paper with staples from the printer. Since, you know, you're the printer person.

What does paper jam taste like?

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 9 points 1 day ago

Slightly better than traffic jam

[–] thenextguy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

This was the first one I worked on.

The paper jams could be scary.

Incredible movie everyone should see. Heavily based on stories from the real Szpilman, who died just before the movie released I think, but helped them with it I'm pretty sure. Shows the true realities that Jews went through in Poland.

A damn shame the movie was made by a giant piece of shit.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

They played this movie in my middle school classroom... I was kinda half distracted

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 hours ago

It's very long and pretty depressing. Not exactly a good way to keep middle schoolers awake

This is me every single time I go to my Mother-in-law's house

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I actually gifted my parents a 15 year old brother laser and told them to just plug in your laptop.

But technically I can repair the printer...

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 4 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Yeah, the joke doesn't really work, does it? Any decent programmer will have a better shot at fixing a printer, because any decent programmer is good at finding information on the internet and then following the instructions.

Programmers complain about this situation because once people know that we use the computers, they expect us to fix everything for them for free. So, it's just annoying. But I wouldn't sacrifice my life to avoid a minor annoyance, so the joke doesn't really work.

If you're a programmer that doesn't generally know how to find instructions to fix things like printers on the internet and then follow them, then I'm on the side of the guy who wants to shoot them.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

I can find the instructions and am still on team shoot the printer. I have one working printer in the house (it connects to the switch) and if you can't print to it you can't print. We have three PCs that can do it so figure it out yourself, as resident IT I'm not figuring out any more printing.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

I organized our network's printers into a print server, then wrote scripts to deploy them using a simple CLI tool. When printers break, I google it and order the part. Beyond that there is no more chaos, no more walking to workstations to troubleshoot. I am not a programmer, just an automation-focused sysadmin. Who ALWAYS gets assigned the bloody printers, because I'm too nice.

it aint easy but somebody gotta do it
